Thanks for the spark of an idea Marty... What guitars or guitar gear do you feel falls in this category? My first thought is Joe's Guitars out of Salt Lake City, UT. http://www.joesguitars.net He makes great custom guitars for a non-custom price. I already have 3 and I'm about to get my 4th! Solid, well-built and of course comes with the parts you want on it. I'm sure I'll add more, but anyone else care to add to the list and the reason? Jody www.jodywhitesides.com

I'm a big Breedlove fan. I played a $6500 Breedlove at their NAMM exhibit, and although I love both Martin and Taylor, it was definitely a cut above even their top-of-the-line stuff. I think their low-end guitars are around $2500 or so. http://www.breedloveguitars.com ------------------ Larry www.audibleresponse.com

I spent a few minutes playing a Collings once, and I'll never forget it. Amazing work.
Their mandolins are first rate, too. I wonder if they make ale...

I tinkered with the pickups on cheap electrics for years and decided to try building a guitar to my specs about 6 years ago. I ordered all the parts from www.warmoth.com and put together a thinline Tele style with a whammy and a nice quilt top that I finished myself. It wasn't hard, I don't have any woodworking skills- you can order any particular routing you might need, now, finished bodies and necks are available- you could put something unique together in a day or two.. I was visiting a friend near Woodstock, NY, and he pulled out one of his prized posessions - an electric 12-string that plays in pitch. Not only was this beauty tuned from E to E, but it was a breeze to play. If money was no object, I would've bought it from him right there and then. I found out that this guitar was made buy a local friend/aquaintance of his, and can be found at: www.veilletteguitars.com

Ok so let me admit it right off the bat, I have the sickness known as GAS.
I have a Breedlove SC20 Koa back and sides. These guys don't get the recognition they deserve.
I also have a 1981 Fylde Orsino. Definitely under recognized, even though they got an award from acoustic guitar magazine.
And in the Rodney Dangerfield category, Tacoma makes some nice high end guitars, I have the PKK40 and the solid Brazilian Rosewood models they are making sound great.

Morgan Monroe, yes they are available if your local dealer deals with SHS.

Shoot, everyone knows Breedlove, Tacoma, and Collings. How about something REALLY acrcane and wonderful (and which I can't afford): Grammer and Petros. My dear friend Ed (RIP) bought a Grammer Johnny Cash in a Nashville pawnshop in the mid-70s--what a sweet guitar! Dreadnought, Englemann spruce top, Brazilian Rosewood back & sides (all solid, of course), low-profile unbound mahogany neck. No pearl or gold--but lots of gorgeous wood parquetry. Full round tone--only complaint is light bracing for less-than earsplitting volume. Billy Grammer, a Country Music Hall of Fame member, founded the factory as a joint venture with Cash in the mid-60s to build the perfect country dreadnought. Petros is achingly perfect (and agonizingly expensive). couple of my buddies have them--wood bindings, unusual tonewoods, shaped and braced for exquisite note isolation of inside chords all the way up the neck--quintessential fingerpickers. One buddy had to surrender $2000 PLUS a Martin HD-28 for one! ------------------ Sandy Andina www.sandyandina.comwww.cdbaby.com/sandina www.mp3.com/SandyAndinawww.waterdogmusic.com
