I'd buy one of the MXL LD condenser mics. I use the MXL1006 LD mic and the MXL1000 MD mics & love them. I think the 1000s are no longer produced. For a dynamic mic I'd go with the Carvin CM68, CM67 or the Shure SM58 or SM57. You should be able to find the Shure mics for just under a hundred. If you can throw in another 60 bucks Musicians Friend and Sam Ash have a great deal on a MXL combo package. ------------------ DakLander

Samson has an under-$100 condenser mic made with the same Chinese capsule as most of the other "under-$200" condenser mics out there; Samson's is Model C01. I heard it at the Samson booth at January's NAMM show and was pretty surprised at how good it sounded for the price. They had a singer wailing into a whole lineup of the new Samson mics and they all sounded decent. I think the C01 is only about $70. http://www.samsontech.com/ Also, as Dak mentioned, MXL makes several mics in the under-$100 price range. Some of them even include shockmounts for that price. My only experience with MXL mics was that when I tried yelling loudly into one at the NAMM show with headphones on, it distorted tremendously - maybe it was a defective unit, but I wasn't impressed - and I don't remember which model it was. Not all the MXL mics did that, just one or two models, so just be sure to try the mic before you buy it if at all possible. I should warn you that you will NOT find a true "do-all" mic for that price. However, since you specifically asked about recording with such a mic (vs live performance), I think these are some of the best deals going right now. Otherwise, it's still pretty hard to beat the ol' Shure SM57/58 line for under $100 - but they are better suited to live use vs recording vocals and/or acoustic guitar. Hope that helps! ------------------ Larry www.audibleresponse.com
