Hey folks, I just got home from a three day hospital stay in Memphis Tenn. My wife and I go there for a weekend getaway every year to hang out on the legendary Beale St. During the drive down I started feelin pain in my left leg and it got worse as the trip wore on. It started getting really bad as we were bar-hopping saturday night. When we got back to the hotel we discovered that my leg was swollen twice it's normal size and was beet-red. Mary {my wife} convinced me to go the the E.R, which was wise on her part because they discovered a large blood clot that was floating loose, and if undiscovered would have made it's way to my vital organs and killed me on the spot! I'm home now, and will be out of action the next 2 weeks{which is going to be a MAJOR financial hardship!} And I'm going to have to inject myself with anti-coagulant drugs for the next 6 months.
I think it may be time to stay home for a while, since my last 2 roadtrips I've wound up in the hospital. SOOO, How was YOUR weekend?

My week end was almost as bad as yours. My mother is hospitalized for the third time in a month. Old and frail and on her way out. I am happy to hear that you are going to be ok. Take Care!

You've both got our prayers here. Bob, take care of yo'self. Listen to the Doc and, for that matter, it sounds like you should listen to your wife! Get some rest and work on that clot. Jerry, I'm very sorry to hear about your mom. She's lucky to have such a caring son. All the Best, Mike
You've got to know your limitations. I don't know what your limitations are. I found out what mine were when I was twelve. I found out that there weren't too many limitations, if I did it my way. -Johnny Cash It's only music. -niteshift Mike Dunbar Music

Jerry...best wished for your mother and your family. We had to out my mother in a nursing home a couple of months ago. She lives in Branson and we're in St.Louis, about 280 miles apart.

SOOO, How was YOUR weekend? Better! On the other hand, on this romantic getaway to the North Shore, where Minnesota meets Lake Superior, I also had a thumb that was getting more and more swollen and painful from an infection. By the time I was able to visit a clinic up there, it was hurting like crazy. I thought they'd prescribe an antibiotic and call it a day...but no, he says they'd best cut it open. And, you know, that might be PAINFUL, so first thing to do is to jab it right in the sore spot with a needle full of Novocaine. Well...I didn't cry. But my lower lip might've trembled just a little. Either way, a hell of a lot better than a near-death experience...and a whole lot of smoochin' too.

Hi Bob
That sounds pretty scary. I’m glad you are well enough to tell the story and wishing all the best for a full and speedy recovery.

Hi Bob glad things worked out OK after your narrow escape. Once the rat poison kicks in you are pretty much out of the woods. FYI in case you did not know the stuff you are injecting is the same as some rat poisons just a lower dose. My father and also my mother in law had a similar thing happen and both survived for many years after so do not worry too much. But at the time it is a fright. My mother in law is in her mid eighties.....and still capable of giving me a hard time LOL

Holy crap! And here I am stressing over what kind of candy to buy this weekend....
Bob, glad you're still with us, we did just vote for you and all..the least you can do is stay around to see the outcome. Kidding of course, glad you listened to your wife. That's the main reason men don't outlest women, they rarely listen!
Jerry, so sorry to hear about your mom. We nearly lost my 4 years ago, she had a couple heart attacks then ended up with 5 stints in one artery. My husbands grandmother cut her leg yesterday, she's on a lot of meds and a couple different blood thinners, took most of the day to stop the bleeding. She's 93 and going downhill. It's a tough time for you, I could imagine.
Prayers all around.

Hey, Brother Big Bobby, Real Sorry to hear of your Mis-adventure..BUT real glad ya listened to your wife (She deserves an Extra Hug each time ya tell the tale, eh?) ;-)>
My Stepdaddy was all set to join us on a flight to Puerto Rico..when HE had the same thing happen. (Back when we had newer Credit Cards..) Can't Fly with that condition flarin' up, so be extra-careful..the change in Pressures aggravates it.
Hopefully, the anti-coags give a Good Buzz..eh? ;-)>
My Weekend Sucked...as Most-Do these days...BUT...hearin' what You Went Thru...I guess mine wasn't as bad as I'd thought!
Glad to hear you're Recovering..& at least able to Joke About It. (That's a Good Sign!)
Good Luck to ya & Best Wishes, Stan
PS: Jerry, you're on my Prayer List too..Amigo! Moms are also Irreplaceable! (JMO).

Doctor Doctor give me the news I got a bad case of red beet blues!!
So sorry to hear about your bad news but the good news is that you are alive and have a diagnosis and clear instructions.
Hurried and Hearty Healing, Lynn
My weekend was a wedding where they played "Somewhere Over The Rainbow" as the bride walked down the aisle which I thought was a different but very nice touch!

Glory be, Bob! That sounds pretty disgusting . It's when you start flirting with the line between bravery and denial that you know you're in trouble. So in the hypothetical event that something of this nature should ever recur...please err on the side of caution, okay? I'd rather have a live crybaby than a dead he-man anyday (well, except for Thursday's, when JJ gets all ferklempt over "Grey's Anatomy" . ) Seriously though, that must have been quite a scare. I'm glad you caught everything in time and are on the road to recovery. Jerry, sorry to hear too about your mom. The sense of emotional and physical limbo must be very difficult. And finally MARK...while I'm sure the needle hurt like the dickens...your retelling of the scene is fairly comical. Thank god we can still laugh about such things, huh? So with that, good luck to all, and a fond goodnight! Beth

BOB!!! Thank God Mary was able to talk you into going to the hospital! Oh man, I'm just so glad you're okay! Jerry, sorry to hear about your mom. My parents are getting on in years and I worry about them constantly. Mark, glad you got the thumb thingy straighted out. Was it a bug bite? I'm sure the smoochin' was a nice bonus! Well, contrary to everyone else, I had a GREAT weekend. My band kicked ass. Wish y'all lived closer so you could come out and party with me. Maybe we'll be on Youtube someday.

WOW BOB! WTF!?
Man,,,glad you are at least alive still!
Hey,,,,IF there is any next time, or something other close to that serious as those symptoms that aren't normal, GET to a good doc right away, to rule in or out things. You're not 20 anymore!!!
Get well, and stay well!
When driving,,,,move your feet back and forth, which uses the big muscles in your legs. (Everyone should do that when driving or flying.

Hey Bob,
Though the financial part sucks Bob, try looking at it as a 2 week chance to sit back and appreciate the life you have had and the life you get to continue having. With more than my share of close calls already, I always take that approach afterwards and often it propels me in an even more positive direction. In your case, as a guy who never takes much time off, try writing some songs or doing something else you never have time to do. And spend it with your wife... there's never enough time for that sort of thing (which I have learned the hard way over the past year).
Take care! And to all of you knuckleheads out there.. when you have a health warning sign.. DON'T IGNORE IT! And don't play tough guy/gal... it's not worth it. If you don't get help for yourself then do it for those who love you. You at least owe it to them!

It's those long drives that do it. Not that uncommon. My wife is always telling me to move my legs when I'm going back and forth to Michigan. And don't sit on my wallet. Glad to hear you made it to the ER on time Bob. Blood clots can kill ya pretty quick. So take the two weeks and get well. You'll recover in time.
Jerry, sorry to hear your weekend wasn't so good. I just went through that with my little brother. My thoughts are with you.
Speaking of Mom's and weekends. I just finished moving my Mother in Law to my house in Tennessee from Michigan. It took a 26 foot Uhaul to move her stuff. Most of which is in storage. Her four cats now live in the back part of my garage which was going to be my project studio, and her three dogs are in the house. I set her up in the lower level of my house. Which was my family room and music room. All my music stuff is now piled in a corner. It is going to be an adjustment.

BC, you're too old to die young and leave a good looking corpse. Take care and listen to your wife, your doctor, and your body. And Brian's advice ain't too shabby either. I look forward to hearing what you did during your "time out".
And the next time you write about a body part that's beet red and swollen to twice its normal size, I hope it's your account of a Viagra experiment...On second thought.....

Mom had an Abdominal Aorta Aneurysm repair two years ago and things have been sliding down hill ever since. It has been a real roller coaster ride with the doctors death predictions, three of them, plus the constantly changing medical problems. I medically rescued her after her surgery. Fired her two doctors and took her away from the nursing homes. It has been a long tough road but I can live with myself just knowing that I am doing the best that I can for her. I know that Alan has his hands full with Helen and Bill just went through hell with his brother too. A big hearfelt thanks to all of you for your prayers and thoughts!

So glad your better half got you straightened out, Bob. That must have been a real scare and an eye opener. I hope you'll put her "in charge" in all matters regarding your health. You just don't know how much you would be missed around here. Your stories and antics are legends here at JPF. Be well, be happy... and be more careful with those eating and drinking enjoyments.

Yikes! What a scary story Bob! Glad everything is turning out alright. Take it easy (as hard as it will be). Taking blood thinners can pose other dangers with bleeding complications. I understand financial hardships, but without health, you've got nothin'. Soooooooo.... take it easy, and enjoy a well deserved break from the norm. Watch some good old movie classics. Jeez, after re-reading my post, I hope I didn't give you the blues. My wife Sandra says I have a knack for that. But really, take it easy. You'll be in my thoughts. Best, John

My dad has a really bad time with blood clots he's had 6 in the last three months, and he's only 56. They're a serious issue so I'm glad everything is going better. Get some rest and enjoy the downtime.
Jerry sorry to hear about your mom.
Mark I hope the thumb heals quickly.

Bob, So sorry to hear about it, and I hope you get better quickly. Being a hemophiliac, getting blood clots is nothing I worry about - except when I WANT it to clot. Wanna swap some blood?

Jim, I know what you're saying about the bruises. They took blood from me every few hours at the hospital, and now I've got the self-injections. I'm pretty much a human pin-cushion right now, and since I've always bruised easily anyway, they're pretty nasty!

Bob, you're lucky not to have gotten a pulmonary embolus from it. Having a blood clot is serious, as you know. Take care of yourself!! Hugs and know I'll be saying prayers for ya each night.
"Grits is one of those country-boy words that is both singular and plural-like deer, elk and sheep. I think the singular is appropriate when there's a modifier that makes it clear one is talking about something specific. Like, 'Grits are good for you, but these here grits is tasty.'"~~Joe Wrabek

Brian First of all, thanks to everyone for the well-wishes. Brian, you are absolutely right, and I intend to heed your advice. It wasn't until this respite that I REALLY realized what a toll my lifestyle is taking on me. My medical report reads like "War and Peace".{Overweight, hypertension, high blood pressure, gout, stomach ulcers,IBS, and of course my little demon known as alcoholism to name a few. Maybe this was meant to be to slow things down.As soon as I can move around without excruciating pain, I intend to do the unthinkable.."gasp" write and PRACTICE. I already feel better having been dried out now for 5 days. Thanks again everyone for the encouragement!

Huh. I didn't know those things were in War & Peace. I'll have to re-read it. Thanks for the tip.
Bob, the respite is probably good for you. And there probably is a song (or tow or three) in it.

I'm hobbling around without crutches now. The pain seems to be isolated in the bottom of my foot. I'm planning on being back in action this sunday {the 8th} I finally got out of the house and drove yesterday {I had to put up some fliers at a new venue}
I'm losing my mind being cooped up in the house, and my wife took on extra hours at work {which is killing me that that she's had to do that!}so it's been just me and the dog most of the time. {And of course HE doesn't understand why I'm not able to play with him!} I've turned it into something productive though..I've written 2 new songs, and learned a couple of more covers {"Don't think twice it's alright by Dylan} Can't believe I've never learned THAT one! And "Keep on Smilin'" by Wet Willie {My theme song lately!} It's been good to clear out my head. {Speaking of which, the doc's say due to my thinning blood I need to limit my drinking, {probably a GOOD thing,} but we'll see how THAT one works out given my extrordinary lack of will-power in that area. Thanks one and all for the well-wishes, and I'll let you know how it goes sunday.

Bob, from now on, instead of our FIVE SHOTS when I come to see you play, we'll only do ONE. I'll be your support. And for every drink you DON'T drink...well, I'll just go ahead and drink it! That's what a TRUE FRIEND is for!
