Hi Calvin I'm so glad you like it -- though I daresay I was surprised to see it, when my bleary-eyes this morning THOUGHT they read "CAT sketch" in the Whats Going On box, and I was prepared to see a drawing of Iron Head! Anyhoo, this was done as a surprise for Calvin's birthday. I figured, how many times does the poor guy have to flaunt that six-pack before someone immortalizes him in a drawing?! We'll be working on a series of nudes next -- LOL!! Hope you all enjoy it! Beth

Isn't that a Ted Nugent song? "I've got Cal Sketch Fever.."
Very nicely done Beth, and thanks Cal for posting it. Both you and Tobias make me want to get my drawing implements back out again. I haven't drawn much of anything since I got my fine arts degree.

Hi Calvin,
Wow…how do people draw like that? It’s a gift to be able to “see” that way.
Beth, you do an awesome job here! Is that done with a pencil?
Thanks for sharing with us, Calvin!

Hi Calvin,
Wow! Well, isn't Ms. Beth a little overachiever! Excellent likeness. So, where's the rest of the picture?

It is a pretty good likeness of Calvin, Beth. There are some slight proportion problems but they are very minor and you got his features dead on so it is easy to recognize him. Your values are pretty strong and it looks like you did it on some kind of brown paper or something like that. You might want to try using a white color pencil for your highlights and the tone of the paper as the mid tone, this would make your sketch really pop. This is something that I have been doing with my own sketches and it is always impressive looking.

Hey Gang,
Wow, didn't expect such a fun response to this! As I'm just starting to get back into drawing, I thought it would be a fun exercise, since his picture was there for the taking!
And thank you so much -- I do actually think I captured a little of what makes Calvin Calvin!
Also, Tobias, GREAT suggestions. I actually did this on white drawing paper -- I think the brown appearance is a function of the photograph. BUT I love the idea of using a warmer tone for the paper then going darker and lighter with the pencils. I mentioned this to my parents this evening (they're both artists), and my dad said he'd use that technique a lot when he was working with pastels...and would use white chalk for the areas he wanted to "pop". So I'm really looking forward to trying that out. BTW, where do you find the proportions off a bit?
Finally, Tom, thank you for even considering me in the same artistic category as Tobias. Talk about FLATTERING!!
Anyhoo, thanks to one and all for your very kind words....
Cheers, Beth

And:
Yes, Kristi, I did use a pencil. I would like to use charcoal next I think....
Also Ricki, as for the rest of the picture, we're still negotiating about that!!
And Randy, you are a PISTOL!
Ciao for now, Beth

Cheers, Beth Well the eyes seem slightly off but I can't quite place it. As for the proportions I believe it is in the chin and forehead, his chin is a tad smaller and his forehead a tad larger, also the top of his head is much rounder and his hair a little higher because at the moment it is flattening out. The most noticeable thing is that his face looks skewed, this is a common thing that happens to artists as they start out but holding up your drawing to a mirror will help you see if you are skewing or not. Like I said that these are minor things I am seeing.

Hey Tobias, Thank you for the input. I still don't know how to quote with that dang blue "Originally Posted by:________________" box, but I'm referring to your points on the proportions. I think you're right on (i.e., I'm right OFF!)...but being a strict amateur, I'll chalk up my mis-matches to "artistic license" ! The mirror idea is a good one too. In one of my art classes, we had to do a self-portrait (I think I had it posted up here for a while) and it looked JUST like me, but something wasn't quite right. WELL, in fact we were USING mirrors (not photos) for our portraits, and I had the mirror propped up at my left, almost like someone might be typing something. SO, upon further investigation....it appeared I had captured myself perfectly...but from an angle just below my chin level -- NOT AT EYE LEVEL!! DUH! Anyway, I do appreciate the tips. Cheers, Beth P.S. I wonder how Calvin will feel about being dissected this way? Ah, he'll probably end up writing a song about it! Thanks again.....gotta get back to the drawing board and all that!

Wow - I'm impressed, Beth. That's a great likeness. I guess the apple doesn't fall far from the tree... I would think hair would be a hard thing to do well - but it looks very realistic in your drawing. Thanks for putting this up - very cool! Scott

Hey Scooter, Thanks for your compliments, it's very flattering. As for the drawing, it was a fun exercise for me. And yes, the hair was tricky, since it's a lighter tone than the paper. Tobias has given me some good tips though, so the next time I brave a portrait, I'll be sure to post it to see what you all think. For the record, the REST of Calvin was a pleasure to work on ! Thanks again, Beth P.S. I'm surprised you had the wherewithal to type even one word, after likely wading thru my novella critique on Mentor!!

Hi Kaley, Boy, I'd almost forgotten about this...I was coming over here to check out Calvin's and my respective FROG shots!! So thank you! I certainly don't have the technical skills Tobias has, but I think it turned out okay...and the important thing is the birthday boy was happy with it, so I'm good. Thank you for being so nice.... Beth
