Ok here’s a little something to get your brain going and hopefully sort out the people who really do know their music from those that know how to Google wink Your task is to name songs where the title is exactly the same as that of a well known movie of book?

Title songs of movies don’t count so for example, The Sound of Music, Born Free or Jailhouse Rock would not be allowed.

If the song is about the book or story (or refers to it) you get 1 point, if the song just shares the same title you get 2 points.

Here’s a couple of each type to get you going:

Breakfast At Tiffany’s – Deep Blue Something (1 point)
Wuthering Heights – Kate Bush (1 point)

American Pie – Don Maclean/Madonna (2 points)
That’s Entertainment – The Jam (2 points)

I just know you guys are going to be great at this, so let’s have them!

Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band

Across the Universe

I think these fall into a gray area. Yes, they were title songs of movies but they were not written to be title songs of movies. They came out in advance of the movies.....

Scott, I’m feeling generous so you can have the points.

Swanee – you can have a point for comedy value

Hi Michele, the song title should be the same as that of a film or book, but so that it’s not included as part of the film. Here’s another example.

Pretty Woman was a song by Roy Orbison and I’m sure you know the that there is also a film called Pretty Woman starring Tom Cruise and Julia Roberts - The film and the song are not related (2 points)

Stand By Me is another example of a film coming after the song.

This is worth 2 points. Here's a link. Jim is making a name for himself as a songwriter and performer. I used to work with him at ENSONIQ. Peter Pan starts after the "toysRus" humor.

"The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance" by Frankie Laine was never used in the movie.
Alice Cooper recorded a song called "The Man With The Golden Gun".

Movie and book titles have a lot in common with song titles. Both are trying to "hook" the audience. they are also a good place to start if you are looking for song material. Lines in movies and books are also happy hunting grounds. Wasn't the song "There is no Arizona" taken from a line spoken by Kathy Bates in the movie Dolores Claiborn?

I read the book before I wrote the song, but I used William Least Heat Moon's book title in my song "Blue Highways". The book chronicles his trip across America, driving on the roads least traveled and my song is a tribute to his journey.

You mean like "Woodstock." I don't think Joni Mitchell's song ever appeared in the movie of the same name.

Just thought I'd mention that the film is starring Richard Gere, not Tom Cruise wink

And that's my contribution to the thread, as I can't think of any film or book right now! Though I am currently writing a song called "Happy go lucky", which is also the title of a current British film (the song isn't related to the film), so who knows, forward a few years when the song has become a hit (yeah, right! crazy) and we could include it on this list wink

Well, I saw the film like 10 times when it came out (I was a teenage girl then) and I knew for sure I didn't have a crush on Tom Cruise lol
