There was a recent PBS Special Concert featuring multiple artists from the 1970's Soul Music hits. Sister Sledge, Stylistics and so on.
They had an onstage band that just played great for every act. From upbeat songs like "We are Family" to ballads like "You make me feel brand new". This band was really good.
It was piano, guitar, bass, drum and keyboard/organ. The bass player was exceptional but I didn't get his name.
See if you can catch this PBS Special if it airs again.
It is well worth watching.
