Only Child
CHORUS Only Child of mine I'm sorry if you're lonely It was once too easy Not to see I should have given you A brother to look up to Or sister to soothe your fears When solitary tears Turn your only world to blue
It seems too late in life To change my early ways To give you another To help complete your days
If I could have the chance To take back past mistakes I'd create a new life A second birthday cake
CHORUS Only Child of mine I'm sorry if you're lonely It was once too easy Not to see I should have given you A brother to look up to Or sister to soothe your fears When solitary tears Turn your only world to blue
Shared blood who'd surely love To right you when you're wrong Create new memories Long after I am gone
Others who have siblings Can say some hurtful things Maybe they don't understand That only one can sting
BRIDGE I'll always believe Perfection was achieved When two hearts Became one To create you My son
CHORUS Only Child of mine I'm sorry if you're lonely It was once too easy Not to see I should have given you A brother to look up to Or sister to soothe your fears When solitary tears Turn your only world to blue

Sweet as molasses, Lisa. Well written, too.
"Shared blood" seems mildly awkward as written. I like the chorus, but could not come up with a head tune, but I'm no musician, so, there you go. I DID do a quick re-write to make it fit the tune I hear. Should I show it? Oh, I don't want you to take it like I think it's an improvement. It isn't and I don't. OK, here. Only Child of mine I'm sorry if you're lonely If only I had seen it then A brother as your constant friend And someone you could count on, too Or sister who could soothe your fears Each time those solitary tears Turn your little world to blue
I think it's a great topic, unexplored as far as I know. Best to you in the New Year (and to that only child of yours). Guess he already has pet(s)? There's always adoption and you can fit the age...just don't think Russia...

Hi Frank,
Hey -- I DO like that a lot! There are a couple of things in your changes that I still need to mull over...but I'm liking 95% of it! You have me thinking about the "shared blood" line too. It is awkward...hmmmmmm....
Also, lots of adopted pets and plants in my house! I heard about the new Russian law regarding adoption. It's a shame that they didn't let the adoptions that were already in motion go through, before implementing the law. If the children had already met the prospective parents, and were already dreaming of a family, then I think that the adoptions should have been allowed to go through. To do otherwise is very sad. Maybe a Grandfather Clause will be added.
Thank you for your great help with this!
Lisa

Hey Michael,
Yes, there is good and bad! I read an interesting book once which talked about how parents are driven to get their genes out, and so, on a primal level, having lots of children is a great thing for them. Children, on the other hand, see each new sibling, on a primal level, as competition for limited resources. So they're not so enthusiastic about each new sibling who comes along!
You were the only boy with three sisters? Poor you! My grandmother had eight sisters in her family and one brother. The brother was never called by his real name. He was just always known as "Brother." I still don't know what his real name was!
Thanks for your visit! Lisa

Hi Mackie,
Hey -- you should write a book about your experiences in the orphanage/reform school. I'm sure that the little details that seem just normal to you would be fascinating to others.
My son (nine years old) brought an assignment home, and it was one of those fill-in- the-blanks reading assignments, with a list of vocabulary words that you have to fit correctly into the story.
The story started out about a guy going hiking with someone and they grew close. The story said, "he became close like a ___________ to me." The word my son was supposed to fill in was "brother" but he used the word, "hiker" instead! I realized that to him, a sibling is just an abstract thought! Like you said, I guess we slowly learn about things that we missed, as life progresses!
Thanks for your insights!
Lisa

Kids say the funniest things. I'll bet you laughed before you cried. "Like a hiker to me" reminds me of Cheech and Chong's "Basketball Jones" The kid said he took his basketball everywhere. "That basketball was like a basketball to me." I always thought that was the funniest line.
I grew up with a couple of sisters and I didn't like it. I got a brother when I was eight. He wasn't much good either until he got out of the Navy. Now we are good friends. My sisters, meh.

Hi Taggy,
Yes, I did laugh when I first saw the "brother" line. It particularly stood out because he's very good at spelling and vocabulary and usually doesn't get things wrong....and so I just happened to notice the red mark on that! I like that basketball line -- very apropos to this situation too -- ho, ho!
I do think that brothers and sisters can be overrated (lol!), but they shape us and make us are who we are -- for better or worse!
Thanks for stopping by!

Think this is the Saddest Love Song I've ever read, Mz Maryland.
KNOW Every Mom wants All-The-Best for her Kid(s)...(but AM guilty of NOT realizin' SOME Only-Kids are "Only"..because of Medical Reasons...)
I'm oldest kid, with 2 sibs...so of course I've favored that over Only-Child-dom...(with my sorta Spoiled Only-Child Cousin as "Exhibit A"..bein' the Poster-Kid for multi-kid families..in my Mind's Eye.)
But Your Lyric sure opens my eyes to all the hurt that can come of not well-thought-out statements regarding Only Chilo-dom.
I Listen...Therefore I Learn! Great Job! Good Luck with it, M'LadyChum!

Hi Stan,
Thank you so much for your very thoughtful note! Perhaps your cousin would have had the same traits, even in a multi-child family! (He'd just be known as the difficult one!) I read a funny article that an only child wrote about his experiences. He said that he never wants any attention, and wants to always fade into the upholstery -- but that is seen as being snobby, because he's an only child! I guess we all face our problems, no matter when we're born into a family!
I appreciate your thoughts on this -- thanks again for sharing them!
Lisa
