Maybe it's just me....

Little Richard & Chuck Berry aside, there was a whole group of kids in the late 50' & early 60's who were raised singing in their Gospel Choirs.....And at that time, Gospel Music & Secular Music were not compatible...

Sam Cooke was the 'first' well known Gospel singer to branch out into Secular...And he took a lot of criticism for it....But all the Gospel Choir kids of that time...ie: Arteha, Marvin, Smokie...have all paid homage to Mr. Cooke for paving the way,,,,,Many different 'ways', actually.......

Beautiful voice, and one heck of a writer!!!!

So, here's my very brief homage:

1. You Send Me
2. Chain Gang
3. Wonderful World (First line: Don't know much about history)

Midnite

P.S....His murder was never solved, but that's a whole different thread for another time...This Thread is a simple 'Thank You'...

P.P.S.

I'm editting to add acouple more that you might have heard of:

4...Another Saturday night (& I ain't got nobody)

5...'Cupid' (draw back your bow)

6. 'Bring it on home' (to me, yeah, yeah,,,yeah,,ba da daa)

7. 'We're having a party' (everybody's dancing, swaying to the music, on the radio)

Amazing singer, super smooth voice.

Influence many singers, most notably Steve Perry of Journey. If you ever put up a song by him next Sam Cooke you'll notice how much Steve loved him. It's scary how much he stole from that source.

Eugene "Hideaway" Bridges is a great listen for any Sam Cooke Fans.
Sometimes he gets too close to sounding like his mentor maybe.
I guess you could say he really does Cooke.
Can't remember where he is fromr.
Either Houston or Dallas from memory.
One of them little Texas towns anyway.
Real good live act.
Plays great guitar, real riveting vox and nice to talk to too.

Much neglected and forgotten, and surely un-appreciated for the most part.
Absolutely the ONE guy that got me listening to rhythm and blues when I was a shave tail.

I used to do a God Awful cover of "Bring It On Home To Me". I probably should add more of his tunes to my set list.

Don't forget his classic, 'A Change is Gonna Come'.

Still haunting and poignant after all these years.

Every current r&B singer that over uses melisma should be taken to the woodshed and beaten to death with that record.

Yo Coz...

I didn't mention 'A change is gonna come' 'cause I thought that it was too long forgotten...

Glad that I was wrong....& I'm also glad/surprised, that 'Bring it on home' seems to be at the top of the JPF Performers 'song sets'...Especially considering how well known his other songs are....

Here's a little trivia for you. JPF member Mandi Martin (and world record pinball player) had dinner with Sam Cooke the night he was murdered. (She doesn't believe it was an accident at all). Here's a unique photo that was taken of Sam, Mandi and Rick Nelson in the studio where they were all recording the same day.

Cool eh?

Brian,

The photo & your knowledge is WAY KEWL!!!

But you also bring up THE question that,
perhaps, belongs in a whole other Post...

Looking at the photo...And keeping in mind that it was in L.A. in 1964....

If it had been Ricky Nelson who had been murdered, and not,,,

(& I'm quoting from one of the original Investigators)

"Another dead Negroe in a motel room"...

Do ya think that, perhaps, a little more energy would have gone into solving the crime?

And yes, it's a rhetorical question...And I don't wanna go down that road here...

All I wanna do,,,is,,,never forget those who've paved the way...

RIP Mr. Cooke,,,And again, Brian, thanks for the photo...(where'd you dig that up from?)

I'm not that big a fan of Journey, but I'm aware of the cover song. An long time friend of mine was the one who pointed it out to me that Steve Perry wished he was Sam Cooke. Then when I did listen to Journey songs it became so obvious to me.

As far as stealing from the best. Yes, it's true it's a good idea to steal from the best. HOWEVER - I recommend not stealing everything from the same source. Steal from a bunch of different great places. Or rather a better term would be borrow. That's how you become original.

The Man and His Music should be a cornerstone of ANYBODY's collection. Helluva singer and a helluva songwriter, as well. Glad somebody mentioned it, because that aspect of his talent tends to get overlooked a lot.

Sam Cooke was also a "transitional" artist in the sense that he was one of the first to demand and receive a really high level of involvement in his own career.

Sam wrote or cowrote and produced or co produced almost all of his recordings.

Sam was good friend with Cassisus Clay and while he rejecterd the Muslims , remained friends with Muhammad til his death.

Conspiracy theories abound about Sams death..but..in the cool light of reason, it does appear that he just got out of control in that motel parking lot and got shot.
He was buck ass nakeed at the time and did have a young lady in his room.
It was the motel manger (a woman) that shot him...

Sam Cooke was a wonderful singer and a great songwriter as well.

Old farts like me can attest to the influence he had over so many singers..

Sam was a big fan of Nat King Cole and you can hear alot of Nat in Sam's commercial releases.

His Gospel work with the Soul Stirrers was absolutely breathtaking..

An amazing talent and one of my heroes.

Thanks for remembering Sam Cooke.

Bob Young

Someone mentioned "A Change is Gonna Come"
Sam stayed away from politics, especially in his art and music..but this song is Sam's response to the Civil Rights issues of the 60's.
If you're not familiar with Sam as a singer, this is a great place to start.
Also..we just lost Lou Rawls who was Sams protege and is the voice you hear answering Sam on Bring it On Home to Me

By the way, the Soul Stirrers are still out there and are JPF members as well... (and received a nominations for a Gospel song in 2001).

Was it Dr. Seuss or Shel Silverstein, or Somebody else who wrote:

"Oh, the things you'll see on Mulberry Street?"

'Cause I would like to paraphrase...

"Oh, the things you'll learn on JPFolks"

Jody,

Thanks for elaborating on my 'stealing' line:-)

Someone once asked Woody Guthrie how he felt about 'someone' (not Dylan) who was singing & stealing his songs & melodies...And Woody said: "Hell, he just steals from me. I steal from everybody."

And Pete Seeger, Woody's Pal, 'borrowed' from the book of Ecclesiasticus to write a song we know as 'Turn turn turn'.......

'There is nothing new under the sun',,,,But as Artists, the trick, I think, is to put our own 'spin' on ageless themes & stories.

Me.
I'm just your average plagerist.
I don't borrow.
I don't steal.
I just take.
Only way to go.
There is a river of words out there, and I figure to rein them all in no matter what folks call me.

I'd forgotten 'bout that one Susan...And while looking at the link I'm posting, I was reminded that he'd also written "She Was Only Sixteen."...Which I remember Dr. Hook doing a cover of...

I believe Mandi was "only Sixteen" in that photo. Perhaps the song was about her? = )

Sam was producing her in the studio I think at the time and she and a few others were having dinner with him the night he died. It was very controversial in part because Bobby Womack was seeing Sam's wife openly shortly after he died. Bobby is still a current friend of JPF Mentor Harold Payne (who is also a friend of Mandi's still today as well...). Both have had interesting stories to share about all this.

I knew Mandi was cool; she just keeps getting cooler and cooler.

Actually another little known factoid about Mandi Martin is that she sang back ups on the classic bear drinking bar song "Why Don't We Get Drunk And Screw!" How's that for a claim to fame? = )
