This is a song I wrote for some of my good friends in the Great White North, when I spent a good deal of time teaching and working up there. It';s for Everette's 81 Birthday, trying to bridge the language barrier. My Canadian buddies think all of us from the south say the word "Ya'll" (You All) all of the time, and WE DO! and We think they all say the word "EH" all the time. THEY DO. Here's my song about it. Happy Birthday Everette.
FIXIN' (Marc-Alan Barnette)
Every since, my company, sent me to the Great White North All my buddys and their wives call and ask me if I, Can come and speak Southern of course They love to hear my drawl when I say "Hey Yall" It makes them all laugh and call We may be separated by a common lagugage But they just love to year me talk
CHORUS I SAY "I'M FIXIN' TO EAT, FIXIN TO DRINK FIXING TO GO DOWN TOWN" I'M GOING OVER YONDER CAUSE I THINK I'LL PONDER THINGS I'VE BEEN THINKING ABOUT OPEN SOME MOULSON BEER, GRILL ALABAMA DEER, PASS AROUND SOME MUSKEEDINE WINE WE'VE GOT SOME CULTURES MIXIN CAUSE I THINK WE'RE FIXIN' TO HAVE OURSELVES A REAL GOOD TIME
Now I admit, before I came up here I myself was quite naive I thought everybody dressed like Mountines Lived in Igloos, and just ate poutine But now I see, their just like me A bunch of good ol' boys and women Solving all the problems of the world Just a little Redneck UN
Chorus I SAY "I'M FIXIN' TO EAT, FIXIN TO DRINK FIXING TO GO DOWN TOWN" I'M GOING OVER YONDER CAUSE I THINK I'LL PONDER THINGS I'VE BEEN THINKING ABOUT OPEN SOME MOULSON BEER, GRILL ALABAMA DEER, PASS AROUND SOME MUSKEEDINE WINE WE'VE GOT SOME CULTURES MIXIN CAUSE I THINK WE'RE FIXIN' TO HAVE OURSELVES A REAL GOOD TIME
There you go. Happy Birthday Everett. Always good to see you, Eh?

Thank you Marc, I'm touched by the song, I like it. I live in the province of Newfoundland and Eh is not so much used as the word B'y , like saying, how are ya doin' b'y, b'y is short for boy, not meaning any disrespect, it's like some people using "man" in saying, "what's happening man". Now saying b'y have been misinterpreted as a put down by some mainland black people, until they realize it is a term of endearment, not an insult. We have a reputation of talking fast and people have a hard time understanding us, but we tell them it is not so much us talking fast, it is that they just listen too slow. Thanks again for the greetings, appreciate it my friend.

"If someone is truly a jerk, or truly is not deserving of any positive reply from you, polite indifference is the best response you can give. Do not insult. Do not slam. Do not follow the urge to be nasty. Simply be politely indifferent." –Brian Austin Whitney
