Hey Stevie: Happy belated birthday buddy  Nice one! Great story telling here and I love the punchline of the singer's little joke. Also very effective how you slowed down and sped up in the last part of the song. If I have one minor nit it would be the use of the word "genetic". Introduces a little bit of a clinical feel there for me - and not really needed since you point out that it was the same disease that struck her mother. That's an awfully small thing - certainly didn't impact my enjoyment of the song - which I think is outstanding. Great idea to record on your birthday - makes it easier to remember when you did what. What a great story (and delivery), StevieB. The only line I tripped over was the one Scott mentioned. It does sound clinical and at odds with the mood. Perhaps say "The same disease that took her mother's life". Donna

Let me say that I really like this one a lot. It reminds me of a Traveling Wilbury song called "Last NIght." The groove is really great and moves the song along well and made me listen twice. I love the melody of the chorus a lot too and the lyrics are cute (if that is an ok word?) If you are looking for suggestions, I would suggest compacting it a bit by cutting back on some words and lines so the listener can hang onto some of your phrases and then hit the chorus. I think it has potential to be a killer song! Really great Stevie! This is one of my favorites of yours.

I too like the story and the musical treatment. I didn't time it out but it feels a bit long. Of course story songs can get away with that as long as you keep the audience interested. It does feel a little wordy but overall I think this one works well.

What a great song!
Like others I thought the word "generic" stuck out. You could substitute
She became ill in the winter time
With the very disease that took her mother's life.
Also, on the word "Ives" in "Burl Ives," (which, by the way, is a spectacular play on words), I would sing the five note of scale and hold it (like you did, but on the 2 note). To me the five note makes for a little more dramatic pause. But that's just me.

Hey little_elton_j, Wow, what a great story! It's sort of a musical twist on the classic movie "Harold and Maude" . Anyhoo, both from a lyrical and perfomance standpoint, you really sold this one for me. Yeah, not a big fan of the word "genetic", but I think you've been given some good alternatives for it. As for it being a bit lengthy, you know I'm not in a position to cast stones in that department, so I say leave it alone . So all in all, a great production to commemorate YOUR arrival 54 years ago. Burl Ives comes from a little crossroads (you can't call it a town) near where I grew up in Illinois. Just throwin' that in.
I loved the story - it has real heart and is strange enough to be believable. Great job.

Wow Stevie....you had me hanging on every line in this story, and the burlesque/BurlIves line was a classic. I was howling...

I like this one alot.
Music fits well and I enjoyed they way you ended on that last chord...I expected it to resolve lower.
I agree with most of your sugs..perhaps "subsequent" could be replaced. Just felt a little awkward to me.
Minor nits though on a great storytelling piece.
It is one of my favs of yours.

Stevie, Now this is a really great story song. Great images right from the start. Great lines. Burlesque and Burl Ives made ME laugh. I like you kid, you're funny. Ain't it amazing what we can discover under all the dusty papers in the drawers? I'm writing this as I listen. And what an ending. This is truly a classic. It ranks up there with the best of Steve Goodman, Harry Chapin, John Prine and yes, Burl Ives. Great, great song.

Good Luck & "KUDOS" on this one, Amigo...very well-told tale/Burl Ives is an old Favorite I grew up with..(Remember "Little Black Duck?") One Fan Collector was from Cleveland..I asked him if the old Roxy Burlexque Theater was still running..& alas..it's closed down. (Us college kids'd head up there on dull weekends & yell "put it ON" to some of the newer gals there...)

Sorry I've been MIA lately..went to an Annual Fan Collector's Gathering in Sarasota a Weekend Ago..bought 17 Fans..to sell..& have been busy restoring 'em ever-since. 2 to go..& I'll get back to Songwriting again.

One Fan Collector was from Cleveland..I asked him if the old Roxy Burlexque Theater was still running..& alas..it's closed down. (Us college kids'd head up there on dull weekends & yell "put it ON" to some of the newer gals there...)

I've had the chorus melody and most of the verse lyrics for some time but never had anything I liked as melody for the verses till now so I've never recorded it in all this time. Glad you enjoyed it. This song grew on me Stevie...I've listened a few times over several days. First I thought it was a little long but now maybe I'm thinking you need the extra time there...It's a sad song to me and a different type of song....I enjoyed the story.

I played this for my wife last night, for those us that know me also known as the toughest critic on earth...she loved it too, what's not to love about it. Great writing, vocals music, delivery. Forgot to say yesterday this is one of those I wish I'd written that kind of songs for me.
