Hi Herbie:
Thanks for posting this article. I don't think anyone actually knows the impact of streaming. Seems like every day or so, somebody comes up with a new "wrinkle" on how to get music in the public's ears... and most of it seems to include a way to disenfranchise the songwriter(s). Apple's new "cloud" deal sounds like another bucket of worms. I suspect it will provide the songwriter with smaller benefits and only improve the bottom line of Apple, Steve Jobs, et al.

Well, I predict streaming will eventually be big business. If most music is digital it doesn't make sense to have to copy files back and forth from the laptop to the phone or tablet or whatever.
The problem is that streaming is still not big enough to replace the money we're used to getting from CD and download sales.
Whether or not it's a "nail in the coffin" depends on the individual economics. For musicians who want to pull down a living wage by selling nothing but music, or living off of royalties from a back catalog sales, it's probably a serious problem.

Like many things it all boils down to perspective. Someone who used to make money wont and somebody else now will.
At one time the rail road was the only way across the land so everyone involved with it was happy, Even the guys robbing it lol Times change, Automobiles and planes came, It still exists but.....
Certain things hit a perfect spot in time, lets say the music industry... For many not all of course it's a time frame where The Label is happy, the artist, the recording studio people are happy, The people who pressed vinyl were happy. People who only wrote songs were happy, Musicians were happy as they were still the focal point of music and popular music. The fans were happy.
That got to last a pretty long time, now things must change as they started to a ways back.. People who develop, make and sell computers are more involved with MUSIC more then anything mentioned above, Every single person who makes music uses a computer for some aspect of it. So now all involved in that world earn. Downloading, streaming it's part of that new enterprise.
Email should have or will have done away with letters mailed at the post office. Perhaps packages only.
I like to make a list in my mind and see how many things add up that's better for MORE people in a field. For music the OLD way wins, Computer people have there hands in EVERYTHING as it is already. As enjoyable and easy as it is I would rather downloading or streaming be outlawed all together. But that's not the American way of enterprise. So forget that lol
Somebody makes tons of money someone else is hurting.

Justice has had a couple hundred thousand streams of her songs in the last year. CD Baby has put her songs on about a dozen streaming services and we get a check each month - for her college trust fund.

Streaming audio will greatly reduce song theft. When it becomes easier and cheaper to legally obtain music than it is to steal it, the theft goes down. It can help indies, but there it is neither the answer nor the problem. The indie problem is radio. Once that gets cracked then things will even out...for a short while. As ever, adapt or die.
You've got to know your limitations. I don't know what your limitations are. I found out what mine were when I was twelve. I found out that there weren't too many limitations, if I did it my way. -Johnny Cash It's only music. -niteshift Mike Dunbar Music

You're right Mike, on the adapt or die front. Interesting article here about convergance of mainstream ( digital ) radio, and the internet.... http://james.cridland.net/blog/australias-austereo-worth-learning-from/Digital radio is going to be a huge boost to both developed acts and indies alike. The info that comes with the song can direct the "buyer" to the medium of choice. Wether it be a streaming service, free sevice via car radio or mobile device, or download, the convergance is already happening. cheers, niteshift PS - I have no relationship with Austereo, but have sent in a couple of tracks for consideration for their new digital radio platform, Radar. Ya gotta catch the lift when it's at the bottom, right ?
