Whatever for Verse There’s a church with a cross on top of the hill. It’s a symbol for all to see. A reminder to him of what he’s become. A part of who he used to be. There’s a girl he promised his undying love Still waiting for him to come home. She’s wondering that if or when he comes back Will he be the man she’s known. [Chorus] The thunder reminds him of the big guns. The way they shook the ground. The lighting, the flashing of bursting bombs Men dying all around. He answered the call he went off to war. She said, whatever for. He survived a year and a half in hell. My god whatever for. [Verse] There’s a girl with a cross and she’s kneeling down. She’s saying a prayer for her man. She’s wondering about the letters he wrote. How he copes with the blood on his hands. There’s a field with a cross on the top of the hill For a brother he lost in war. He lost a friend, his lover, perhaps his soul And he ponders whatever for. [Chorus] The thunder reminds him of the big guns. The way they shook the ground. The lighting, the flashing of bursting bombs Men dying all around. He answered the call he went off to war. She said, whatever for. He survived a year and a half in hell. My god whatever for. [Bridge] A purple heart, a silver star. A hero’s home from war. He doesn’t talk about it My God, whatever for. [Verse] There’s a church with a cross on top of the hill. He asks himself what for.
