Hi Folks,

Since so many features are broke, I am considering doing a full board upgrade to 8.0. If anyone is considering a donation this year, this would be a good time for it as it is going to cost some money. Also, if the board is down, it may be the updating is happening. likely this coming week sometime. It is cheaper to just update it all than to fix stuff.

I'm not sure why you have no clientele to speak of and never regulate haters and arguments , You lost 99% of people and has giving in to AI like its God. This site is more dictated to senseless politics then music

If it is so horrible, why are you here? By the way, our membership is still quite active, we just had an event in Los Angeles and another in Nashville. Most working musicians do not (and have not ever) used our message board. It is two different universes. It always has been. Even when the org had 125K active member in 2010, this board barely got over 20K users. This is more directed at lyricists and hobbyists. I have kept it going as it is likely the oldest remaining DIY music message board covering the 90s through today, though post Covid most people shifted to Facebook, Instagram, X and YouTube. As for political discussion, have you seen political posts outside the designated one recently? If so, let me know and I will move it to that post. Every social media site is overwhelmed with political posts, I would not expect this to be different. If you are anti free speech, that is YOUR problem, not mine. If we do not defend free speech, including that which we dislike, all is lost. I have no idea what your political preferences are, but I doubt if you agreed with what some people were saying that you'd be so butt hurt over it. As long as it remains in the designated post, it harms no one. That is a reasonable compromise. The personal attacks have always been an issue on social media, but when those crying victimhood are dishing out just as much venom to others, it is impossible to hold any side accountable. The sad thing is that men in their 60s and 70s are arguing like teenagers and coming to Daddy to whine about being attacked when they are doing the same. If you are being attacked by someone and have not responded in kind now or in the past, let me know as that is an easy fix. So far no one complaining has clean hands. Once the board is fixed and working properly, I expect the 100s of people who haven't been able to get in will start repopulating the site again. The new sign up mechanism has been broken for 3 years but the repair costs were astronomical and made no sense. Fortunately some donations are coming in. I will put you down for a no. But I also notice that those who complain really never support the site they spend hours on every week, with one noisy exception. Voluntary donations keep the lights on, just like it has since the mid 90s.

You are welcome to participate or not, but I can't imagine spending time somewhere you so openly dislike? Very odd.

Imagine a junior college professor who teaches an American history course. The students are diverse in opinions.
Every day, his classroom devolves into a series of arguments ad chaos that the professor allows to go on.

The history dean confronts him about it and the professor indignantly and heroically responds...

"If we do not defend free speech, including that which we dislike, all is lost. As long as it remains in the designated post, it harms no one. That is a reasonable compromise."

The professor goes on to say that it is the failing of the students for lacking civility and decorum that is to blame for the chaos in his classroom..

So, you are blaming your students for the chaos in your classroom. It's your classroom, not theirs.
You are allowing your classroom to devolve into chaos. Nothing is being protected. Students are dropping your course and have been for years. That is what is being lost.
If you do or don't like what Trump is doing, go out into the world and protest against it. That is a true exercise of the 2nd amendment. Allowing your classroom to devolve into insults and disorder is the destruction of your classroom, nothing more.
The future of free speech is not contingent upon unruly, unrestricted classrooms.

I stopped reading your straw man argument when you put it into a college setting. Why? Obvious. In college, free speech would mean the students are welcome to argue any point or position in their written work to be graded by the professor. Most colleges are lectures, papers and tests, and only questions on the material at hand are permitted. So unless a political opinion fit that criteria (i.e. a question about the lecture itself or how an assignment is being graded etc.) then it would not be appropriate.

This is an open forum with a "general" board. We have never stopped people from discussing what is going on, but as you can see now, we also keep in mind that we want music topics in most areas, so if people can't control themselves, we gave them a post. And it wasn't just for a left wing or right wing or no wing argument, it was for all political discussion. We have certainly not treated one opinion more harshly than another. The fact the the two loudest voices were from extreme opposite views certainly made it easy for everyone else to fall in the middle somewhere. But when it encroached on music topics, we reigned it in and gave them a spot to say whatever they want. I don't read it unless someone contacts me with a reason to do so, as you well know from ample experience doing just that.

I notice that John doesn't seem to piss anyone off or receive attacks on his posts including music. So why do you suppose some single you out? You have much the same views as him, so it isn't political. You both post music. It appears to be something else. Perhaps you should figure that out. Could it be they honestly do not like your music? Did you ever consider it? You do post it publicly knowing people are encourage to comment. By the way, the only reason I have any idea of your age is because you like to bring it up. But most of the regulars here are post 60. That is what happens when you run a board this long. We have members who have been with us since 1985! Even those in their early 20s back then are now in their 60s! It has been 15 years since we hit 125K members (my year off due to stroke saw us never pass that number, then email stopped working then more and more issues all the way up to Covid when our events stopped and all our chapters closed. We are just now seeing live events start up again, but the world has changed. This message board is simply a museum of what it was like in the 90s and early 2000s when artists for the first time ever could easily release their own music, build their own fanbases and make a nice living making music outside the label plantations. 25% of our membership has died as our group usually started with people in their late 20s or older and this message board was usually people in their 40s and up. 27 years later and sadly many have died (or moved along to Facebook, where I have found 7K of them and interact daily) including almost all those most loved, minus John. He is the last man standing which universally has been liked by all, including those who disagree with him. You could learn a lot from him. Many of those with (D) by their names were able to keep the peace without it ever blowing up on anyone. They spent day and night here and made sure to head problems off at the pass. Rarely did anything become a serious problem. I wish we still had regular users with that time and desire for peaceful resolution, but if the most busy users of the site aren't going to do it, then I have to fly swatter it when it is brought up.

Nothing is obvious about your point of view Brian. Except that it defies simplistic reasoning and common sense.

What I laid out for you with the professor comparison is basic, simplistic common sense, that the majority of people in the world are aware of. It's essentially inarguable unless there is something wrong with your thinking. There is something wrong with your thinking and it is destroying participation in your own website.

As for open discussions about politics and religion under the banner of free speech...there is no societally or constitutionally relevant discussion going on here. Never has been. It is just odd-balls arguments that distract from the reason that most people are here. Songwriting.

I couldn't care less who likes or dislikes my music. It is what it is. It is not what it is not. It's a hobby, not a profession.

#1 I quit your site and stayed away because of what you allowed to be posted here.
#2 You messaged me inquiring why I hadn't been around and I gave an explanation, and started coming back.
#3 The last time that you came out fundraising, I responded that the site has devolved into nothing but arguments. As a result I saw no point in giving any more money.
#4 I came away from that discussion with the distinct impression that you were going to put a stop to all of the pointless arguments and name calling, so I gave you $300.
#5 All of the garbage started all over again, and I called on you to end it. You said that you never promised to do anything. And you told me to lump it.
#6 I started a post that attracted the trolls and kept them talking until it go so ridiculous that you had to censor it. One troll left. In the course of that you clearly stated that if the remaining troll called me by name with insults, he would be gone. As a result of that threat...the negative behavior stopped for a few weeks. Not just with me but all of the arguments stopped.
#7 The remaining troll slowly started testing the water again with veiled insults.
#8 When that resulted in no consequences, the trolling, name calling, arguments and distracting started ramping up again.
#9 I call on you to make good on your clear and unmistakable threat to ban the troll for calling my name...and here you are attacking me again...after taking my $300.

I, personally, am not going to make any more contributions to a song writing site, characterized by, what I believe to be, pointless non-music related arguments, moderated by delusional thinking that such acrimony is necessary in the fight to keep tyrants from taking over government.

I like having a place to post songs. Nevertheless this site belongs to Brian Austin Whitney, and it is yours to run however you choose, misguided or not.

I have no problem reacting to trolls. Did he post a threat? I didn't read his stuff beyond the straw man opening. If he wants his account to simply block some or all active users, I can do that for him (and have offered it). "Banning" is one of many things that can be done. But he is welcome to post his stuff like everyone else. If he becomes unruly, like anyone else, I will take action. Obviously as YOU know and others, I give people long long leashes. If they hang themselves with it, so be it. We have had mentally ill people who literally begged me to block them. I did something better. (Not telling). I solved two problems at once. Plus we have a new board coming, so I will then have even more options for people who can't just do their thing without attacking and trolling. It will be so easy to deal with. But everyone knows once sign ups work again, trolls will get in, including familiar faces which is why I don't bother banning people. Why waste the effort? New accounts have a probationary time frame. If they troll, they disappear. If someone has an old account that suddenly starts posting troll stuff, they disappear. Lots of back end info helps. I added 4 new people today. I know who 3 are, but one is a mystery. We will find out soon enough.
