This topic has brought in a lot of good feedback. I do think we need to take the audience and night into consideration when using stage banter. I can cite many examples of people coming to me afterwards, because a song I'd prefaced connected with them. They did sit and listen. I haven't had ANYONE (except impatient bandmates!) say "Talk less!" Also - it's a great point that banter helps pass the time during instrument changes, tunings etc. I'd say the best storyteller I've ever seen is Bruce Springsteen, in his "glory days."
