One Night in Yangon Hi everyone, I'm from India and a new entrant to Just Plain Folks. This is a song that I wrote after a trip to Yangon a month ago. It's a love song from a land which is right now at a turning point in history. Hope you like it! ~Souvik Misra

souvik, welcome to JPF!!! well, the melody is really, really nice. the lyrics kind of left me wanting though. most of the song is about the two people meeting with just a tease about the country changing? which do you want this to be about? just my take on it.... i enjoyed listening though, again that melody is super!!! :))) scotty

Hi Scotty, thanks for your comment. Glad you liked the melody. About the lyrics... what I tried to do was write a love song, set in the context of a changing nation. So tomorrow will be a different day, let's make the most of the moment, tonight. That was the intention, don't know how far it worked though!

Hi Donna, here you go:
One Night in Yangon
One night in Yangon, the city was sleeping Neon signs were flashing on the alley below We were awake with our weed and our drinking As we were watching a city unknown
One night in Yangon the moon was shining The stars were sparkling in your eyes We were two strangers flirting with danger As the Shwedagon lights filled up the sky
One night in Yangon, two insomniacs Two total strangers, two maniacs Didn’t want to wait too long One night in Yangon
One night in Yangon down in that alley A monk walked slowly past a billboard sign The shining face of the billboard beauty Whispered to us about the changing times
One night in Yangon, a storm was waiting The floodgates were opening in the land of calm We knew tomorrow will be a different day But the night was ours and the night was young!
One night in Yangon, two insomniacs Two total strangers, two maniacs Didn’t want to wait too long One night in Yangon

Hi Souvik,
Love your vocal style!
Synth brass I'm not so keen on, but the song overall is strong.
The hi-hat seems EQ'd strangely--it could be that MP3 quality can't handle high, high-end too well.
The kind of dampened, muted keyboard sounds in the mid range are very well thought out.
Vocally, you are star quality, in my opinion. There's a little bit of "Greg Lake" in your upper register ("Still You Turn Me On") but overall you have a pretty fresh sound. Lots of little stylistic quirks that set you apart. Crisp consonants, a nice vibrato, attitude, and control.
Mike

Ooh Mike! You made my day! Thanks a ton for you encouraging words.
As far as the synth brass is concerned, even I'm not a big fan of it. After each line of the chorus, which is in C Minor, I wanted to have a thumping Ab Major and G7... so to achieve that I used the brass. But yes, may be a strong electric guitar could have done the same job. However, I consider this to be only a songwriter's arrangement (I computed the track myself on FlStudio and recorded the vocals and mixed it on Garageband) and I could use only the samples that I have in my limited sound bank. The arrangement obviously requires much better sounds. Thanks for pointing out the issues. Will surely look into it. But thanks again for all the encouragement.
