Hi Brian... I build & use my own pedals almost exclusively. Pretty cheap, easy to put together and the modifications you can make to the circuits are pretty much infinite. Plus, there's the pride factor that comes with a gear head asking you about your stuff as you climb off the stage. Very cool.  Anyway, the best place to start, for me anyway, was at http://DIYstompboxes.com ... they have tutorials, circuit designs, layout designs, photos, all kinds of stuff. Jump in man!
