Hi Herbie
I like their approaches. I read of another artists (rap) doing the same thing. At the beginning of his career he gave away his music. Now he is a rap mega star. He reasoned that he created a buzz for his music the universe would supply his needs. I guess he was right. His story is in Russell Simmons new book--. Super Rich: A Guide to having it All. And his name was Fifty Cent. It a very interesting read.

Hi Red Ya, if you have no family and no bills and no pressure, you can toss your life in the ring, give your music away, tour endlessly and hope it pays off for you ! ! I couldn't do that ! 50 cent ? Take you the candy shop !

Ah yes but what about the catch? And here it is Tatum is a singer who has enjoyed success as a songwriter. Her song “She’s Country” was the most-played song on country radio in 2009.Regardless really it's still all about hard work and perseverance to open any doors. One break leading to another. Labels used to go out and look for talent. Now talent is fed to us every single day. From You Tube to Face Book or what ever it's in our face. So who has to go look for it. And why would anybody if they didn't have to go through some other company to get to something do that. People sometimes discuss a local artist from my town Ingrid Michaelson - http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&cd=9&ved=0CEsQtwIwCA&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.youtube.com%2Fwatch%3Fv%3DjJOzdLwvTHA&rct=j&q=ingrid%20michaelson&ei=SYvuTZKzE8SugQebhJWVDw&usg=AFQjCNEQd-xUaXcgbVDoq5BJkTAZ2AhSsw&cad=rja They say she did it herself, she wont sign with a major label even when offered. She did gigs, and My Space and Facebook and Twitter and this and that. She''s talented and she works hard! So I dig and find she had a song on a popular Old Navy commercial. there's the BREAK. See one break makes another break in this business. Her band is very good and ones a friend of mine. That's why people get crazy over trying to figure out or what to do in getting that ONE break. She wont sell out to a label but did a TV commercial. This is not fact, I'm just using it as an example of what it could be. So now she gets on the phone or her manager gets on the phone and calls one of the countless late night talk shows that are on seven nights a week three at a time and books the show to perform. They ask "Who are You" "What Have You Done" Part of the bid story here is the CMA! Being cool enough to pick up the phone and not say "Oh your not signed to a major label" "We can't have you" ! That is very cool.
But Bridgette Tatum had the hit, she had the in. So her being a performer on the CMA is a big deal no matter what, but not as BIG as if she didn't have one. It's a shock but not a shocker, a stretch and a good thing for all involved. Some of the others really skipped a step and did very well. One of the others later mentions: They hired Tom Baldrica, a former Sony music executive, as president, learned how the Nashville system of session players worked and started taking lunches with industry veterans. STILL it's about the hard work, doing more YOURSELF and not leaving it in the hands of others. As all did here. That's the key and the main point. Breaks - In stages Stages that include doing things past only your musical talents.

More power to them, if it brought them to the dance, but in my case ptting my music out there for free is not in the equation. Another example of music in general being de-valued. Maybe my way of thinking is antiquated.. So be it! I'm providing a service with my music that is costly for me to produce. If you want a service, YOU PAY FOR IT! {Damn me for being a capitalist!} Would you ask a farmer to toil in the fields all summer, then GIVE his crops away? I think not.

I have met Bridgette and heard her sing live. She is damn good - Don't forget that part! Check her Youtube for (I Like My) Cowboys Dirty.
Here is a story about Lyle Lovett and how his label worked out for him. It's a couple of years old. That's why Bridgette and Co are doing what they do.
"DETROIT - Lyle Lovett says he has "never made a dime" from album sales during his two-decade career, and hopes to rectify that situation when his contract expires. The eclectic country singer has two more albums on his deal with Curb/Universal, his home since 1985, and figures the horizons are wide open.
Lovett, 50, has sold 4.6 million albums in the United States since 1991, the year when SoundScan sales data were introduced. His most recent release, "It's Not Big It's Large," has sold about 145,000 copies since debuting at a career-best No. 18 on the Billboard 200 last September, according to Nielsen SoundScan.
"Records are very powerful promotional tools to go out and be able to play on the road, but you do have to think about it as a way of sustaining itself at some point. I'm very excited about being able to do some of that on my own, maybe," Lovett said.
He is currently touring North America with his Large Band through mid-August, and has also financed an album recorded at some of the singer/songwriter shows he does with John Hiatt, Guy Clark and Joe Ely but is having trouble getting his label interested in putting it out. "
