From 1992 to 2005 I lived in Downers Grove, IL which is about nine miles from where I now live. The final weekend of evey June they have a street festival which is one of the major blowouts in the suburban Chicago area. This piece was written at the time of that event, which I could walk to from where I was living at the time.
FUN, OH BOY, FUN
c1997 Brian Beecher
After a long wait We have the summer sun Now the time is here To have fun, oh boy, fun
Once you are successful Tying up loose ends You head into town And try to meet new friends
Keeping an eye on Future possibilities Leaving plenty of time For availability Gonna have some fun While the time to shine is here
Summertime is here A time to love and play Nothing beats the pleasure Of making friends today
Once you’re here a while You’ll be glad you came You may just get lessons in A new sport or game
This is likely to be A very fine weekend Although you may not have A lotta cash to spend
With old enemies You could make amends You should make good progress in it all
After a long wait We have the summer sun Now the time is here To have fun, oh boy, fun
Once you are successful Tying up loose ends You head into town And try to meet new friends
Keeping an eye on Future possibilities Leaving plenty of time For availability Gonna have some fun While the time to shine is here
If you fully understand What you have in mind What you’re looking for Shouldn’t be too hard to find
So it’s time to get out Your very best walking shoes Get plenty of rest And eat the right kinds of foods
What may come your way You can never tell A long-distance trip With someone you know well
Once you get sorted out Things can be real swell And you should have An enjoyable time together
After a long wait We have the summer sun Now the time is here To have fun, oh boy, fun
Once you are successful Tying up loose ends You head into tow And try to meet new friends
Keeping an eye on Future possibilities Leaving plenty of time For availability Gonna have some fun While the time to shine is here
Cultural pursuits Are also fun today Particularly if have company
A visit to a museum or gallery Should be inspiring And not a mystery
Doing something that takes you Out of yourself Such as a new hobby Can make you feel so swell
You can have new freedom For yourself as well All your troubles you can overcome

Caroline:
Thanks for the encouragement. I can picture this one as a light, very uptempo piece that can be expressed rather easily. I usually still attend that festival on one of its three days even though I have moved about nine miles up the road. Am getting ready to post a couple more lyrics now.
Peace, Brian

As a footnote, the year I posted this turned out to be the final year of that particular summer festival which inspired this piece. There was nothing scheduled the following year, 2010, until the local Rotary Club decided to sponsor a slimmed-down affair titled Grove Fest, which was held on the third weekend of July. But apparently the final weekend of June carried enough sentiment in the town that the following year the fest was moved to that weekend, and the more slimmed down version of the old festival is still going that weekend each year. Not very far off now.
