We're going to see the supply chains break down. Ships aren't being unloaded to avoid the tariffs. No ships, no transportation of goods world-wide. This thing is going to explode and Musk knows it.

You and I have some common ground. In the space of a few days Musk has gone from,

Authoritian-Nazi-Oligarch

to

A brilliant business person who speaks with great credibility.

And you are right...as of 250408 0249pm, the DOW is down 772 points.
So you're prediction that the world's economy is being undone by Trumpenstein has been re-established since this morning. Congratulations on that.

Dow' all time high 45,008.75 (Jan2025)
Dow current: 37,193.28
difference 7,815.47
9k is 20%. Closing in.

SIDENOTE: It could be that the stock-jockeys that play the market from one hour to the next, ran in looking for the dead-cat and found it, and then ran back out.

You are 100% correct....and if structural damage occurs in the stock markets the ability to obtain new capital via equity might be nearly impossible....I would think right now some public offerings are off the table

OR...
Musk's world is already crashing because of his DOGE profile.
He's got to say some things that make the Libtardian Vandals quit defacing Teslas, as well as reversing the stock drop. Who knows?
Or he could really mean it.
Or a hybrid/

It's a drug for him.
Donny overcame all comers and won back the presidency.
And now he has seriously upset the entire world from a chair in the Oval Office.

Standard stuff on a global scale.
Set the house on fire and give 'em one way out.

We'll see if it works.

All I want is a new pick up truck.
4 guitars
2 motorcycles
and the govt sends me money for not being dead yet.

A new truck and I'm flush until the lights go out. wink
So far the prices are steady on what I'm looking at.

LOL...do say I I enjoy the ride here. Green this morning, red this afternoon. Tariffs on China over 100%, Navarro compared to his clone

Europe dropping tariffs on booze to get tariffs dropped on Wine and such. EuroDetroit Netherlands based Stellantis is not looking great here. Could Chrysler, Dodge, Ram, Jeep come home to Michigan and let Fiat, Alfa Romeo, Lancia, Maserati, and Abarth go back to Italy? Will Peugeut and Citroen go back to France? Vauxhall to GB and Opel to Germany? What car parts will qualify under our renewed free trade agreement between Mexico, USA and Canada?

SCOTUS lets Trump loose with his deportation power under the old statute but does re inforce the rights of those so detained for deportation.
Means they are backing Boasberg and trying to prevent cases like Kilmar Abrego Garcia and the government saying...yeah we made a mistake but there is nothing we can do about it now...and the Justice Department removal of US Attorney Erez Reuveni because he expressed frustration at not being able to answer key questions from a judge over the mistaken deportation even though he'd asked those questions himself. AG Pam Bondi said every Department of Justice attorney is required to zealously advocate on behalf of the United States. Any attorney who fails to abide by this direction will face consequences....like removal.”

She also said Mr Garcia should stay where he is and a bunch of stupid other things on Tuesday outside the white house justifying why she felt he was best gone to this maximum security facilty where there is absolutely no one there to advocate for his right to release him back into US custody.

Glad SCOTUS put Justice Boasberg's decision back on the books as law the government must observe
Marty here is one consequence I will say I take joy in seeing that stands up to Trump's actions.

John

I suspect the US is going to end up with some gains, but I dont think that anyone is going to run-the-table.
I personally dont look for it to run out of control before things get tamped down...but China is concerning.

Everyone is claiming victory at SCOTUS today. Trump is, ACLU is, talking drones across cable are.
It appears that the 1798 law is a good law. Are we at war? "War on terror" by definition maybe.
We'll see.

The thing to watch imo is "due process."
If someone has a deportation order, I suppose due process is done and the only remaining due process is expulsion.
If someone claims not to be a gang member, is due process some legal labyrinth or a single hearing before a immigration judge hand picked by Donny?

Dunno. We'll see.

The wierd thing is the libtardians fighting tooth and nail to keep criminals in the country. I guess the DEM approval rating is too high for them.

Yeah Dom I thought about you and basketball and the finals and such...so here's a nod to Florida by 2 point over Houston

And another reason to like us...we gave you basketball....imagine if royalties there counted in our balance of trade deficit as a no cost benefit to you?

Another classic choke job by both Duke and Houston. Houston had a 13:,point lead at one point last night, and couldn't even get a shot off to tie it win last play.

Duke ruins brackets every single year, cause you HAVE to pick them Final four cause they make it every year. They just can't win it

With all their recruits they are basically a minor league team for NBA. Kids don't go there for education or play ball, they go to get to the NBA

Now we can't invest in stocks anymore. Trump is manipulating the stock markets. He just killed investor's confidence in stocks. There was too much pressure on him so he backed down with his tariff plans. Nobody wanted to kiss his ass. What he is doing is a warning sign for every trader. Who knows what he will do tomorrow. My advice: get out of stocks.

Trump just killed all of Marty's tariff arguments. To put it in Fdem's words "poof!". Just like that. What's with the trade deficit? How does he want to fix that? Or maybe it doesn't need to be fixed. He was bluffing and it didn't work. In 90 days we go through the whole thing again? When is somebody going to stop him? He's a clown in a circus or how do you describe what he's doing. I'm interested in Marty's take here. Stay away from stocks while the mad man is in control. Who knows if he's buying puts or calls before he makes his announcements.

LOL just more proof that tariffs are stupid

Trump just announced a pause in reciprocal tarrifs except for 125% against China and the markets are cheeriously green.

Maybe just maybe markets are saying don't tariff cause that will have horrible effects on people and trade and pausing tariffs is a good idea.

But Marty is right in that tariffs and trade balances are top of mind for any conversation with the US right now where the topic is foreign trade.

I expect saner minds will come up with solutions where everybody loses something but everybody is better off than before.

Now at some point Mike Johnson and Congress and the Senate are going to have to speak with their responsibilities in directing what Trump is doing by presidential decree right now

Not even gonna try that one, Marty....he has a window of opportunity to ease up on tariffs say to max 10% anywhere....probably a few days before structural damage begins to creep in...ie supply chains shutting down....if he digs in. it may seem like 2008/9 was a walk in the park
I think I called this one, folks

Good call Steve.

Trump doubling down on China was probably an attempt to save face as he reversed his previous policy, but it will sharpen fears that trade between the world’s two largest economies will grind to a halt, severely hurting both sides and sending negative reverberations across the globe. The question is which of the two countries will back down first because both sides are bluffing and really don't want a trade war. The Trump administration tried to spin an embarrassing retreat into a great victory, explaining that the reciprocal tariffs were paused because of a rush of countries wanting to do deals with Washington. The sad thing is ... it's not over. In 90 days it starts all over again. Who is going to stop this nonsense?
The DOW (stock traders) is the loser because Trump can manipulate the stock market and that will scare investors away.

You fellas are desperate to tell yourselves that you're right. Even though you're having to cherry pick out of several responses. Listen to Uncle Marty on this. It is in early innings. Nothing is over. This was a head fake that no one including anyone here saw coming.

And Rob, the fantasy and Desperation in your post makes me feel a bit sorry for you.

Trump's problem was not the stock market, it was the bond market....the tariffs are inflationary....interest rates go up....bond yields were jumping....that's a big problem for the Don...he wants the Feds to drop their rates

That is a very narrow narrative. The Republican narrative is that this head fake was wired in from the beginning. I personally don't know what went on or when. there is more to come before this is over

Well, Rawhide, I must have known something....I got it right...actually it was an easy prediction...the Dow was calling for a big recession

Hey Marty,
this is exactly the way I thought you would react. Great response. Like Bachmann Turner Overdrive sang: You ain't seen nothing yet - Here's something you're never gonna will forget.
Steve Bannon is right, Trump will be impeached. Marty, I didn't say that, Bannon did. You ain't seen nothing yet. You sound like this whole thing is a game ... head fake? Do you really believe the Republican narrative? I mean, you say yourself that you don't know what went on. Trump said well in advance today that everybody should buy stocks. This is not the way the stock market works. You don't tell your supporters to buy stocks and then you say something that moves the market. I'm not desperate. This guy is ruining the stock market and you call it a head fake! Trump is going to regret the damage he has already done to the market. Have fun dealing with the inflation he and China are causing. I must admit, so far Steve was right, you weren't. What's with the trade deficit? And what's with our country's deficit? I heard the administration needs more money. I thought Musk was doing a great job. Now, they want to raise the deficit? Don't tell me things have to get worse before they get better. Trump didn't say that before he was elected.

Marty at least take some professional pride in your hobby of engaging with libtardians by adding "and their lapdogs and lackies" to really drive home the sneer

"Straightening out the delusional thinking of" and engaging to me are synonymous just so you understand. Language is a beautiful thing to play with.

I'll bet you could do some creative drive by sneering in your new pickup. Pretend you are a smart successful professional looking down on others' choices.

and yeah Tony, like Real Coke!

Steve just two libtardians delusionally musing.... So prices go up , inflation goes up, interest rates must go up, US National Debt service cost interest plus goes up in annual deficit.

Consequential to Trump?

Elderly couple sitting at the table eating breakfast....they both just retired
Husband:...”Hey honey, what are you up to today?”
Wife:....I’m going to be starting that art class I enrolled in last week...and you?”
Husband:....I’m gonna go down to the employment office...see what’s available....Boy that Liberation Day last week was fun...I wonder if they’ll make it an annual event? Remember, back in the good old days we used to celebrate “Infrastructure Week”....now that was a hoot. I guess, with all these tariffs, we can only afford a day now.”
Wife:...Yes, those were the days. Hey, have you heard the new name for those celebrating “Liberation Day”...they call them “Libtardians”.

No....his only objective is to have his name in the news everyday....including attacks on him....just spell my name right mentality..that’s the Narcissism coming out which is the driving force behind everything he says and does....the proof.... it didn’t really bother him that the market was tanking and people were getting hurt because everyone was talking about him....remember when he was John Barron talking to reporters etc on the phone as the vice-president of the Trump Organization....that’s scary sick
Steve

Another story...

Two businessmen get in a disagreement over something or other.

#1 "I sell you 2 million dollars worth of goods every year."
#2 "I know that you do." I sell you 500 thousand dollars worth of goods every year."

#1 "That's right, I sell you 4 times what you sell me...so it's gonna be my way or the highway!"
#2 "Oh is it? You're a moron.

Thank you for pointing this out....it confirms, once again, you know nothing about trade...stick with drawing pictures of buildings...you know how to do that
Trade between countries does not have to balance out and you and the Don don't get that
Canada will renegotiate a new deal (4th time with US) then the trade deficit starts again....It's the imbalance of markets between the countries and of course dumb US negotiators and a really dumb fellow signing the CUSMA that create the deficit

That is one of two points that I didnt have time to make yesterday.

#1 "In the room"
I was not in the room and neither were you, therefore neither one of us can truly know what ALL was involved in what went on yesterday. Nor can we know what the contingency plans were in the overall strategy.

#2 Cause and effect
If you are such a soothsayer, and you have divined the entire situation from the frozen north, WHY DID YOU NOT TELL ME THAT THINGS WERE IN PLACE THAT WERE GOING TO SWING THE DOW UP 3000 POINTS IN ONE DAY? I would have bought a depressed stock...or two. I bought a new truck yesterday. A tip from you could have paid for it...if you knew.

I'll answer #2 for you...because you didn't actually know. I asked you the day before what the market might do and you didn't know. You're a smart guy for sure, but there is a lot that you and I dont get to see, that explains the path of events...regardless of what Rachel Maddow and her hand picked talking heads may parrot.

Rachel et al are selling a head trip to a niche group because it pays them very well.

Those arent my words. They came from a non-partisan who knows a lot more than me or you.
That is the situation at its core. You dont want to believe it because your "happy ending" depends on it not being true, but it is.

I don't think that the US and Canada are going to throw down. The US has a much bigger concern and it appears that the US is in-process of aligning its forces against that concern.
But if they ever do and the US cuts Canada off from the market buys 3/4 of its exports, Canada would run out of oxygen long before the US.

So, simply approach this fairly.

Yes...a phyrric victory if there ever was on Marty

How is this for a story

MagaCorp and EvenMoreMagaCorp are both US companies that do very well

In fact so well that they each set up companies in a tax sheltered country to own their brands and trademarks

Big royalty payments go out every month of year...out of the country....for services...what a trade imbalance
