JPF brothers and sisters:

Excuse me, I couldn't find a suitable Forum...so that is why i am posting here.

The animals in Japan need your help with donations and adoptions;

http://www.theanimalrescuesite.com

IF YOU DON'T HAVE MONEY...you just click on a selection of ads that will in turn give a animal a bowl of food. It would only take up your 5 minutes of your time.

They have the AASPCA ADS as well.

Thank you in advance for your help.

Petra

I like animals, most people do, that's what keeps Greenpeace in business. They and other groups like them use people's love for animals to keep themselves employed in well paying jobs. They place animals above people, I'm talking wild animals, not pets.

Wonderful post Petra! There are many animals there now that have lost their owners, it is very sad.
You are speaking about homeless pets...nothing wrong with that!! As long as a site is legit, nothing wrong with helping..

Another cool organization I have been a part of for several years is run by a young lady, still in her teens, I seen it on the ELLEN show...You go to her site, I go every day, if I can, as I get a reminder email. It takes me literally like 1 minute to answer one question about dogs and then one about cats, you learn something, and even if you get the question wrong, it donates 10 pieces of kibble to each animal, in shelters, and was doing it also to help the animals of Japan...Now 10 pieces may not seem like much but 10 pieces will feed a kitten...and they have donated as of this week 5 million meals to homeless pets...pretty impressive...and on Fridays, you can sign up to win a 50.00 certificate in your name to donate to your local shelter...

So either organization, is really cool...so if you don't want to dig in your pockets, you can answer the questions, it doesn't cost anything, but a min. of your time smile

check it out.

nice stuff Petra.

Petra, Hold on to your beliefs. Don't let the cynics and wise guys discourage you. You know, animals have more heart than some people. They at least don't laugh and make jokes about other people's misfortune. Stick to your guns.

Dan....

I love your support...well...remarks some have made...is nothing to what I have heard and seen in the building where I use to live. But negativity is a breeding ground for bigger things...just my belief.

Whilst I have every sympathy for all animals surely the plight of the many thousands of homeless people, injured folk and orphan kids comes first. Making the area safe and rebuilding is next.

Don't get me wrong, I like animals, God made them and they have a place in society, especially pets. What I don't like is groups that use the love that people have for animals, to play on that love to suck money out of them, all the while they paint people as barbarians if they kill an animal for food or to put food on the table of their families. This world would be overrun with animals if man didn't keep them in check. God made animals for man's use but not for abuse, there is a difference.

All kinds of help is needed in all kinds of areas. Not everyone can do everything. Pick the thing that you feel you can help the most at and do it the best you can.

The hard thing about all of this is compassion burn out. In Nashville last May we had a 500 year flood. Many areas are still recovering. If you look at the histories of Natural disasters, they actually happen all the time. It wasn't that long ago there was the Tsunami, Earthquakes, Tornados, Wildfires, Haiti, Austrailia, etc. It is simply impossible to keep up with all of it.

Then it seems like there is always something in our own neighborhoods, and not to mention our own families, lives, etc. Even people like Glyn here on this thread. Throw in so many things like that and then you have reports so often that billions of dollars in aid is wasted, stolen or never reach it's destination and it all adds up. It is just a bit much all the time. The difference as always is the Interenet and 24 hour television. We see it all the time immediately now.

I applaud anyone's desire to help their fellow man (and animals) but you have to keep in mind that people often are doing all they can just to keep up in the world. Nice to make the comments and try to help, but you can't blame people when they can't respond all the time.

To ALL:

I just wanted to say, we can't do everything for everybody, we have to pick our causes.

I for one have personally rescued cats in distressed and worked with two non-profit groups with rescue and adoption. It is a personal involvement with me.

Yes I have donated to salvation army and other causes and have settled in this area of pet rescue/adoption.

over 30,00 cats each year in Hamilton, Animal Control has put down because of people not taking responsibility ...not getting their cats spayed and neutered. And tons of people setting cats outside once they mature; as you know male cats spray their territory. The local animal control has finally in place almost nil to small fee for low income earners to get their pet spayed/neutered here. FINALALY smile Y, participate in public committee, then went to city councilors, to vote on and passed.

But no matter what if person or animal in immediate help, life threatening, I will jump in to help. If I saw a person in a car accident or someone lying on the road I would help...Just as I would see an animal in distress I would help...When the occasion arises I will pitch...like I did in the past.

This is not just about money...this is about empathy, feeling what they are going through.

Kodos To Kim for her posts...if people read it you will notice it asking of your time to give bowls of food for the pets as well as my link.

Hello, BOB,
Haven't run into you before, nice you dropped in.

Well never said people shouldn't come first, we all can't do everything, so there a lot of people helping the people in Japan, and others are just helping the owners get reunited with their dogs, or if pets lost owners need to be relocated and helped.

There's enough people in this world to take on and help out in each area...it is not always black and white Bob...

If you saw a dog that needed rescuing; wouldn't want to rescue it and have the empathy...and there are no people around to be rescued...AT THE TIME....THERE ARE ALL KINDS OF SITUATIONS you have to exaim here.

Life is complicated, hope I cleared things up.

Sorry we don't need to get personal here Bob....

bye bye for now

There was a great little story on NPR about a dog that stood by his friend-dog who was hurt and could not move.

Tom,

In the building where I live, a lady told me this story, as I recall she said the dog had his front leg around the other injured dog and stayed by his side; still a man and motorcycle came to rescue them...unbelievable...the love between animals...

Tom thanks for reminding me of this story.

Much appreciated!!

While I truly DO feel for the poor animals involved here (Hey, THEY don't build atomic power stations in Tsunami Zones..it's People who Do) I prefer to help One of Our Own..Glyn..who is in-need..since I've limited funds/I also am more inclined to think Each Country COULD help its victims of Whatever on a Larger Scale..IF they had the inclination. (EVERYBODY expects Generous Ol' Uncle Sam to send Millions To The Rescue..don't they now?)

Guess I WILL visit Mz Kim's Freekibble site suggestion to ease my conscience a wee-bit..though I'm sure the eventual Guilt Trip may well result in a Donation so I can reclaim a few of those "Minutes-a-Day" down the pike. (We've already given-home to a homeless kitten..resulting in a bill for neutering him when the furniture was gettin'-sprayed..as he matured.) The vet trimmed off the tip of his ear (So animal control people know he's a "Free-Range" Kitty, & won't pick him up & haul him away..if he's "nabbed" wandering in our yard or the neighbor's.)

So..on my Small Scale..My Conscience is Clear/I continue to love both People & Animals..on a small budget, alas, but..they're loved.

Thanks for launchin' this Conscience Examinin' Thread, Mz Petra..& thanks, too, Mz Kim (et al!)

Get Kurt Fortmeyer to play his song "My dog Jesus." Which I subconciously lifted for my song, "Lucky."

Bob, we are not animal wierdos...

I feel horrible about the people. I have cried more times than I can count over this horrible tragedy every time I see the news.

I give to both causes, when I can, but here is one thing I think about, people have the ability to help themselves, in such ways as reading pamplets and finding out by media or signs, where there is fresh food and water, and help, a lost pet does not. So I feel they could also use a little compassion, we are not saying they are better than people or deserve it more, just pointing out the additional need. That is all.

I don't normally do stuff like this but I did do this Petra. Not because of any special affinity for animals (like yourself) but because it didn't hurt me to do it. I can all go on and on about animal needs vs. people needs and talk about the Nashville floods, the Georgia floods, the California fires, the California earthquakes, the Haiti earthquake, Biloxi after Katrina, New Orleans after Katrina, the mistreatment of Christians in the middle east, the mistreatment of homosexuals in America, the excesses of the wealthy and the oppression of the poor, and so on and so on and so on and so on. This time I just decided to click the ads. Like Petra said, it took less than five minutes I think, even when I left them up for about a minute each.

I’ve been tempted to reply to this issue from the day it was posted Petra. Though not knowing exactly where to take a stand.

Being vegetarian most of my life and just recently turning carnivorous (actually omnivorous) for health reasons (see my “Migraine” thread); I’m not quite at terms with attaching ethics to animal rights. At least not generally speaking.

The reality being that we’re all animals of this Earth (some carnivorous, some vegetarian, some both). Grant you, our cognizant thinking distinguishes us in the Animal Kingdom, but we’re still animal. It begs the question; should intelligence be the deciding factor in the worthiness of dispensing aid and compassion? Maybe our gift of intelligence renders us responsible for the care and compassion of all God’s creatures.

Pets, e.g., dogs, cats, guinea pigs, etc, is a no brainer. Of course my heart goes out to all these pets that have been treated cruelly and suffer pain and misery for any reason anywhere. I have no respect for humans that abuse pets or fail to give them proper care. They’re criminals!

If my little dog, Dagny, was in such a heartbreaking situation as in Japan, I would hope and pray she would find compassionate humans to come to her aid. That being said, maybe the most practical way to aid these pets of Japan is by aiding their keepers, i.e., the human animals of Japan. I think the good people of Japan will take care of these pets if able. That is why I’ve decided to funnel all my donations to the human victims of this catastrophe - and let the on-the-ground organizations decide the best way to spend the donations. This decision does not cater to intellectual worthiness (which can be questionable in humans), or not because of being one-of-my-own-kind, or not because all humans are better than all animals (they’re not), but because it’s a practical way to help all animals concerned.

The issue of all animal rights ( the un-pets) isn’t as easy for me to formulate an ethical stance. I believe, by design, we were meant to be meat eaters. Whether we were suppose to rise above this primitive instinct or we’re locked into it I can’t answer.

One thing I am sure of is an animal’s suffering and pain is very upsetting to me (all animals included). I remember on one occasion (though there have been other occasions) I came across a groundhog that was hit by a truck traveling in front of me. The truck kept going as if nothing happened.

I stopped and noticed the groundhog’s back legs and rump were crushed to the road. He was still alive, though visibly in misery. I got a tire iron out of my trunk and put him out of his misery (then dragged him off the road). A car behind watched. Then a woman got out of the car screaming at me for being so cruel. I wondered what the woman would have done in that situation. I couldn’t bear leaving that poor creature in agony. I’ve done this on several occasions, but never was screamed at before.

Okay, the big wind had his say.

Yes, my heart goes out to the pet victims of Japan’s heartbreaking situation. I just think it may be wiser to donate to the human survivors that will in turn, hopefully take care of the surviving pets.

Petra, hang in there....... I too am an animal lover.

I'm not a vegetarian, though I've thought about it, I can't figure that one out quite - much less torture my large family with trying to wrap my brain around the nutrition issues while I/we transitioned -- just too much going on in my life to make that sort of a focus shift right now. Maybe at some point. But I do care where it comes from, and wish I could do more (financially) resource-wise to make sure what I do buy has been well-cared for and gently raised. I am sure most of what I do eat, is most likely not.

John, above, I hear what you're saying re: the groundhog; my solution in that circumstance would be phoning Animal Control or see what gloves & equipment I may have in my car to take it safely (without further harm to it or me) to a vet to be put down.
That's me though.

I helped a turtle across the street once. Pulled over and carried it to the other side - I was just sure it was going to get hit. It peed on me. smile Some thanks - but I'm sure I must've scared it, saving it.

I do hope the food gets to the rescued animals -- I hear those who are saying help the people first, and I've been promoting links on my Facebook to organizations that DO funnel every penny to assistance and none to overhead, for this cause, myself.

But something does need to be done for those who cannot help themselves, who have no voice.

Petra, you might like Brian May's Save-Me Forum too. smile
(don't have the link in front of me - search Save Me on Facebook, or Google) It's a good site - all about helping animals live a decent life and saving them from things humans can prevent them from suffering.

I really like & appreciate what Brian has to say, which echoes what Kim and a couple others have said here, that every species, every animal, placed here has the right to live on this planet. Without being used to extortion or excess or destroyed for sport without need. I know others will disagree with me on that, but that's how I feel about it.

Best wishes to all who are suffering in Japan - and everywhere - man or animal.

I loved your response to Bob. You clearly made it for folks out there to see the need to help pets in Japan.

Petra,

Last week I was talking to a friend of mine who just got back from Japan. He is on an emergency team and goes to all the world hot spots in disaster areas. he has been to Mexico, Hati, Australia, anywhere there is something really bad, he and his team are there.

He was in Nashville because they have cleaned out a lot of the emergency people due to radiation dangers. They can't even get close to a lot of the sites, which are why there are still people missing over there.

So unfortunatly I think it will be a while before the work you are trying to do can take effect. I would suggest working within the Humane society or someone experienced with that kind of charity.

The problem with all of these things are the opportunty for fraud. Everytime something like this happens, there are hundreds of people out there willing to find ways to rip people off. One of the things we have seen consistantly out of world disasters are billions of dollars, food, supplies, that never got to where it was supposed to go. And people have just wasted money they couldn't afford to lose in the first place. It is why I am always very careful what I contribute too.

Personally I would rather see us take care of our own, like Glyna who is going through difficulties due to Cancer. That way you know where the money goes and the good it might do.

I try to be very compassionate, but I don't think we have the ability to save the world. I think we should look closer first.

Marc,

We all have to make our judgement on this matter - it is a personal decision.

Yes there is alot of fraud going on for example recently a young woman in Toronto had claimed she had cancer. She shaved her head and placed a scarf on. She was just asking for donations and did receive a quite a bit amount. She did this on her own, no agency.
Well Lord and behold she was faking it! She was charged.

Best is to check out and research where you plan to donate. I would not donate to someone asking for money straight out/ one on one.

I already help out in two non-profit groups.

The two links on this site are well respected and have been around for a while for some time.

The America Animal SPCA I am sure everyone knows. They are involved in this cause.

Marc the only way is audit their books, to see where all the money goes...and only the government can do that; here anyways.

Re: Skin Canacer- my dad has it and my mother last year went under surgery for cancer of the uterus. And has to be checked every 6 months to see if it has come back

My grandmother past away because of cancer and Myself had a scare back in 2000. Got to get tested again because of symptoms I have.

I am sorry to hear about your Health Care system..Everyone should have Health Coverage...we talk about your system here a lot.

But even here not all is covered if it is a new treatment/controversial or if you need certain type of treamment you may have to wait 6 months to a year. One lady mortaged her house to get immediate treatment in the states. If she would of waited she would of died.

Not all New medications/drugs are not covered...got to go across the border..so all is not perfect here either but I am grateful for what we have.

Petra,

Actually more of my personal experience are with people coming here from countries like Canada, Greece and England who couldn't get help for their problems. Everyone here does have health care it is who is able to pay for it that is more the issue. We don't really have people dying in the streets and the comments from around the world about how bad our health care are vastly overrated. If you know anyone in the medical field you might want to ask them about it before you believe a lot of that.

Like I have said before, a lot you read on the Internet is totally bogus. Much different when you are here.

Fraud is an enormous problem and it has no borders. On anything you donate to you should excercise caution and don't go diving into anything too quickly. That is how people get burned.

My informations is from our Politicians, the news from your networks, your own Politicians on the news, and Friends that live in Florida. This information have not been from the internet. Plus Documentaries.

I should of been more clear as I was addressing the fact you have to pay for your healthcare out of your own pocket( here it is paid by the government (called OHIP, everyone one has a Health Card and has to be updated every 5 years...this covers your doctor visits,emergencie/regular surgeries to the Hospital, and treaments)

Petra,

I understand that. That is why a lot of that is wrong. Everyone has their own agenda and it finds it's way into everything. Mine comes more for personal experience. What I do for a living is deal with writers, artists and interested parties from almost every class, income division, countries, cities, towns, and villages from pretty much everywhere you can imagine. People like those on these pages are pretty much my regular clientel for many years.

The problem with most Health care such as the Canadian system are many waiting lists and other things that many don't see. Those are the ones I have had personal dealings with. One of my clients nearly died waiting years to see a doctor and had to come to Minnesota to have her conditioned diagnosed and get treatment. She would have died if she waited much longer. on every trip I have ever made to or from Canada, I have been surrounded on every flight, in every airport by people coming to the US for treatments of some kind. they talk about it in line. have oxygen tanks, pamphlets on American hospitals, are on the phone obviously to Doctors because they are talking louder than they should and then of course there are the obvious looks of cancer patients, the jaundice skin, bandanas, wearing of hospital sweats, and other pretty obvious signs of sickness.

I have been involved with doctors and nurses in many capacities, (some I don't really want to go into here, LOL!) who have related their particular circumstances of treating indigent people, people in emergencies, people who can't afford treatment. In America, by law, no one can be turned down for health care.

Other people I know in health care in other countries, particularly England where the daughter of one of my best friends "Used to be" a nurse, recants horror stories of people actually dying in the halls and in the streets. (That is why she is not a nurse anymore)

So I think there are probably horror stories everywhere and I am sure there are those here as well. I have always paid for my own health insurance and yes, I have paid out of pocket on some expenses. But it is only fair as it is MY Health care, not someone else's.

On the subject that you started this post on, saving animals in Japan, I do applaud your goals. Pretty much any musician has a long standing history of helping out causes, doing benefits, using their talents to alieve suffering in many places. Mine goes back to the "We Are The World" days of USA for Africa in 1984 where a majority of the food and relief supplies rotted on the docks because of the Civil war that was starving people in the first place.

Over the years I have done many many fundraisers and participated in pretty much every Natural disaster and emergency in the past 25 years. I believe I have given mine and other people's fair share.I have no problem with it.

But I am realistic about the chances to help others. Over the past six or so years, I have relagated to helping people in my areas. Last year Nashville had enormous floods of which almost no press attention was given. Many that I know were washed away financially, and emotionally wrecked. So we did our best to help them. That is my policy now. I help those that I can, pray for the rest and take care of myself.

I do understand and applaud your efforts to stand up for what you believe in. That is the better angles of human nature and what separates us from the other animals on the planet. We do make messes, but we clean them up. We do have suffering, but most of us endevor to allieviate it.

Do what you can and positively affect the lives of others.
In the end that is all you can do.

MAB

Marc: In the last couple of years I've had the dubious pleasure of paying not only exorbitant premiums for my family's healthcare, but also every healthcare expense up to the deductible. All because I am no longer covered by an employee plan, since I am "self-employed". In the last two years, the expenses of these "premiums" have exceeded 25% of my regretably low income. In the meantime, I can read in the Wall Street Journal a story of a spine surgeon who operated on one patient seven different times! And his avarice is not an exception. Turn on the TV, and you will find all sorts of drug companies touting their stuff, telling you to "ask your doctor if this is right for you". Why? Is your doctor stupid? Or does he get a kickback when he puts you on the drug? There is actually a new bill before congress that would mandate that the public sees how much and how often Medicare is charged by the medical community. This is information that the AMA and a whole lot of vested interests would prefer to be kept private.
Why is it that no doctor and no hospital posts their rates for various procedures? Until after the fact?

Otto,

It is outrageous to hear you have to pay that amount of money for Health Insurance.25%!

They must be getting a kickback. You guys need a revamping of your HealthCare, where all people are covered. (they must have money in their budgets).

Petra
Hope your cats are doing well.

Ott, add that to you income tax rate and you'd be up at a rate of a million dollar income earner in Canada.

Marc. Where health care in the US is a profit driven business, you do have access to the latest inventions there is. Build it and they will come as long as they have the money to pay for it. As I have said before, you have the best and fastest health care system THAT MONEY CAN BUY. But not all have access to it. In Canada we have FREE coverage to a good system(though not perfect) and everyone has access to it. The free access sometimes slows the systen down, as some people go to the doctor for a hangnail or a bellyache. Yes, sometimes we have to wait a while for some procedures that may be instant in a profit driven US,but in Canada, if it is urgent or life threatening, you move to the top of the line on the wait list. Your system is best for the rich, ours is best for the not so rich.

Thank you for your post...this is wanted I wanted to get across, but didn't do such a great job of explaining it.

My avatar is a pic of a female cat I found last year outsite my old building..people didn't care, walking by it each morning...her tail was bleeding, hair cut off..look like it got caught in car's wheel...so I bandaged it up and called an non-porfit I have dealt with in the past and we brought it the vet and was able to save her life, the tail was cut, and was nursed back to good health.. she was adopted shortly after. She has really filled out and is doing really well. I put some of my own money towards the vet.

If anyone is looking for a pet...largest two sites are -

http://www.petfinder.com

http://adoptapet.com

type in your location and type of pet...works all over North America...from rescue animal shelters.

The other one I resuced was Shadowee, a grey young female kitten..fostered it for 2 weeks...again..the same group took her on and found a home for it.

Petra

One of my cats, Dean, I rescued in the winter of 2001 it was -23 below , frezzing..no one claimed it as per usual...people throw out cats all the time...dogs too.

Pets remember traumatic events..everytime I leave my apartment Dean crys his head off.

Enough of my ramblings.
