Hi Dottie

I love when someone says my name three times in a row or types it LOL it really expresses the emphasis on how sincere they are being smile

Not to hijack such a FUN thread with "Woes Of Me" lol but why not LOL

First thanks so much for your feelings about my little song. Given how I'm feeling lately it is a HUGELY nice thing to hear. Also reminds me that I should post some old songs up on the mp3 boards 1- For those who never heard them 2- Cause I'm not writing anymore.

Lets answer some of those great questions some which I have been asked many times by many people.

1- Personally on the song I'm proud that it's genuinely liked by so many people. Many in which I don't know. A ways back we were doing a vote/pick of your favorite songs you ever heard posted here on the boards. While I was very proud that five different people picked five different songs of mine. I could not ignore that "Brooklyn" got mentioned several times itself.

Also proud that I get emails or comments about it on You Tube
it has like 30,000 NO TRICK hits. Ya know the computer geeks know how to get 30 thousand hits on a song in a week.... ANY SONG

2- Wow was that a hit song? If not you should be pitching that song!

Having a hit and getting a hit are two TOTALLY different things.
It was pitched, not nearly enough biz people though. But it was directly sent to Clive Davis and while complimented for a few things it was rejected.
I have no problem with that, he rejects everything :)and has been turning me down for 28 years. Sometimes a connection can be too BIG! Others around and other around him on board would be alot more persuasive.

I just don't like when they try to say your not up too par with current hits, most hits that are soooooo bad musically and lyrically it makes you sick AND your open minded, mind you.

3 - Mike I read that it’s an older song BUT it could easily fit on the radio I don’t care how old it is, some things never change. Am I wrong? Do you think that it’s dated?

Yes it's a bit dated, but really ANYTHING can be done production wise by the people who have the knack to be made current ANYTHING! What some people don't realize is in most POP music anything LIVE feels or sounds dated. And if your voice is not a kid sounding one, or a typical female radio voice or not a Hip Hop one it is OUT! for the most part. Still this could almost have been sung by somebody more sophisticated and yet VERY poppy like a "Billy Joel etc... This subject matter and approach is not SEX driven or related so there's 90% chances out the window.

4- I know you sing it great but I’m sure there are people that would love to record and perform this song.

Thanks, but like 90% of my songs they were never written or shopped at least with the intentions of me singing them.
So really any label could take some young good looking kid from behind some register who doesn't need all the voice in the world. Give them a catchy song, and make a video. Spread it around and it will do "Something"

Isn't that what that silly "Rico Suave" hit song was all about.
This "I'm Like Brooklyn" is like that in regards of it being a Novelty Type Song. Humbled as I am and believe me I am. I feel this songs Bass line has more musical merrit than that entire song lol
I also know that there are 5 million people in Brooklyn if you never played this anywhere else but Brooklyn you'd sell a a half million copies. They are VERY VERY proud!
That is something you can try to do yourself but you'd need to be healthy and young to even start to think about. I'm neither.

5 - When I watch you I feel like I’ve wasted my whole life! I’m learning guitar now but I don’t have anyone to play with so I’m sure I’m teaching myself bad habits, lol. Sorry I got carried away

Dot, it's okay to feel that way for a little while I do it ALL THE TIME... I put on Stevie Wonders albums and think about taking lighter fluid to all my equipment.
Did you know that I am RIGHT NOW teaching myself how to read music with the guitar. I am on BOOK ONE! "Mary had a little lamb"

I never learned to read music or learned theory. I always took the short path to my dreams which turned out to be the longest path and hardest road EVER! So now that I'm wiped out from health problems and I'm musically exhausted from ALMOST "getting" not "having" that elusive hit song, being let down COUNTLESS times for soooo many years.

I feel like a wasted a whole life too, and certainly the last six years of it more than anything. So we are alot more alike them you realize. Please understand your a good writer and a promising good lyricist. PLAY into your strengths if you want to advance what you LOVE doing into some work and reward.

I find a little comfort in knowing how people feel about the songs and me. And also that they are just as amazed and confused
that I can't get help or anywhere with seeing 64 doctors with a 14 year medical problem as they are with my 40 year music career
giving me no songwriting deal. And a total of $700 in pay for a lifetime.... Just this year too smile

So thanks for making my song a HIT in your life. It REALLY means alot to me. Otherwise I probably wouldn't even be around.

Thanks
Mike

Sorry for the hijack guys

Thanks!
Peace Mike

WELCOME DOTTIE!!!

...and please.... don't worry about keeping up with everything... it will likely be impossible especially as time goes by. If you note how Calvin is responding - (AND CALVIN, SURELY YOU HAVE SONGS YOU CAN POST!!! lol) ... just on a song or two here and there... catch what you can... a one-line comment or one or two words or even "I listened" is great....

And I happen to agree with you, that "Brooklyn" should've at least been sold to the CITY OF BROOKLYN for PR by now... sigh..... unrecognized fame in our midst....

grin

@Colin - Again I really enjoyed this song! I am sure appreciating your songwriting, production, and singing talents! I am not always up for an "on the road" song but you pulled me in with the first lines and there are some GREAT thoughts in there... so GOOD! thank you!

@Jen - SUPER job on Hungry Eyes... cool to hear that song again, and first time for me hearing it from a female vocal, really enjoyed it! You sound great on everything! ..and see above... you know I think you ROCK on that Jeffersons song!! more!

@Ann - (I may shoot myself in the foot here with a bunch of you but I don't know Peter Gabriel all that well - just that I didn't like that weird weird MTV video in the 80s... LOL... so) I didn't know this song ahead of time... but HEY! I really like your vocals on this song - love the tender Boom Boom Boom's of your heart! and fully enjoyed this rendition on a new song for me! Your low register sounds very cool here too. Nice range you have!

@Mojo
-- hey I love this Beatles tune...! Great job here -- I love the bridge section especially - great Lennon tone you're injecting in there...! super cool, makes me want to sing it too! :-) Your range sounds perfect for singing John's songs - truly! this was relaxing smile as I sit here vegetating on a Saturday afternoon in my armchair smile

--King Bee ... I was first intro'd to this with karaoke, LOL! hey GREAT blues sound going on here, too! yeah!!! rock IT! Wail! YEAH!! you got it! awesome!

LOL and there's still food in the song too... heheehe I do believe there's more food mentioned in songs than you first think!! grin

-- your original: OOH YEAH LOVE IT!!! thanks for having the lyrics up too :-) but yeah this minimal production is way cool and very swamp-spooky just right for the song... totally rocks ... would be fun to hear it with some wailing electric solo going on too ... but this is one I wanna grab and sing myself! sounds totally fun to sing!! ...and the backing track - by itself -- could hear that in a movie soundtrack in a spooky swamp scene... just waiting for something to jump out at you.... with glowing eyes in the dark... pushing a little canoe along with a pole... gators peering just above the waterline... this really does set a scene!! I'm impressed!

**funny side note** I just looked up the origin of the word "Mojo" and it really is a CAJUN word or possibly African... used to be a little satchel of small "magical items" you carried inside your clothes... so... in the old days, you could literally -- wait for it---

LOSE YOUR MOJO.....
ooops
LOL bad joke... sorry hehe grin grin grin

So anyway... interesting nickname you have for yourself there ... fun!!!

@Glyn
-- SUPER JOB on Blueberry Hill, your voice is SO GREAT for that! very soulful... your true talent is shining out - soul and feel -- on anything you sing!!

--I don't know this "New Fool" song either... but wow this is also just great! terrific choice for your singing. Sounds great!

THANKS SO MUCH EVERYONE!!

Oh and... I happened to notice... we have 300+ posts but over 1300 VIEWS here... so there are a lot of folks lurking around - I hope they're listening and also having fun! Hello lurkers!!! heheehe grin grin

Glynda,

I love new fool at an old game. You can sing girl you should do it more often. I’m really enjoying and learning that people can sing on this karaoke forum!

Jen,

Wow you were rocking out with the Jefferson’s. You were hitting all those notes too. I’ve NEVER been anywhere to hear karaoke so this is very cool for me. Seriously you did a great job and I can assure you I didn’t laugh.

Colin,

You sound great as usual. I don’t know this song is it one you wrote?

Glynda,

I think I remember this lyric I always like it. Another very good song!

Hey Glynda,

I don’t think I’ve ever heard this one “Where his heart has been”. You are on a roll. Try not to overdo it at work.

Hey Dottie,

Yes that's one of my attempts at modern country. Thanks Glyn and Linda for the compliments on this one!

Now I need to do some listening.

By the way, I uploaded a better mix of this one - it was a rough mix that was up before.

@Linda,Thanx so much for the kind words,i think i developed John's singing way back in the 60's listening to my sisters Beatles records, well, the best i can anyway.I wish i could find "Mother" by John Lennon on karaoke, that's my fav by him.So glad you loiked "Strawberry Fields"!Well i had to sing "King Bee" to redeem myself from "Sugar Sugar"LOL.And yeah, there is some unmetioned food in the "Back Door Man" song,it goes without sayin' i guess.Well "Voodoo Man" is as close as i can get to that swampy feel,i just need to get some real musicians on it.I'm glad you have the visuals from it,that makes my "mission accomplished"!Thanx!May the MOJO be with ya!

Okay something weird for the weekend. This is a rap. Jerry Miller (dba zonemusicinc), a cutting-edge electronica performer in Cleveland, wrote the "beat" for me, and I recorded the rap to it. Funny, but the real rappers I know didn't like it at all. They thought I was making fun of them (well, duh).

I have a son named Michael who goes by Mike...
and when I want to really annoy him (he's 20 btw) and need his attention I say this over and over very fast: "MIKE MIKE MIKE MIKE MIKE MIKE MIKE!!!"

...Only I do it obnoxious, so my voice sounds like a little dog barking its rapid little annoying "yip" ... ROFLMBO ... HA!
