I was having a discussion today with a friend about why all his guitars are either Shell Pink or Surf Green. It led into a lengthy discussion about Fender's color chart over the years.

So...I was wondering if you gravitate toward one color or another. It's OK if you don't have an actual Fender (I don't), but it seems any discussion about guitar colors always references the Fender color chart. I'm partial to Fiesta Red. What do you like?

There are tons of color charts online, but here's a link I just pulled up for reference purposes.

I'm particularly partial to Sea Foam Green myself. Shell Pink and Daphne Blue too...to me, those colors mean 'surf guitar,' my first musical love.

Though I've always kind of wanted a paisley model.

I'm fond of the more natural finishes;
20 Amber
50 Butterscotch
I also like that 30 aged Cherry burst too.

Todd, my son has that seafoam green 72 thin line, monster sound too.

No smartass came in and said 'chrome'???

I once saw a reverse charcoal sunburst Strat that I'll always regret not buying. It was very unusual looking. Never saw that paint scheme again. Maybe it was a custom job.

I've got a pewter Strat myself. But color is kind of secondary for me.

I am more of a plain color guy such as black or olympic white.

I did like the blue paisley flames and would consider buying something like that.

Take Care:

For strats, tobacco sunburt no question (I have two). As for tele's, I'm really not all that picky. Teles just always look good. =) Mine is plain, natural wood (the black finish was stripped), but I do really like bound Teles when I see them. Maybe black w/ cream binding.

Fender did make a chrome custom model. It was partnered with Harley Davidson and quite pricey.

Three Color Sunburst, hands down for me...I also dig the aged Whites, and Black never fails.

Our ex guitarist recently brought back a Strat from a US trip. It is a natural wood finish, not painted, just polished and varnished. It is a kind of light ash/beechwood colour. The fretboard is exactly the same colour. Beautiful. Seemingly it is not a special but straight of the shelf. None of us have seen anything that looks or sounds as good as it. If he were to order a special custom that would be the very guitar. Now he does not need to. The guy in the shop said it was the best standard strat he had ever come across and thought it might have been a custom that escaped. Our guitarist has declined a lot of offers way in excess of it's retail price.
Once in every blue moon a perfect guitar comes of the production line and he reckons he has found it.

Well, I have an awesome "Aged Cherry Burst" American Deluxe Strat, and a basic Black American Standard Strat. I also have a basic Black Jazz Bass.

I also am partial to those "surfer" colors, but they are hard to come by on lefty models...

I have an imitation of a Fender Strat.
It is a Harmony woodgrain, made back in the sixties and still axe grinds to this day.
I have tried Fenders (and also Squires) being fortunate enough to have friends in bands that played guitar.

I don't know if it's the sound or just psychological, but there is something about a woodgrain to where the feel and sound always connected in my body more as I was playing.

Wow, I'm surprised so many people are chiming in with seafoam green. I can't stand that color.

(Ugh, NOW I'll be totally unpopular for saying that!!)

PopTodd, that pink one IS pretty, if a little on the feminine side. wink

I know what you mean by that.
Some of my favorite bands play green and also red guitars.
For some reason, I hav'nt seen blue guitars too much.
And usually the bass player has a woodgrain.

But seeing a guitar with a green color depends on the green.
I recall beautiful looking Trans Ams with a pea green color.
And I look at the body of a guitar like that car.
I don't want to be revolted by a guitars color when I play it.
Next to woodgrain, candy apple is my favorite shade, of any color.
I would probably really hack and put a lot of piss and vinegar in the pea green colered guitar though.
The guitar is beautiful of any color anyway.

The color to fit the mood....

It's all in how you bludgeon, erm... play it!
But yeah, if I ever cheat on Susan (my main axe for 20 years now), it'll be with something like that.

For me its a combination of things, not just the color. I like ebony or rosewood fretboards and gold hardware then, tobacco sunburst body. Being of Celtic heritage and a pale blue complexion, I show up better against the instrument. Its a contrast thing...

My Strat is black with a white pickguard. I didn't buy it because of how it looked. I bought it because of how it *played* and how it *sounded*. It probably would have played and sounded the same in any color.
