I took some time last week to have a little fun for a quick rough and dirty demo of a Lady Gaga song. So I video taped the process and put it up on YouTube. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qif5B-s5ggIEnjoy!

Awesome job, Jody. I won't comment on the implications of being able to hold the camera while urinating. j/k

Thanks, glad y'all liked it. I'm now getting people asking me to do others in a similar fashion. So I'm thinking about some others I could do when I get the time.

OMG...I loved this!!!! I just got her Fame Monster CD for my birthday Monday..Love her stuff.. You are so very talented..fantastic vocals man!! I would give up my first born to work with you on my lyrics..oops..did I say that?
I almost died when you sang vertical stick...that is too funny!! and the d**k part..With you singing it, hilarious.
It was cool, seeing your dog..did he help with the drums or not?
This was great fun...and I have to show it to my youngest son who is 22, and bought me the cd...he will get a kick out of this.
You are very talented. One of the best vocals I have heard on this site..and there are many I dig on here.
Keep up the music, and the fine videos...

Thank you Kimberly. Much appreciated. Actually with the little research I did on the song, she actually sings Vertigo Schtick. Which is why I put that in the video with those lyrics. Apparently she wrote that part of the verse about the infamous director Hitchcock - using references to several of his movies.
I did change some of the words to make it fit a bit for a guy. :-)
Not sure what I could do with helping you on your lyrics though. I think JPF has a great forum for that with the lyric boards, if that's what you're referring to.
Glad ya liked!
That's funny John. You know it's gotta be good when people view it more than once. I guess the best thing would be to pass it on to your friends and hope they find it funny too. :-)
p.s. - Dorian didn't help with the drums. He's still a puppy and hasn't learned to drum yet.

I'm not knocking Lady Gaga, she's got some talent to write some really hooky stuff.
Dorian is great, I don't think anyone that has met him hasn't liked him. Even people that don't normally like dogs like him. He's great.
Yeah, I debated on dressing weird for the video, but I don't really have the wardrobe she has. :-)

Hi --Oh...so it is schtick?...I looked up on one lyric site (and it used stick, so that is why I said stick... because I was not sure..but that is cool to know she was refering to Hitchcock...some may think she just writes pop songs, but she has loads of ideas behind her thoughts and lots of double meanings.. The helping on my songs, I meant, to sing one, put music with it...:) Not that I can't always use help making my lyrics better.... Again, I enjoyed it and would love to watch more if you do anymore.. stay cool Oh and yes...I bet you do have some of that wardrobe hidden somewhere... JUST picking...NO one has wardrobe like her... Kimberly

I actually wanted to download it Jody, but I think you have it set so it cannot be done. In many cases, if you put "ok" in front of the "youtube" in the url, it downloads the song onto your hard drive like this http://www.okyoutube.com/watch?v=Qif5B-s5ggIbut somehow that does not work. Funny, I just tried again and it works now. So clicking on "my" link, it lets you save it so you can play it any time

Well, that one is probably more powerful than that one I spoke of. I tend to update fairly often due to power requirements of bigger productions.
Glad you like it. :-)

Quick question: what are the rights/possibilities of violations doing this sort of thing? I sorta wanted to video myself covering a current song or two to post on YouTube but don't want to get in trouble. I pretty much doubt anyone would come after me but.......... ??
IE I also have somewhere video of me singing "Summertime" at a talent thingy-ma-bob, is that safe to post, y'think?
Also: loved your subtitling thru the video. Haha.

Thanks Linda.
The nice thing is that I've got a nice new mic addition last month. Can't wait until I got a new song ready for production for myself. Already run some others thru it.
As for the piano, it is what it is and I'm not worried about it, it belongs to a friend and I'm storing it for a while. I'll let them deal with it when they come get it.
About the legalities. Well, I'm not selling it, not yet anyway, though I have had some fans ask me to release it to iTunes. I'm sure Lady Ga Ga is making money of the views of my video (though limited since a few thousand views isn't much) as it's her copyright to the music, not mine. If and when I decide to release it, at that point I'll go get the license to sell it.
Of course that didn't answer your legal question. Mostly because doing this type of video right now is still in the grey area of the law. But Lady Ga Ga encourages people to do this type of thing. I would too, since it promotes the music and gets her royalties from YouTube.
So if anyone wishes to do video covers of my songs on YouTube - go ahead, I'd love to see it.

Okay, so.... that's cool she encourages it and it's smart for her. Just teasing on the piano. Mine sounds worse. haha. The thought process being you've clearly got some stuff to invest with, kudos, and a tune isn't all that much. heehee But if it's not yours - yeah, I wouldn't either!! Anyway in your opinion: if I videotaped myself at my keyboard singing, say, "Angel" by Sarah McLaughlan, this somehow automatically generates royalties for her via YouTube views....? Understandably releasing to iTunes is something else entirely. I've seen a whole lot of "covers" out there when I pull up a song on YouTube, and some of them are kinda nice, or interesting to see how someone else plays it through, and no one seems to be getting in any trouble for it. I know there's the Harry Fox thing for doing demos/CD's/MP3s, iTunes etc., but not sure if or how that applies for a homemade YouTube deal. So: gray area. K.... I keep thinking, with MY luck, I'll be the one that gets crunched by someone getting upset, or make one of my favorite artists mad by posting a cover. Haha. Loved your "please send this to GaGa" bits in the video too, very funny. It would be awesome if she DID see it, and like it!! Linda

Anyway a reason I'm asking is it seems more people are more likely to click on a cover song than an original, and there's a few I'd like to try (just me & piano) aaaaaaaaand I'm just sorta wondering if that's free.
Or if I'm s'posed to go through a whole rigamarole process to figure out all sorts of licensing before I just throw a one-off out there.
The video I just posted here, I made sure were public domain songs. That's easy. But... not generally, uh, current. Haha.
Thanks for listening!
Linda

Dorian is a great dog Linda. Have fun with your cover! Thanks BM. I also wanted to point out that I'm pretty surprised at the number of views this thread has gotten. It's a lot of views, over 1000. Wow.
