Hey guys,
I am working on an "updated" version of 'Je crois entendre encore', an aria from Bizet's opera "The Pearl Fishers" (written in 1863).
What must I do for copyrights?
Thanks,
JM

Hey Joshua,
I Am Not A Lawyer...but...Bizet died in 1873. Current U.S. law says a copyright lasts 70 years past the death of the composer. So, unless there's some legal snafu of which I'm unaware, his work is fair game.
You've got to know your limitations. I don't know what your limitations are. I found out what mine were when I was twelve. I found out that there weren't too many limitations, if I did it my way. -Johnny Cash It's only music. -niteshift Mike Dunbar Music

You need to be careful here. Copyright law gets a little trickier when dealing with things like operas since many of these are not considered to be "published works." Also, Bizet was French (and some of his works were originally produced in Austria). You need someone with knowledge of international copyright law to be sure that what you're doing won't be an infringement. American copyright law will most likely not apply. Before you expend your time and resources, you should consider consulting with an Intellectual Property Lawyer, to make sure you don't find out later that all your work was for nothing and you can't use it (or worse, that it's considered a derivative and someone else owns the results of your hard work).

Copyrights can be renewed too, can't they?
There will always be another song to be written. Someone will write it. Why not you? www.garyeandrews.com

I'm sure the copyright on "Happy Birthday To You" is past its sell-by date, but it's still under copyright.

70 years past the death of the last surviving heir. Then they revert to "Public Domain."
