Hi Tom,
I just use the peel-off label sheets with the adhesive right on them...you know, like a postage stamp nowadays. I wasn't aware that there was any other type. They end up looking very pro when they're placed onto the cd...and I've even had remarks r.e. my presentation on several occasions. As we all know, presentation of your pitches are very important. For those who haven't pitched....that first impression is everything....from your cover sheet, to the cd labels, to the cd case, and especially the outside of the envelope. It all tells them that you are dead serious about what you do and care very much as to how it comes across. One thing that I also do is to make an extra cd label to place directly onto the inside of the case right behind the cd, so that when the cd is separated from the case...they know where it belongs, but better yet, if they see the case lying separately, it is one more reminder of the title of the song, writer/writers and contact numbers. Just my two pennies this morning.
Thanks for starting this thread, Tom. Anyone else have any good tips for when you are sending a pitch?

I bought a printer that will print right on "printable" CDs. It was not expensive and produces CDs with a photo quality image on them. You can make up the label using readily available software.
Beats the heck out of labels.

The peel off sheets work fine. You can buy a type of cd that allows you to burn info on them without a printer. You simply insert the cd upside down and the burner that puts the sound on the other side will burn info onto it. You have to have a newer cd burner, most of the newer ones will do it, and you have to have a special cd.
You've got to know your limitations. I don't know what your limitations are. I found out what mine were when I was twelve. I found out that there weren't too many limitations, if I did it my way. -Johnny Cash It's only music. -niteshift Mike Dunbar Music

I use the press-on label sheets, myself, because I design my own labels. I know people who have the print-on-CDs printers, and the output does look nice. I have figured out a work-around that would allow me to continue using my design software (which is antique), and am anxious to try it. I have one of those printers on my for-when-I-have-money-again list.

Thanks Janice
yes-a professional presentation is very important......all communications and materials must show respect for the process......I am a veteran of the famous "come one-come all cattle drives" at BMI in Nashville...where the first 50 songwriters to sign up and line up get to pitch One song to a guest publisher..I have seen folks come from Utah for some of these things.....Then proceed to present stuff to the publisher that looks like it was done by kids in a daycare center on " careers in songwriting day" the amazing thing is they do it with a straight face....you name it-cds with sharpie writing and cross outs on the disc-recordings where you can hear background noises on the song-no typed lyrics or lyrics that dont match the song etc etc...it amazes me that some folks would invest the airfare and hotel money to then blow it with a jerry lewis .presentation...again-respect for the process and presenting yourself as a professional to other professionals in a professional industry.......your singing is great-love it........thanks for dropping in on the thread......

Hi Colin
those new fancy printers are nice.......as are the "LIGHTSCRIBE" CD BURNERS" with todays technology you can indeed do a professional looking and sounding recording right at home....we are so lucky to have all this stuff available....but in the end its all about the song itself.....you always put alot of thought into your songs.....

Hi Mike
thanks for your usual great job on the recording and suggestions for the cd labeling materials...I have some fancy stuff in my laptop and printer-programs I am just now discovering.......if this wasnt just 5 cd's I would be down at the cd service I use....but as far as I know Warner Brothers is the only game in town as far as COMEDY.....so thats why I am not using a professional CD service on this one.....you do such great work as a producer...always glad to refer folks to you....you are very talented........moreso than some of the dudes from the shake and bake recording schools in nashville.....who then somehow end up running the big boards at the stand alone studios thinking they are Phil Spector-and putting so many bells and whistles into the recording it sounds like something done in a DJ BOOTH at a disco on Free Crack Night....

Hi Joe
I dont get into fancy CD design covers myself.......even when I am going with the CD services.....I do plain jane Cd's without colors and fancy graphics.....other than good recordings and materials that are easily read-I try to remember that in the end-its all about the song itself........so my stuff has to sell itself....I am not technically gifted or artistic as far as graphics or whatever..thanks for droppin in on the thread...........you always write impressive songs.........

I don't have a printer to print on CD's but if I did I have a ton of my own pictures I could use for the labels as well as song names and other contact info. If you already have a printer for a more professional look by all means do it.
Every other part of my submissions are as professional as is probably needed.
I print out the mailing envelope with contact address and return address and add the artists name on the outside of the envelope.
My cover letter is a form I have developed over the years and is saved in my computer and used over and over.
Lyric sheets are saved on a disc that I print from with all contact info listed.
They may still have labeling machines, as well as the blank labels you can use to print your info and adhere to the CD. I think I have seen them in Office supply outlets.
I also have other forms that I have developed such as Split Publishing agreement, Mechanical License, Mechanical Request form, Artist co-writer agreement and a Publishing Contract.
I also have a pretty good Catalog of songs to submit.
If someone turns their nose up because someone used a Sharpie to label a CD I probably wouldn't want to do business with that person anyway.

I have used peel off labels for ages. I also have a printer that prints direct onto CDs. Problem is the ink runs on both systems. It is also important to buy a machine to center and apply these labels. Here is a link for the one I use. http://www.pressit.com/label-applicator-systems.htmlI have not used lightscribe but have heard that it is not as professional or versatile as labels or direct printing. I have ordinary paper adhesive for everyday use and expensive glossy plastic film type labels that are almost invisible I use for special stuff. I would not even attempt to apply my own adhesive to a plain paper label..... asking for trouble.

Hi Tom, I use the Memorex CD software and labels and it works well except you have to take it off carefully so you don't have any wrinkles but after awhile you get the knack. Wish you well. Best, Lynn

For any of you who print directly on the CD Discmakers has a CD that has a water resistant coating that seals the Ink in. It isn't 100% waterproof but darn close. I have not had any smearing of the ink at all.

I've tried 'em all... and, for the money... nothing beats the Epson line of inkjet printers that print directly onto the CD. Those who are concerned about getting CD's wet can invest in a spray can of clear coat to waterproof the printed side. Somebody must be writing alot of sad songs to be getting teardrops all over their CD's... LOL! My only complaint with Epson is the highway robbery prices for replacement cartridges. Mine uses six colors. The way around this is to simply buy ink from places on the net that specialize in that medium... or go to Fry's Electronics and buy it right off the shelf.
Paper labels, they tell me, are really frowned upon in Nashville by all the A&R people. Don't know why.
Lightscribe (no color) is extremely slow and quirky. A couple of other recent entries really suck. Can't remember their names but my advice is... don't go there.
Regards,
Dave

Tom,
Try to keep from giving your CD's to people underwater, or in the rain. That has a negative affect on them. Missed you last week.

Hey Dave, I have an Epson and we found a website called www.lasermonks.comYou'll find their prices to be about half off or better for ink. This is actually a monastery in Wisconsin and they refill , etc. The best part is the free samples of candy they make! www.waynelongtin.com

Tom, the stick-ons work pretty good and I've used them in the past but about a year ago I purchased a HP Photosmart D5160 printer. It cost $100 for the printer and it will print directly onto a "printable" CD. The print quality is excellent.

I also have one....There is a problem with the ink not being waterproof but special aerosol spray on fixer helps.

Hi Wayne: Sorry to be so late in responding. Thanks so much for the link to LaserMonks. I have not tried them yet but will in the near future. I also took the time to listen to one of your songs via your link. Nice work. After reading your bio, I'm impressed with the progress you've made... and the courage it must have taken. Best, Dave http://www.ShowCaseYourMusic.com/DaveRice
