A tradition that was almost passed down through generations,

coffee soup when I was just a lad,
his snack digested dentureless,
that never tasted bad.
He broke up saltine crackers,
in a large bowl almost full,
then poured in sweetened coffee,
that was steaming hot, not cool.
Perhaps learned as a hobo
when he used to ride the rails,
seeking work during the depression,
mixed in old tin pots or pails.
Coffee soup
hot tan goop,
that Grandpa
made me eat,
I'd rather gulp
down candy bars,
but that was
not to be,
All the crackers
swelled up giant sized
each form
a sodden mass,
then he'd slurp it down
with ooos and ahhs,
assured that it would pass.
It never was a gourmet feast,
but its flavor was unique
some ancient mix he'd handed down,
that he ate three times a week.
Coffee soup

grandpap was right
he was old and rather wise,
Coffee has anti-oxidants
it's a truly liquid prize,
He swore that it could cure

poor right now,
I think I'll have a cup...

I was eighteen,
then suddenly lost my taste
for coffee soup, that chewy goop,
a caffeine infused paste.
But it can be addictive,
he slurped it till he died,
then Grandma washed his coffee bowl,
and dried it as she cried.
It's something everyone should try,
it tastes quite good you see,
so make a bowl, but tell no soul,

Luckily you vocals don't, cool tune aswell. You've got a good voice but you lyric writing is of the scale. Great job man.

Your songs remind me of stuff that John Hartford might write and do. It is different, but different is good. You are certainly prolific.

Aye, they were hard times, them. We used to scrape the top of the burnt toast into a mug of hot water if we wanted a cup of tea.
Nice song. And a good voice you've got there.
Not great quality listening to it on YouTube. It would be better on an audio-orientated website like SoundClick, SoundCloud, ReverbNation, etc.

I loooooove coffee songs. I agree with Andy. You do have a good voice.
Apparently lots of people ate coffee soup. Usually milk or cream is involved too. It's like dipping donuts into coffee.
A suggestion for you:
"some ancient mix he'd handed down,"
Perhaps it could read " some ancient mix __ handed down."
You could hold out the mix a little longer when you sing it to make up for the lost beat of "he'd"
Interesting song. For those familiar with coffee soup, it is a bit of light hearted nostalgia. It's not a knee-slapper but it's cute. Coffee lovers would be attracted to this song and, who knows, maybe there will be a cooking show that wants to feature a coffee soup recipe or depression era recipes and may want a song to go along with it.
I liked how you had Grandma weeping as she cleaned his bowl. It gives us a glimpse into their relationship, obviously one that was loving. (Either that or she hated cleaning the bowl, lol.)
Very enjoyable.

What an great lyric!! Well-written, but what I expect when I read your songs!!
My 9 year old heard this playing and he is singing it, he thinks it is great. He hates my singing, but he's sitting in the bathroom singing "coffee soup"...not sure how you want to take that....but for him, that's a thumbs up...
Ummm, he's out of the bathroom and just asked me to play it again...

Thanks, Andy, Kevin, Steve, Roy, Jean, Tam and Paul This is actually a true life story, and I still have coffee soup once in whiole when I want to remember my granddad. thanks for all you kind comments as always. ~~~MFB III
P.S.-Tam, as odd as it seems this would make a great childrens song, cause it has a lot of the elements kids enjoy. Some strange goopy thing, that you have to eat, just cause an adult says so. LOL~~~MFB III

Wow, I have become the great motivator for a young lad, to learn...perhaps I should play it for my sixteen year old whose spurned, all the knowledge that he once yearned. I am glad that a child can find the humor in this song, I was a child when it became a tiny seed in the back of my brain, engrained, and now another child ponders the wonders of the goop I once thought
