Hi Folks,
I write these things and sometimes forget to actually post them. So here is Friday's:
If anyone is into watching TV reality shows, we have some JPF members to watch for. In America's Got Talent, you can watch for Corina Brouder. She's the girl who sang and played the Harp. She's been a JPF member since nearly day 1 when she was a much younger girl and we first met her in 1999 when she and her siblings played a JPF show at the Baggot Inn in NYC. They reminded me of a cross between the Sound of Music cast and the Partridge Family. Corina always seemed to be the focus on the shows.
She's been performing mostly solo of late and she's in round 2 of America's got talent. She'll have to go head to head with the young 11 year old phenom, so that's no small challenge, but she's a beautiful and talented young woman and I am sure she's having a blast on the show.
The other show to watch for is Rockstar Supernova. We have 2 JPF members in the finals there. The one who is entered into the 2006 Awards is Storm Large. (Yes, that's her real name). She did Pinball Wizard during the first weeks show and was a judge favorite. (I actually missed her performance unfortunately as she went first). She made it past the first week and so we should see her next week as well and beyond. The other JPF member I am still verifying. I suspect it might be a case of 2 artists with the same name, so I am going to verify first.
If anyone DID watch Rockstar in week 1, I have a question. Are the judges tone deaf? The guys in the bottom 3 performed on Wednesday. 2 of the 3 were among the worst singers I have EVER heard on a Nationally televised TV show. They were both flat their entire performances on Tuesday and Wednesday and were excruciatingly bad on Tuesday and only slightly less horrible on Wednesday. There was third guy who could actually sing very well in the bottom with them. So guess who the geniuses eliminate? The guy who could actually sing of course. It was one of the most unfair and unbelievable misjudgments I've ever seen. I mean I am not kidding when I say the 2 guys they kept were embarrassingly bad. I would have put either of them in the Bad American Idol audition out takes. The only thing I can imagine is that there's more going on behind the scenes with those guys than we know about. They can't sing. Maybe they're related to someone on the show or it's an inside deal. Because I can't imagine what else would explain their decision.
We were asked to send people to them for auditions this year. They told us they wanted mainstream and diverse rock artists. I sent them about a dozen diverse singer songwriters with a rock edge and asked if that was okay and they said that was exactly what they wanted. (I even sent bios and sound clips and video clips when available to be sure.. they told me all my selections were great). But then, after most had already auditioned, they decided instead of mainstream, they wanted hard edged rock/metal type singers instead, meaning we wasted our time and our members time and their time for that matter. I am glad Storm still made it on the show, but it was frustrating to spend the time trying to help and sending them all the wrong people. We had plenty of hard rocker/metal types we could have sent, but they didn't want that initially.
Ah well... Any thoughts?

It just shows, reality shows really ARE just like real life. Mike ------------------ You have to practice improvisation. -Art Tatum Mike Dunbar Music
You've got to know your limitations. I don't know what your limitations are. I found out what mine were when I was twelve. I found out that there weren't too many limitations, if I did it my way. -Johnny Cash It's only music. -niteshift Mike Dunbar Music

They don't always pick talent. I know one person that was submitted a few times and never even got an audition. And another person I know who was waaaaaaaaaay over qualified, who did get a private audition and still didn't get on the show. Hey Jody, didn't you tell me some guy had indicated he was going to be on the show before the auditions were even partially done? It seems like you indicated it was a guy that might be one of the 2 bad singers that should have been nuked. If it really is the same guy, then we know it was an inside job. If not, then I wonder if that guy actually made the show as he insisted? Do you remember his name? This guy was from Atlanta originally.
