It is just the way things are.
People are no longer looking for idols.
They are looking for reflections of their own lives. "That song is about me."

A very very fortunate few get that figured out and deliver something that hits the jackpot.
Taylor Swift is the best example that I know.

To add to your point. With roughly a billion people in the world, it's very hard to write " what people want to hear"

I think radio plays a perception of what one wants to hear.

But if you start writing with intent to relate to people, good chance it's gonna fail.

We don't know. I write from a basic emotion, a concept comes later.

I'm a huge fan of the who. I related to their organized angst, I didn't ever know exactly what they were talking about.

English ideas and geography was a barrier. But something spoke to me. Something basic, the icing was the great musicality and attitude.

I didn't get the same feeling from the Stones or led Zeppelin, who I also love, but didn't get me inside.

Springsteen is world famous still selling out football stadiums. He clearly spoke to people in profound ways. They've written books about his impact.

I related to all of it, even if I didn't agree with it or experienced it

But you can't try to do that.

My songs are a mixed bag. Some were just trying to write a song from a title, or a hook. How can I make it work.

Those wouldn't be in any album of mine.

Mine, you won't find any love songs. I don't know how to write love songs. Only been in love once or twice.

I understand it, which is half the battle but I don't have any love songs.

Lust songs, relationship songs, breakup songs, first meeting song.

But maybe you can't identify with my songs, but I'm sure there's people who can

If ever given the Chance.

Theres alot of living in my stuff.
