During my quiet time this morning I thought about things in my past (as I tend to do during Holidays). Back on simpler times. It got me thinking about "comfort food" and things my Grandmother used to fix us. My favorite Winter food was "Breakfast for Dinner". Every once and a while on cold evenings she would cook these thick pancakes in an old black cast iron skillet. She liked to cook them a little on the "brown" side. I loved the little "crispys" (the little bits of batter the broke off the pancakes) because they would even get browner. She always saved those for me. She served the pancakes with real butter, Steen's Pure Cane Syrup (a really dark, strong taste) and sausage patties. I can close my eyes and almost smell it. Well I'm determined to treat myself to this favorite meal from long ago. My comfort food.
Thought it would be interesting to hear from others from different places and experiences. What's your comfort food? Think about it and if you wish let us know. And best of all treat yourself to it this Holiday Season.
Mark

If you're talking about "winter food", a fond memory I have was when as a young girl my mom would make a nice bowl of cream of wheat on the stove w/milk of course. It was especially memorable when she made it on a snow day where we'd have off from school because she knew I'd be out playing for a long time and that stuff stuck to your gut like glue. I'd only have to refuel at lunch and not before. Think it's also good for you because it has alot of iron in it. Moms are great!!! (so were snow days)

left over spaghetti, fried with a little butter, a couple of eggs cracked over top - then with a little melted cheese for the final touch - had some for breakfast after reading your post
Thanks for the inspiration

My homemade chicken noodle soup (noodles from scratch) and homemade bread (from scratch...no bread machine). I also like a casserole my grandmother used to make, ground beef crumbled in the bottom of a casserole dish, then a layer of sweet onions, then a layer of diced potatoes, topped with cream of mushroom soup, garlic salt and pepper. Cover and bake one and 1/4 hours at 350 degrees.
My other grandmother made ground sirloin patties, which contained minced onion, bread crumbs, salt and pepper. She dredged them in flour, browned them, and baked them in a roasting pan with a little bit of water in the bottom for about 45 minutes at 350 degrees. Made gravy from the pan drippings and served with mashed potatoes. She also made an awesome beef noodle soup!

Wow, Orloff:
Cream of Wheat. Those were the days. Does anyone remember the "Cream of Wheat" song they'd play as they sponsored children's radio programs back in WWII and later? We'd dance around the kitchen while Mom prepared that magic stuff.
Llarupin' good! I think the name of the show was "Let's Pretend." Strange, the things old geezers remember... mostly trivial but still in the realm of fond memories. Thanks for mentioning it, Lynn... and thanks Mark, for bringing this thread up. Polly's favorites are also pretty near the top of my list. Just about any kind of home-made bread will get my attention. Dang, now I'm hungry and I just finished breakfast... LOL!
Merry Christmas, guys and gals!

Chicken and Dumplings.
There is no better comfort food in the world than Dumplings.
These days I have had to learn to make Gluten free dumplings. It's a challenge. But I think I have it figured out.

Hey Bill:
Exactly which direction is Curmdgeonville from Smyrna? I'd like to sample those Gluten free dumplings... and pet that old tabby cat you're holding. Merry Christmas, Bud.

Every Christmas my mom naturally would cook big dinners. My cousin loved her oyster dressing and giblet gravy. My brother loved her potato salad. I liked her cakes. There are two that I remember - - a chocolate cake and a regular cake with orange icing.
Somewhere in all her papers I found the recipe to the chocolate cake. The icing was a liquid chocolate mixture than hardens into a sort of fudge type thing. I tasted like fudge but wasn't as thick. It would drip down and harden around the bottom of the plate and be deep enough to run you finger through the icing. I didn't care about the cake so much. I'd eat the icing and make people mad.
The orange cake was just a regular cake but the icing was an orange marmalade stuff. That was one moist cake. It would soak in the cake and man, it was good. I loved this cake but not as much as that chocolate icing! .

MMMMM definitely makes me hungry. I'm a sucker for good dumplings as well. Got a true story on bad dumplings. My aunt, God rest her soul, couldn't cook to save her life. Uncle tells story of the first meal she ever cooked after they got married. He came home from work and smelled something cooking. Lifted the lid and said "ah Honey you made dumplings.....". To which see started crying and said "that's not dumplings, it's gravy!" LOL we still laugh about it

Christmas cookies. Some half-baked relative owned a bakery, so the ladies in the extended family would bake for the holidays for them. I remember my mother and sisters would start right after Thankgiving baking all kinds of cookies. They would fill 5 gal. tins with different kinds. I would get to help decorate the easy ones. Everyday right up until the week before Christmas. Unfortunately, I can't stand Christmas cookies anymore, but love the aromas.
