I believe, gentle folk, there's an old Godivanian saying that translates roughly as follows: "When the going gets tough, the tough eat cookies" And though I am unable at the moment to engage in the all-important Baking of the Cookies, I thought some of my partners in rhyme might like to sink their teeth into some moist and succulent Mrs. Field's cookies (I wonder if that will be bleeped ? )..... I know, some of you are partial to varmints of all sorts in your cookie dough, but if you're running a little low on the likely-needed dental floss, maybe you could try these for a change. Special thanks to Herbie G. for reminding me to dig up the recipe....(and as noted, I did need the shovel for other duties, so it was already out :o )!! So here we go: Mrs. Fields Cookies (chocolate chip):1) Cream Together:4 sticks butter 2 cups brown sugar 2 cups granulated sugar 4 tsp. vanilla 4 eggs 2) Mix separately:4 cups flour 5 cups pulverized oatmeal 2 tsp. baking soda 1 tsp. baking powder 3) Put aside:24 oz. of chocolate chips 8 oz. grated milk chocolate 4) Mix two bowls together5) Blend in chocolate chips and grated chocolate6) Drop 1 to 2” balls on ungreased cookie sheets, and bake at 375° for 6-8 minutes. If using bigger balls , half-way thru cooking time pat down the center of the cookies so they don't burn. DO NOT OVERCOOK -- PERHAPS EVEN UNDERCOOK IF YOU LIKE THEM GOOOOOOEEEY! BON APPETIT! The Unbakeable Bethy Boo

Oh yes, Herbie...you must beat it to a pulp! But whatever you do, DON'T TURN YOUR BACK ON IT. In truth, you just need to grind it up some... Hope you get a chance to make and/or sample some! CHOW for now, Beth

That recipe has to make a lot of cookies. I usually make enough for myself, but that recipe is for a tribe. Ben

Well, as far as I'm concerned, you can never have too many chocolate chip cookies!! Thanks for sharing Beth, but really now, I want to know one person who has: "half-way thru cooking time pat down the center of the cookies so they don't burn." You're telling me you've done this? In addition to pulverizing the oatmeal? You're a better woman than me...

Maybe we'll make a big batch for PineyFest next year! We could even have a cookie baking/tasting CHALLENGE....and the winning cookie would get a song written about it by the, er...runners up! And Kristi, are you serious about NOT doing the Cookie Pat? OHHHH, it's a long tradition...course the initiators of the practice lost more than a handful of fingers ( ), but live and learn, right? Finally, the key for ANY cookie OR brownie is the Undercookage Allowance.... There. My work here is done. Baked Beth

Oh good, I'm glad. We do a big neighborhood holiday cookie swap too.... Anyway, here's a quick link on Mrs. Fields. As you'll undoubtedly note, as of four days ago, the cookie empire that was Mrs. Fields filed for bankruptcy. :o Betcha they could do a lot of bartering to help pay off some of their debt! Kidding aside, it's quite a shame.... Take it easy, Beth http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mrs._Fields

Hey Beth,
This sounds way too complicated. Creaming, mixing, pulverizing, then you have to mix, blend and bake? I'm much more suited for tearing open plastic, then devouring. I don't bake, nor do I cook. That's why I got married.

Oh Brazen Hussy Lime-Smiling Ricki.... Now there's where we differ...while I'm all for the occasional "quickie" cookie ...the necessary labor of love mixed in with the other ingredients is what make these cookies so special . (Of course, as you might have noticed in a previous post, the company tanked, so maybe those little oompah-loompahs got tired of all that work too!! ) Still hatin' ya! Beth P.S. Come ON, I want to hear another song so I can really loathe you!! I bet you could cover some Carly Simon really well...

I'm with Kristi. Fie on Ben. How can you have too many cookies? Freeze half of them. Then nuke one for the required number of seconds after they thaw. Pert near like hot outa the oven (But not quite) Wy--Mud Yeah that sounds like a hefty batch, but that's ok.

Hmph. Doesn't make *that* many cookies. Mrs. F. must be catering to a gourmet or otherwise quantity-limited market. ('Sides, mine got better ingredients.)

Hey Beth, Thanks for this recipe.
As I read this I was reminded of a friend who passed away a few years ago. He was a Master Potter, and in his last years had gotten the contract to make the stoneware cookie jars for Mrs. Fields. His name was Raymond Harris, he was a sweet man, one day, while visiting him to see what he had new, he gave me a jar he had, he'd always made a few extra in-case there would be a crack in one after firing.
Anyway, your post reminded me of him, and I think I'll make some cookies tomorrow and use my Mrs. Fields cookie jar and think of those friends who aren't here, but still make me smile. Thanks Beth.

Hey Caroline,
Wow, I was wondering where you were going with that story! What a coincidence. I'm sorry about your friend, but I'm glad this recipe can remind you of him in a "sweet" and special way...
You'll likely enjoy the cookies more than most...
Take care, Beth

Hi Beth I absolutely love cooking, there is one thing about your recipe, that this Aussie girl doesn't understand, 4 Sticks of butter, hmmm, we have grams here in Australia, so could you give me a little bit more information please. Also I have a great recipe for cookies, that you would all love, I will post it over the weekend, as I am off to singing lessons tomorrow, to practice my next song, and then off to work for a ten hour shift. So thanks, I will have a go at baking them. Also, as soon as I have got a chance I will post up my lamington recipe, and my cookies, if you don't mind hah. Yummy. Michele Aussie friend

Hey Michele,
Hm....I'm not sure about the conversion to grams, but it's basically all four sticks you get in one box of butter. Here, that is a pound of butter all together (so for anyone wondering why they're so good.....). Hope this helps.
And believe it or not, I've HAD lamingtons before. A dear Aussie friend made them for me -- alas, she's moved back to your neck of the woods. And they were delicious. I look forward to seeing the recipe....
Hope you enjoy these. They are indeed labor-intensive, but SO WORTH IT!
Take care, Beth

Chocolate chips AND shaved chocolate? Ohhhhhhhhh, divine. I'll have to print that off, Beth. Thanks.

Herbie, the oatmeal doesn't feel a thing after the first beating. It's goes numb instantly.

Thanks for that clarification Tricia!
I also didn't want anyone to confuse that particular step in the directions with "SOWING YOUR WILD OATS". That's a totally different kind of cookie....
Later, Beth

Anytime, Beth. Gee, I can't remember the last time I sowed wild oats. That's a shame.
