Banana Strings
I love bananas. They're so healthy and full of vitamins. I like them just after they've turned from green to yellow. That's when they're nice and firm and most flavorful.
Of course, it never fails that one day they're absolutely perfect and then the next day, they're too ripe. I have 5 more in there like that, now. I just ate one. It tasted ok. It was slightly "riper" than I normally like them but they don't taste too bad. Also, it's this stage where they begin to show "bruises". I definitely won't eat that part. I cut that off. I figure if it's bruised, then that's nature's way of telling me to stay away from that particular section.
The other thing that bothers me when they get "too ripe" like that is the banana strings. You know they're between the banana and the peel. Most of the time the strings stay stuck to the banana and not to the peel. I hate those things.
Today, I thought I'd gotten all the strings off, but wouldn't you know during the next to the last bite of banana one of those wretched banana strings fell onto my lip. YUCK!
That's why banana eating for me will remain a private matter-there's no way I could eat a banana in public because I don't want folks to know I have this phobia about banana strings. Ok. Maybe it's not a phobia as much as it's a dislike. A STRONG dislike.

LOL, Tricia - now I can never eat another banana. Oh well, I'm not too big on them anyway... Yes, banana strings - never thought much about them but I can see them in my minds eye.... So I'll get even by sharing one of mine - whenever I crack an egg, there is a little white glob always stuck to the yolk. That thing gives me the creeps Scott

I know exactly what you mean, Scott. I always wonder if that's a chicken embryo and it sort of gives me the willies. LOL!

As a side note to the banana strings...
Donovan has a song called "Mellow Yellow" I think in the late 60s or early 70s... The concept (as I've heard it) is that smoking those "strings" would cause a person to experience a marjiuna related state of euphoria.... whether this is pure balderdash or there is something to it, it seem people have found a use for the wretched things... or at least had lol... i knew there was a reason i prefer bananas foster...thx Tricia... Derek, back in the old lifeguarding years, we were quite resourceful, you can roll, er, um, smokeable things in a dried banana leaf and cut strips of the same leaf and tie the strips around it in two or three places then you remove the tie as it has smoked down that far, only necessary if you happen to be out of rolling papers that is, I like Clinton, didn't inhale much...ha ... thank God i survived my youth ... moker

Hey Moker Wow that does sound rather resourcful ... My dad gave me a lot of stories surrounding ideas of illicit drug use, might be why I never tried them lol (Though I was all around that certain unmentionable substance you mentioned while growing up). Some the things were just plain whacky... sniffing glue etc... , but one that was actually kinda interesting was a certain type of flower seed... To be more specific Morning Glories "Heavenly Blues" and "Pearly Gates" aptly named as they were apperently hallucigenic if ingested after 24 hours of soaking... Boy the things people do to escape reality lol... Derek

I knew I didn't like those strings for some reason. They're more wicked than I even imagined.

Hi Tricia. What a funny string. I mean thread. I like bananas at exactly the same stage of ripeness as you. and yes, they change the very next day. So i guess you could cut em all up when they're perfect and put em in a banana pudding with nilla wafers and whipped cream----yum. but don't try and serve it later if any's left over. yuck. (oh, btw, before cutting them up be sure and take off their string bikinis first) sorry that's what i thought the thread was gonna be about.

Oh, no ma'am. I haven't used the words "string bikini" since I was like 12.

Tricia, as much as I love you, I cannot help but say that you have entirely too much free time on your hands.
Although, truth be told, the banana strings idea would make a really cool funny children's song.....

Actually, Sam, I work 12 hour shifts so I don't have enough time on my hands. There are just some things that annoy me severely. Banana strings happen to be one of them.

Hi Tricia,
Very interesting article on banana strings. I used to be bothered by those too but ever since a cousin told me that the fibers in those banana strings are good for the digestive system, I now regard them on a more neutral level. If they're stuck on the banana, sometimes I don't take them off anymore.
Sam's suggestion is worth considering, maybe even turn the banana strings into a musical theme?
Talking about eggs, most Americans who have been to the Philippines consider our "Balut" repulsive. It's a local delicacy, a duck egg that's usually cooked around 14-18 days after it's laid so there is actually a duck embryo inside. We eat it to revitalize ourselves after a long day's work. My apologies to those with a vivid imagination.
Dennis

Oh, I'm sorry, I was just kiddin'......I know that you're a nurse, and that kind of career is very demanding....the idea for a children's song would be funny, though...

A friend told me to eat bananas because they have potassium. I ate one last night.
