Compose an instrumental rock piece with at least lead and rhythm guitar. The lead instrument should be playing the melody. You can add keyboard/organ, bass and drums if you like. It can be any kind of rock, including old school rock and roll. No vocal tracks for this one. If you have one already created please feel free to post it. Have fun!

It's high time someone revived the lost genre of instrumental rock. I can't remember one off the top of my head that's charted since the 70's. But they still populate my iPod...from "Sleepwalk" to "Wipeout" to Billy Preston's "Outta Space" and Edgar Winter's "Frankenstein".
I guess this is why we have three Lyrics Forums.

Oh, I remember Wipeout. Walk Don't Run was popular. Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass had a lot of hit instrumentals. Bully, Bully. (There were no real lyrics just a chorus of Bully, Bully.) Baby Elephant Walk (Pop Music), Classical Gas, Duelin' Banjos (Not rock)
I think there really is room for instrumentals. A lot of people put up with the vocals of a song and are really just waiting for the cool licks, solos and instrumental bridges so they can get out their air instruments and play along.

Probably does not really fit your criteria, the "melody" is on the weak side -- really just excuse to jam, I guess. From Nov 2006: http://soundclick.com/share?songid=4725322 . Jam Track from FDP's Hcochoa and I added two guitars. Kevin

Hello Jean ... Nice of you to invite the instrumentals. Since rock and blues are related, I'd like to share something I've done. Check out "Party At The River" on my MySpace page. Hopefully, the melody (or, at least the chorus) has a singable sound to you. http://www.myspace.com/dennisfullertonThanks, Fully

Very cool, Kevin. I think you fulfilled the criteria. You probably could have just repeated the main theme one more time at the very end, but it rocked as far as I am concerned. Nicely done.

I agree with Kevin, Dennis. Nicely done. Great groove. I also listened to "Things" and especially enjoyed that one.
Who needs those silly ol' vocals anyway. LOL.

Any more submissions in the works? Please let me know if you are still working on one and we'll hold the next challenge off a little.
OR do you guys think the challenges should be an open ended thing?

I'm recording one now. It'll probably be done tomorrow. I'm writing it DURING the recording process. I just made a drum track first and went from there...I'm still re-writing (or re-recording, can't remember which). Another fun challenge...thanks Jean! Well, IMO, starting a new challenge shouldn't keep anyone from still contributing to the previous ones.

Perfect B-movie idea with a great B-movie theme! Cool and very authentic. Nice effects. Worked for me.
Percussion stuff was well done, also.

LOL, Mark, LOL! Spaghetti Western meets Surf City. Love the sound effects. My 2 year old grand daughter loves it and she is dancing excitedly around the room. She keeps making me play it over and over.

I love watching 2-year-old girls dance...reminds me of those days with my daughters, lots of fun and laughter. Thanks Jean. And, double whammy--Kevin likes my drums! Woot!! I have finally arrived.

Very cool! Although the drums are a little loose, I luv it! It's Apache meets "The Good, The Bad and The Ugly" meets the BBC Sound Effects Library! Enjoyed the guitar tone. Very original! Ben

almost missed this one too, yikes! Here is a track from my album "Live In 2007." I have a ton of instrumentals but none recorded ... except this. It's titled "Impromptu Improv In A" because we literally made it up on the fly. I admit the bass and drums are very repetitive, and basically is a guitar solo. My band usually warms up with tracks such as this at our concerts. I've found it's a great way to get the band - and audience - into "concert mode." http://discrevolt.com/nick -click on track #14 ps: you have to scroll to arrive at track 14, and it's a freebie so don't worry about logging into the site ... edit: hmmm, I'm reconsidering this entry, it doesn't really have a melody. I won't delete this post but I promise my "challenge #3" entry will be much more pertinent

Hi, Nick. The streaming track cuts out just as the guitar solo is beginning. What I heard of it sounded good.

hmm, you probably have to download it. It's free to download. They're all free samples to click, but download the entire track, and you can listen that way. I guess.

I personally LOVE instrumentals. One of my favorite nights in the studio ever..... IF I ever get a pop hit, this is what I'd be doing with my time & money, well besides sharing it with you's Grand Central Groove © Caro/Oberhammer www.substudiomusic.com/GrandCentralGroove.mp3

Hi again, Nick. I had to sign up for an account to download it. Then it took me to a page where it said purchase next to the song. Then I closed the page and clicked on your original link above. Then I could finally download it.
Maybe on the free listens, you could post them at soundclick or on your myspace page.
Great playing. I enjoyed it.

This is more jazz or jazz-rock fusion than straight rock but the trumpet/sax sounds killer. I assume it is live (why did I even ask?). You really should think about joining TAXI cause this song would be perfect for a music library that licenses to TV/Film projects. I can so see this in a movie. Keep this as an instrumental. IT DOESN'T NEED LYRICS. As usual, you never cease to amaze. I was thinking about posting some instrumental tracks but I already have lyrics for them that I have yet to lay down. I thought I might get some production feedback if I posted them here, since almost NOBODY is commenting on my songs in the mp3 forums anymore.

This one is from a year or so ago.....a surf song called Stocking Island (located in the Exuma Islands of the Bahamas). Stocking Island This is smoking hot. Man, there is SO MUCH TALENT HERE. I love the harmonies on the guitars and the panning effects. I do that with a lot of my world music instrumentals as well, with ouds and lutes and bouzoukis instead of guitars. Excellent playing.

Thanks for the kind words about Stocking Island. Did you notice Bruce playing an electric with an Ebow towards the end kinda in the background?

Hi Jean, You want it you got it!, check out my myspace page. Most of my music is instrumental rock with the focas on leads. http://myspace.com/rosariopanzarella Check out Coffee, and Time Traveler to pump your blood or slow it up with Lonley Heart. Hope everyone like it, all the songs are free downloads too Rosario Panzarella Compose an instrumental rock piece with at least lead and rhythm guitar. Well, I could toss out "The Fields (of Balbriggan)" There is a Mark Knopfler-soundtrack-style guitar playing the melody. There is a rhythm guitar, but the main rhythm instrument is a cittern - it's sort of like an acoustic 12 string, but with only 10 strings. This track can be found at www.soundclick.com/tomtracy

I don't know if Rock Creek would be considered Rock exactly (what do I know?) but it sure is a pretty composition.

Hello Everyone, I suppose I'll throw my 2 cents in . . . I've always heard Guitarists love to play in Am, so I wrote a song called 'Minor Study'. We recorded the Rhythm Bed here, in Indianapolis, and I sent it to a dear friend in Connecticut, Jay 'Jesse' Johnson. It starts out innocent enough, but half-way through, the Rock & Roll Beast rears his Ugly Head . . . The song is on MySpace. Hope you like it, Robin James Minor Study
