That "Nowhere Man" Challenge was interesting. It began as an "uncoverable" cover challenge...and we ended up picking a really easy one. Hey, it could have been "Bohemian Rhapsody"... :o So Big Jim asked me to post this thread for the next challenge, which we have arbitrarily decided. We'll do others too, but for now, it's a Just Plain Folks Cover Challenge. What we would like to do is choose an original work by a Just Plain Folks member, and cover it. In this first step, we ask you to offer up an original song or lyric of your own that you'd be willing to let others cover. We will accept these entries on this thread from now until Sunday night, March 8th. On Monday, I'll make a poll, and we can all choose which lyric or song we will cover. If it's a song that gets voted in, the challenge is to cover it as you see fit. If it's a lyric that gets voted in, the challenge is to write the music for it. Since this challenge is strictly for the purposes of education and fun, the original song or lyric will remain the property of the composer and/or lyricist, and our subsequent covers are only to be used for this challenge...any other uses will need permission from the original writer. So understand: all entrants who submit anything to this thread, by entering, agree to their stuff being used and abused and covered in any which way during the challenge. And anyone who covers the song or writes music to the lyric must be willing to let it end there...after all, imagine one lyric and 12 songs...kind of a tangled web, yes? So the original writer will hold all the decision power about subsequent use of the piece...if you're uncomfortable with that arrangement, best not play. But we think that you should. I'll make the selection poll on Monday, we'll vote for two days, and the challenge will be on come Wednesday, March 11. Songs will come due on April 1st. Meanwhile, no joke. If you would like to submit a song to be covered or a lyric to be composed to, submit ONE (that's one, folks) on this thread. Let the games begin! -Mark & Big Jim

Well, I was going to suggest us all covering "Sweet Transvestite" from the Rocky Horror Picture Show *pictures certain male JPF members in a feather boa! :D* but the JPF member songs or lyrics sound good too. This will be a first for me so I'm really looking forward to it!

Okay, Mark--I'll bite. Here is [drum roll] The Song That Was Rejected by American Idol in 2007, "Rotten Candy." I never have gotten a good recording of it, though it gets played a lot live. I always thought it would sound good with a vocalist of the femasle persuasion--but I'm obviously living proof that it is possible for a guy to sing it. Have fun--and if you use it, I will be real curious to hear what the results come out like. Link is www.soundclick.com/bands/page_songinfo.cfm?bandID=183557&songID=6905706And lyrics follow. Thanks for doing this. joe [4/4 w/strong beat] ROTTEN CANDY --J. Wrabek 1. When I get home from work at night, there’s no one here but me, And that great big gaping empty spot where your love used to be; The dresser drawers are open, no TV or stereo, ‘Cause you took nearly ev’rything the day I watched you go. CHORUS: Broken heart, wilted flowers, rotten candy on the floor, And emptiness a-waitin’ just beyond the bedroom door; I guess I should have noticed you didn’t love me any more— Broken heart, wilted flowers, rotten candy on the floor. 2. A photograph of you and me hangs lonesome on the wall, Reminding me you took away what mattered most of all; The life we had together you’ve sold off to someone new, And in its place is empty space I want to fill with you. CHORUS: Broken heart, wilted flowers, rotten candy on the floor, And emptiness a-waitin’ just beyond the bedroom door; I guess I should have noticed you didn’t love me any more— Broken heart, wilted flowers, rotten candy on the floor. BRIDGE (SAME CHORD PROGRESSION AS CHORUS): My friends say I should just go out and find somebody new; They don’t realize how much of me you took with you; If I had to do it over, I’d hold on to my heart— It’s so difficult to piece together what you’ve torn apart. CHORUS: Broken heart, wilted flowers, rotten candy on the floor, And emptiness a-waitin’ just beyond the bedroom door; I guess I should have noticed you didn’t love me any more— Broken heart, wilted flowers, rotten candy on the floor. [BREAK] BRIDGE: My friends say I should just go out and find somebody new; They don’t realize how much of me you took with you; If I had to do it over, I’d hold on to my heart— It’s so difficult to piece together what you’ve torn apart. CHORUS: Broken heart, wilted flowers, rotten candy on the floor, And emptiness a-waitin’ just beyond the bedroom door; I guess I should have noticed you didn’t love me any more— Broken heart, wilted flowers, rotten candy on the floor. Broken heart, wilted flowers, rotten candy on the floor. © 2006 J. Wrabek dba Outside Services Ltd. All the usual rights reserved just in case.

Shoosh Polly do not let my secret out....I have been known to sing that song......I also have played Riff Raff (the faithful man servant) in a production of this classic rock op. I will dig out a version of Sweet T and post it for you to hear. edit PS My daughter does a mean version of "Over at the Frankenstein place" might post that as well.

Joe, I LOVE that song! I would love to cover that. So, help my feeble little mind understand here...iffin we voted, by chance, to cover Joe's song, could I wrestle with it a little bit, maybe change a word or two, maybe sing a couple of notes differently? Not that your song isn't perfect, Joe, it IS, but my voice is different than yours. HA HA Jim! BTW, I love "Over at the Frankenstein Place"...found myself singing it in the car a few times. I used to go see the Rocky Horror Picture Show in the theater every Saturday night when I was 16...threw toast, threw rice, put the newspaper over my head, had a squirt bottle, knew all the lines. I smoked a lot of pot back then.

Cincy, yes. I have been asked that before by folks who have wanted to cover one of my songs, and the answer has always been "yes." (Keep in mind that is not a lot of people.)
When I played with the Dodson Drifters, we regularly improved people's material we covered (with two writers in the band, there was rather a lot of hubris going around)--we even improved Bob Dylan (we considered nothing sacred). When you do somebody else's material, you have to be able to put your own spin on it. Go for it. And don't worry.

Why not? We wanted to do two things: include more people, and not have an extremely confusing contest. But I think adding an instrumental piece to be played with fits the spirit of this particular challenge. So count yourself in, Kaley!

So it is settled then Entries can be one of the following provided they are original pieces written by a JPF member.
1. Existing song.. lyrics and music to be covered in any style 2. lyrics only..... add music in any style we choose. 3. Music only...... compose lyrics and cover it...
re the music only...if that is chosen I suggest we can use the original as a backing track..... or using the melody and chord structure we do our own alternative version either making a song by adding lyrics or as an alternative intrumental version.
This is just a bit of fun...we want people to experiment with lyrics and music... try doing something outside your own comfort zone...push the boundaries. As Mark said all entrants must be prepared to have your song hung drawn and quartered.... all in the name of fun and education....we hope you have fun and work within the spirit of this challenge. Thanks to all who are going to participate

I wasn't going to enter a song because, well, what fun would that be for me? I like the challenge of interpreting someone else's Then it occurred to me that if we all felt that way, who would suggest a song? I looked for one that could go a few different ways stylistically, that could be sung by either gender, and that at least had the variety of a bridge in it. Down side is that I expect it is easier to play on the keys than on a guitar. My entry is Champion: http://www.soundclick.com/bands/page_songInfo.cfm?bandID=377550&songID=6832815Lyric follows: Champion (c) 2008 by SW Campbell While others claim the lens and lights As if it’s their God-given right You toil away in lone obscurity In a quest to capture gold You take the higher, harder road That’s why you are a champion to me It came down to one day all along When with a billion looking on You have but moments to fulfill your destiny But of the pressure that you face You exhibit not a trace That’s why you are a champion to me How many times we hear that good guys finish last How many times that seems the case Yet now how many times the world has seen you act With such humility and grace In the hype of the event It’s sometimes easy to forget That after all you’re just a human being But one of rare few who succeed In showing us what we could be That’s why you are a champion to me

OK, I'll join in. This is one I just put up for critique. I always felt it was worth more of something but have no imagination as to what that might be. It's really simple, chords available upon request. Is this place great or what? http://soundclick.com/share?songid=7343423IT WILL BE © Ricki E. Bellos Face to face Eye to eye In this space There are no lies Take the time One on one With a smile You’ve just begun It’s not a dream to live this way Not a fantasy to have this everyday It will be It will be Love’s fire burns In the heart Life’s lessons learned Healing starts When it’s love you hold In your hand What you live is Peace, love and understanding It’s not a dream to live this way Not a fantasy to have this everyday It will be It will be It’s not a dream to live this way Not a fantasy to have this everyday Desire, ask, believe, receive It will be Desire, ask, believe, receive It will be Desire, ask, believe, receive It will be

Scott we could always let the persons whose entry has been picked to cover one of the other songs so they can take part.

(I shouldn't be the only one expressing opinions here.) Yes, I think that would work, too. I've been itchin' to have our band record "Rotten Candy"--they do such a good job of it. (And that's if you pick mine, of course. I ain't 'spectin' no miracles, here. You've got a lot of good material to choose from.)

Hi Guys ! Okay - I'm game - this is one that I like and Totally intend on doing a better job on it, but just haven't gotten back to it. But it could be a fun one, I think jm http://soundclick.com/share?songid=5988585I'm Gonna Take That Train © joice marie 2007 While Amtrac passes Balloch's Crossing My thoughts fly like the train Thinking 'bout the people riding Between the drops of rain Are they heading out to the countryside checking out the views? Or running from a lover's fight Trying to start brand new? Chorus As Each day is dawning the train rolls through Each night it comes back home One of these days I'm gonna take that train And find my way to you Find my way to you You left me on a gray cold morning Off to try something new The walls are closing in, you warned There's nothing else to do You'd send me word of where you were When I should go meet you I search lonely faces, the train rides through And still no call or clue lift to music break.... One of these days, I'm gonna take that train and find my way to you short music break - hook Bridge A lot of question leave me wondering Weighing on my mind If I take the train to you Tell me what I'll find Chorus As each day is dawning the train rolls through Each night it comes back home One of these days I'm gonna take that train And find my way to you riding out into blue Just to find my way to you outro -hook

I don't think I can do this one, but I'm putting it up b/c it would be kind of fun to try and cover. My Mexican show-tune folks. "It's a part of my cycle, my trilogy" she says in her Nigel voice. This is the Copa Cabana in Mexico..with a ghost. Ghost of Mexico Wendy DuMond 1. On a rainy windswept night In old Tijuana Along the mall across from the city square I found myself in the middle Of a drama For they say the spirit Of a woman lingers there She told me She'd seen me in a vision Said I used to dance like Fred Astaire I told her she must have been mistaken But she said it was me And she didn't care (Chorus) I'm dancing... With the Ghost of Mexico Holding her tight to music sad and slow There in my arms I felt her supple charms And saw things that Happened long ago Dancing... With the Ghost of Mexico 2. She told me she was a singer A regular in the Gold room For she was a beauty A dead ringer of Rita Hayworth, down to her perfume She spoke to me of an antidote Said she'd show me where she buried the treasure And then we were floating and my mind was noting how the wind and the rain passed right through her (Chorus) I'm dancing... With the Ghost of Mexico Holding her tight to music sad and slow There in my arms I felt her supple charms And saw things that Happened long ago Dancing... With the Ghost of Mexico 3. We went hand in hand down the alley And stopped just behind the old high school And there she sang me her finale And showed me her chest of jewels She took a vial of liquid from inside her coat Told me to drink it and be strong Swore she didn't mean it And as I began to drink it She vanished at the end of her song (Chorus) I'm dancing... With the Ghost of Mexico Holding her tight to music sad and slow There in my arms I felt her supple charms And saw things that Happened long ago Dancing... With the Ghost of Mexico Dancing... with the Ghost of Mexico

Here's a happy one for the mix... (needs a melody) "I'm Walkin' On The Sunny Side" [size:8pt](c)2008 Lynn Orloff I’m walkin’ on the sunny side, I’m lookin’ at the funny side, I only see a sky that’s wrapped in blue, I’ve had enough of rainy days, I wanna’ watch parading days, My mind’s made up that’s what I’m gonna’ do. I'm singin' out a happy song, I'm hopin' that you'll sing along, And if we sing off key no one will know, An attitude can make or break, So smile wide for goodness sake, You’ll soon be clapping hands and tapping toes. Life’s road has lots of bumps and gets a little crooked now and then, But all you have to do is trade that frown in for a grin...I’m skippin’ down the avenue, That rainbow’s comin’ into view, There’s nothin’ that can take my joy away, I’m walkin’ on the sunny side, I happy just to be alive, I’m walkin on the sunny side, I’m havin’ me a real good time, I’m walkin’ on the sunny side of life!!

Ah, what the heck.... http://www.soundclick.com/bands/page_songInfo.cfm?bandID=9559&songID=6768539“Garden of Little White Lies” © 2008 Lyrics Beth Williams, BMI / Music & Vocals Steve Biederman Timing was never their strong suit So they just kept their eyes on the prize And planted fake smiles on their faces In their garden of little white lies Day after day though, they hungered For each other, and no more goodbyes Relied on their dreams to sustain them In their garden of little white lies Pre-Chorus: But twisting the truth can cause judgment to fade And secrets get slippery when no one’s afraid Chorus: Those little white lies Grew up 'round their thighs As they played in the shade of their garden But plant a black seed It blooms twisted and bleeds A minefield with no room for bargain Harvest time came without warning With haste, a gate left open wide Then all came to stare at the two unaware In their garden of little white lies Pre-Chorus: Their love and their fate had been one in the same Until they made up their own rules to the game Chorus repeat Chorus 2: Those little white lies Grew up 'round their thighs As they played in the shade of their garden But plant a black seed It blooms twisted and bleeds A minefield with no room TO bargain

Yeah, I'll throw down too. This one isn't hard, and it's gender-neutral. It would be a trip to hear other versions. If it gets picked, then I guess I'll have to do a death metal version or something. :-P http://soundclick.com/share?songid=7368174WanderlustI don’t mind doing time But too much makes me blue I’ve got a wanderlust, honey How about you? That highway sign sure looks fine So why not go today? I’ve got a wanderlust, honey Let’s fly away Santa Fe or Morro Bay So many wonderful places for making love No stone to drag, just a sleeping bag And a full moon up above I would love to see you and me Chasing stars on the highway If you’ve got a wanderlust, honey We could leave today Tennessee is fine with me There isn’t a place on this map that goes too far And I like the way you walk and I like the way you talk But honey I love the way you drive my car Yes I need you today, but either way I’ll be gone by two ‘Cause I’ve got a wanderlust, honey I’m hoping you do too I don’t mind doing time But too much makes me blue I’ve got a wanderlust, honey I’m hoping you do too (Copyright 2009 by Mark Kaufman)

Ok in my long hiatus I've been longing to get back involved again (longing or lusting?) either way this looks like a great opportunity to throw my hat in the ring! I just recently got a bass and am itching to lay down some tracks! But just for kicks I'll post something I wrote recently that was shocking to me. I can't believe this flowed out of my consciouness and onto paper, but here it is
Freewheel thoughts
1st Verse Antagonistic blues sliding through my soul Developing the chains as the prison’s taken hold Misbegotten lies challenging reality Diving underneath the waves of my own philosophy
Pre-Chorus Bringing on illumination to a multitude of masses From varied economic, race and social classes Perestroika on a pendulum striking fear into our hearts Watch our federation government put the horse before the cart Chorus Freewheel thoughts Like spokes inside a wheel Engines full reverse On the irony of steel Free wheel thoughts Spinning round my mind Let the burning sun Send sight to the blind Freewheel thoughts Of the inverted kind
2nd Verse Spoken word manipulations of the writing on the wall Twisting speeches into rhetoric in our nation’s Courts and Halls Pushing thin vivacious beauty for the prominence of sin See religious leaders falling as the devil starts to win
Pre-Chorus Acrimonious indignation as human flesh rots in the street As the liars and the charlatans forge their names beside the deed Dedicate yourself to nothing as your soul writhes in the dust As your ridin’ on the bubble remember someday it’ll bust
Chorus Freewheel thoughts Like spokes inside a wheel Engines full reverse On the irony of steel Free wheel thoughts Spinning round my mind Let the burning sun Send sight to the blind Freewheel thoughts Of the inverted kind
Bridge Patronizing patriots parroting posted paraphernalia. Resurrected Righteous rogues robed in random regalia.
Chorus Freewheel thoughts Like spokes inside a wheel Engines full reverse On the irony of steel Free wheel thoughts Spinning round my mind Let the burning sun Send sight to the blind Freewheel thoughts Of the inverted kind

Now that RPM is over maybe I can join in the fun. Here's a tune that could be done as is (with new music) or heck, write another verse/bridge. Change a word here and there it could go as a female singing, too. MP3: http://soundclick.com/share?songid=4973283Indian Casino (© Kevin Emmrich 2007) Well I tried to talk to my baby She’s always in a hurry to go I want to be serious, talk about things But she just always says no I’ve lost my baby to the Indian Casino The neon lights are flashing The pretty boys are dancing The drinks are flowing And the lights are down low I say this for real, but she says “Hey, shut up and deal” I lost my baby to the Indian Casino The bank account is low, the bills are high I don’t know where to turn, it makes me want to cry She says ‘What’s the Fuss”, but she needs Gambler’s Anonymous I’ve lost my baby to the Indian Casino Well I tried to talk to my baby She’s always in a hurry to go I want to be serious, talk about things But she just always says no I’ve lost my baby to the Indian Casino I’ve lost my baby to the Indian Casino I’ve lost my dreams to the Indian Casino

Well, what an interesting challenge! I posted this last year for critique and it’s still evolving! I think it could be sung by either male or female…. Now is Forever ©2008 Kristi McKeever I know this feeling well It’s loyal like a friend I’ve gone and done it now Found love by accident Pure luck is in my corner Cuz the world is a big place How do kindred spirits meet And share life with an embrace (lift) We hold hands with time because (ch) Now is forever When I’m with you Moments don’t matter Just these feelings do Your tender gaze Falls soft on my face Now is forever When love celebrates Perhaps we needed to wait See all of life’s true colors Learn what best friends look like so We would recognize each other (lift) We’ll share the best of times because (ch) Now is forever When I’m with you Moments don’t matter Just these feelings do Your tender gaze Falls soft on my face Now is forever When love celebrates (br) And if we fall behind and Let the magic lose its place Tempt me with your deep desires And the passion will light our flame (lift) We have no sense of time because (ch) Now is forever When I’m with you Moments don’t matter Just these feelings do Your tender gaze Falls soft on my face Now is forever When love celebrates Now is forever When love celebrates

Lyric-only entry. Wants music real bad. Can be sung by a male or female. My mind says it could be jazzy, bluesy, ballady, poppy, countrified...Okay, so I'm trying to make a case for it. A Place To Come Back To © 2009 Greg C. Brown I can't tell what you're thinking, There was once a time I could. You never had to say it, I always understood. And I could sense your feelings As though I could read your mind. But lately I don't know you Even after all this time. I think you've gotten restless, Maybe lost out on some dreams. Are there things that you've been missing, Or places you've not seen? It shouldn't be surprising, As I wait each night alone, That you've become this stranger I have never really known. CHORUS If you're looking for some greener pasture, I can only wish my very best for you. I hope you find what it is you're after, But if you don't, you know that's okay too, 'Cause you'll always have a place to come back to. We went through changing seasons While we shared a single soul. All the storms that we have weathered, I thought would keep us whole. But somehow things are different, Yet I almost never saw The signals you were sending, Or the writing on the wall. CHORUS If you're looking for some greener pasture, I can only wish my very best for you. I hope you find what it is you're after, But if you don't, you know that's okay too, 'Cause you'll always have a place to come back to. BRIDGE I won't let my teardrops fall For what I thought we had. I won't hold you with emotions, I'll just wish you luck instead. REPEAT CHORUS If you're looking for that proverbial greener pasture I can only wish my very best for you. I hope you find what it is you're after, But if you don't, you know that's okay too, 'Cause you'll always have a place to come back to. You'll always have a place to come back to.

Hey Folks, why not in due time just put ALL songs submitted on one page with the links or lyrics, to then have anyone choose any song they wish?
Or, do it as is!

Hi John I think Mark will be putting up a poll sometime tomorrow. I am sure he will compile a list of entries with links and we then all vote for our fav. The winner is the one we all cover. Anyone considering entering better get the entry in quick.

O.K. I will throw this one out. It is an upbeat country song that needs a female vocalist (or a bit of a rewrite). Lyrics are on Soundclick page. [color:#6600CC][size:17pt]Looking Back At You

Good thinking, John...but that's what we're already doing. From my first post: I'll make the selection poll on Monday, we'll vote for two days, and the challenge will be on come Wednesday, March 11. Songs will come due on April 1st.
Meanwhile, no joke. If you would like to submit a song to be covered or a lyric to be composed to, submit ONE (that's one, folks) on this thread. ..unless you meant to have anyone do any of the songs...but with a PM to the author and permission, that's basically what can ALWAYS be done, challenge or no challenge. For now, l think we should probably stick to the one we already have, or we'll be changing our minds too much. I'm compiling the selection poll today and posting it tomorrow. I'll set it up so anyone can vote, whether they participate or not, and voters can choose up to three selections. This would be a good time to catch up on listening to the MP3s and re-reading the lyrics. Today's the last day for submissions. Good luck!
