If I was running a song writing contest to maximize my profit, I would award a prize to the top song(s) and make everybody else a semi-finalist or at least give them an honorable mention and encourage them to come back next year because they came so close this year.

I confess to having entered the lyric contest run by American Songwriter magazine which is an actual printed magazine that arrives in the mailbox. My band mate won 4th place in their monthly contest and they published his lyric and a profile of him in their printed magazine which I thought was worthy.

I also think that the John Lennon and Eurovision contests might be above board, but the odds of winning are very long relative to the cost of entry.

Otherwise, I would run away.
