Hi Folks,

The boards had a major crash. Not sure what happened, but Ryan from Hostbaby saved the day. We may have lost SOME stuff and we're still trying to figure out the exact cause. He feels most likely it was simply a weird glitch of timing where the board was updating 1 thing and part of it's config files were also being updating and the conflict cause it to reset to zero and then once someone else posted something the board didn't know what to do and started to erase stuff. Even I was locked out of the board for the night. Once again the Hostbaby folks have gone above and beyond to help save our board, but it's clear we MUST update the board or we face this happening again and Ryan may not always be there to save the day. I have contacted the manufacturer to see how much it will cost. If you remember, they stopped supporting this board 2 weeks ago, so we really have no other option. The cost is going to be OVER 1000 dollars. In the past, users have offered to financially support the upgrade, but the last time we did an upgrade 122 people agreed to help and only 2 people actually followed through and made any donations at all. Hopefully this time around, those who use the boards the most will chip in a bit. I may simply post the list of all who chip in to acknowledge the folks who helped keep the boards going and a running dollar total of donations until we hit the break even point.

This is a reminder to everyone using computers to BACK UP your music, lyrics and other important files right now. People always get lazy (myself included) then we a glitch happens, you may forever lose stuff you can't replace. That happened to me on an entire collection of songs back in 1991 when my Mac SE hard drive crashed and I lost 40 songs that had been sequenced with no back ups. I was only able to recreate a single song. Don't let that happen to you. Fortunately Hostbaby does regular back ups so most of our posts should still exist.

Thanks for the update...what a stressful event! I am relieved that the boards are up and running, and am grateful to Ryan for fixing it. Thanks to you, too, for hanging in there and helping as well...

If 100 people each sent $10.00, or 200 people each sent $5.00....we could easily cover this cost.

Please let me know where I can send my donation.... I will put it in the mail tomorrow

We have a pay pal donation button already set up. Just click the red button to your immediately top right of this page. You can buy stuff but you can also make a donation anytime. Or you can send a donation by check if you'd like as well and save the transaction fee that Pay Pal charges us for donations.

When I hear back from the manufacturer about the upgrade and final cost of installing it etc.. I will post that total here and we'll have an official fund drive to do the upgrade. If we can't get enough money pledged, we may have to ride it out until after the music awards, where we'll either lose a bunch more money, break even, or actually make a little money which could be used to upgrade the entire website.

Our friends at Virgin (i.e. the guys running it) are starting a new company which will continue to run Virgin Digital but also is working on new projects as well. They've been big supporters of us in the past and their head guy is personally working on a brand new website for us. He's not a graphics guy, but he's a programmer, so it will be cool, but we'll still need some money to finish the job. If we happen to get more money than the upgrade costs, we'd use the extra towards the new website which will allow for audio files, personal web profiles, tons more photos and video files of showcases and even the awards show and so on. But our first priority is to save and secure our message board.

Thanks to both of you for stepping up. Now we just need another 198 peers to do the same.

All of those posts weren't *completely* lost, they're just almost impossible to mass-restore (because this board software isn't very nice).. if any of you posted something that you have no way of recreating, just shoot an email to ryan(at)hostbaby(dotcom) with the subject or perhaps a phrase i can search for and i can (hopefully) email you back the contents of your post.

Speak of the devil! Everyone should thank Ryano aka Ryan of Hostbaby! He's saved us at least two other times in the past and is also the guy who created our last member survey for a fraction of what other companies wanted! Ryan rocks!

Hey Brian, have you considered switching to Drupal? It's opensource and it ROCKS. I've set up like 15 sites on it and would gladly pitch in to help you convert.

It has tremendous momentum right now in higher ed and over 6000 sites are running on it worldwide including some pretty giant ones like theonion.com I believe. It's the real deal.
