Thats was cool Scott. I liked the guitar runs in the chorus, and the harp as well! When the heck did you get Schadenfreude from? Interesting name to say the least!

Awesome production, instrumentation, and arrangement. Very clever lyric, loved the phrasing and melody in the chorus. It had a bit of a throwback vibe, but I'm not completely sure to what era. Very enjoyable! In my head, Schadenfreude looks like Heidi Klum, so I think I'll listen again...

Todd Hey Todd It's an actual word - though not a common one. It's the feeling of taking pleasure at someone else's bad fortune. Wasn't sure if it would work or not making it a proper name - but I ran with it anyway... Glad you thought it was cool! Scott

All my stuff has a retro feel to it - it's the music I've always liked and I just do it for fun so I haven't felt the need to do otherwise. My wife watches one of those fashion designer shows that Heidi Klum hosts. She would be perfect for the video! Scott

Hey Scott,
just took a look in a dictionary. Schadenfreude is one of those rare German words that found its way in your language...like Kindergarten, Waldsterben, Gestalt etc. Funny that someone imagines Heidi Klum as Schadenfreude...She's more Kindergarten... :-)
Thumbs up for your song. Cheers, Bernd

Hi Scott...are you a not-too-distant cousin of Warren Zevon...or Randy Newman? or Freud(e) himself? What a fun and clever song. Just what I needed after getting a little misty listening to Glen's "No Easy Road."
Schadenfreude, indeed!
Best, Scott

The overall vibe and groove of this thing is absolutely fantastic Scott.
Personally I almost never like 'h' slurs... ("sigh-hide" Clue-who). There's very few times that they seem musical to me, and they don't really work here... Albeit, this is really personal opinion I realize.
The big nit I have about this tune is there's no story... Schadenfreude is bad luck but the only example you have is burning toast. IMO you need to paint the picture better... we need some detailed examples of the bad things that have happened. IE, just telling us that bad things happen around her isn't very compelling... Some broken bones or car wrecks or lost jobs or Grandmothers dying... IMO, that's where you need to go with this lyric.
Sorry.
But like I said, the music on this is A+. The groove and listenability of this is bordering on pro. I love the music a lot.
Peace,
Ian

I'm impressed at how clean you play your notes on a harp. !! - good stuff - jm Funny thing about the pronunciation, Joice. I have always said it without the "duh" at the end. Then I thought that I should check it before I used it in a song. Sadly, the correct pronunciation left me a little up the creek with rhyme possibilities. As for the harp - Thanks. When I bought my first Marine Band harmonica in 1975 or so, it came with some instructions. One of the things I learned from them is that you can cover the holes you don't want played with your tongue. Been doing that ever since - makes it a lot easier (once you get used to it) to blow a single note Glad you liked this. Scott

I'd listen to your songs just for the harp. Very clever premise. The whole production is really great and the chorus is a catchy as hell covered in super glue.

Thumbs up for your song. Cheers, Bernd Thanks Bernd, for this and the earlier comment. One of the things I find most interesting is that we didn't have a word for the concept in English. Just as well though - the German word actually has the right sound to go with the concept. Ah, maybe you're right about Heidi. It's just that she sometimes looks so happy when one of the designers on her show is getting slammed. Glad you liked it! Scott

Peace,
Ian Hey Ian: Glad the music worked for you. I should probably change the "toast" line. I had in mind that "burn the toast" would be generalized as "when you screw up". I guess it probably doesn't work that way though. I wanted to use "screw the pooch" instead - but couldn't come up with a suitable rhyme with pooch. As for the verse lyrics - sorry they don't work for you but they pretty much came out as I wanted. They provide a lot less detail than I normally would want but that was by conscious design - though that doesn't mean I'm infallible. The idea might be a little pretentious - I had in mind that the listener would know the meaning of the word schadenfreude and would immediately home in on what was going on - thus being in on the game when the singer wasn't. A tough thing to pull off, maybe - and the word isn't common enough that most would catch it. Still, a fun experiment... Scott

Hi Scott,
Well I had no idea Schadenfreude was just a word and not a gal….lol….seems like it deserves more…and you’ve given it that little special something! You put an interesting spin on it…makes it fun to listen to! I like the rhymes too.
Enjoyed it!

I didn't know coming in that it meant what it means either. But what a fun ride! Really enjoyed the listen and the story.
I'm a little with Ian on broken bones or cars or things really going to pot, lost a job, cut yourself on a busted bottle or something to refer to personal injuries, stuff like that could turn up the humor a notch.
But it's cool as it stands too.
Nice to see you again, I've been away! Still writing that blasted book.

Hey Bud, ............ What a fun song ! That one definetly gets downloaded into the JPF file. Oh man, after listening to your songs for a couple of years, I'd swear you've been smoking too many Cuban cigars, and drinking too much Scotch. Your voice, now, is just, diiiiiiirty...... Play it again Sam, it's great mate, just aggressive and defiant, and waaaaay out there. Nice one. cheers, niteshift PS - go back, and bring up the vocal. It's a little buried. Out front would be better. Don't worry, we all know you're some two bit looser, in the lounge bar at 3 A.M. I'll wait for the remix.

Wow, that´s funny, cool music, superb melody . Thumps up!! Actually, I know you English speakin uys over there are using the word Schadenfreude. So, the only thing is (what you could improve) is the pronounciation of "Schadenfreude" but yours was OK
" little christmas spirit please, I´ll take mine of the rocks"

Martin, IMO there is nothing wrong with the pronounciation. The 'r' does not sound German, but a German 'r' would not support the flow of the lyrics IMO. Like e.g. when we say words like "computer" in German - we pronounce it as if it was a German word (which it has indeed become).

I can't remember the connection I originally heard it in - I probably just assumed that because I've heard something, most others have as well Thanks for the data point..... I set aside some time tomorrow to work on that track... Later, Scott

Cool to get a thumbs up, Nite. Thanks Yeah, I've been playing this in the truck and came to the same conclusion about the vocal. I'm on it Been fighting off a cold lately - probably has contributed to the vocal effect some Scott

Wow, that´s funny, cool music, superb melody . Thumps up!! Actually, I know you English speakin uys over there are using the word Schadenfreude. So, the only thing is (what you could improve) is the pronounciation of "Schadenfreude" but yours was OK Thanks Martin Yeah, that's the closest I'm going to get without a German accent or phrasing ability. Thanks for the thumbs up! Scott

Love the gravelly voice and of course the gold panning out in the music, it almost has a Sinatra or Armstrong feel to it, i couldhear either one of them singing it. lovely work scott.~~~~ MFB III
