What the hell is a harpoon? I just listened to this song and wondered how the hell Kris got away with it. I thought that a harpoon was a three sided hook that you throw at a whale. Now if he is talking about a harmonica then why not say something like "I pulled my old harp out of my dirty red bandanna"? Maybe I'm missing something, but I never heard anyone call a harp a harpoon. Just a thought. Ben

Ben:
I guess we're just gonna have to ask Kris to get an answer. I've heard the term "harpoon" used to describe the harmonica before but I don't think I heard it until after he made it popular.
Interesting. Hey Kris...

Thanks Dave, I've never heard someone call a harp a harpoon. If I was to ask my harp playing friend to "pull out your harpoon" he would look at me funny and probably laugh as if it were a joke. Maybe I just have too much free time on my hands to think of these things. Ben

Maybe it's a real harpoon...those hooks could turn a white bandana red...

I always wondered about that one too, Harpoon is a beer around here, but I don't think they started until at least 20 years after that song was written.

From "Songfacts":
The line, "I pulled my Harpoon from my dirty red bandana" can be interpreted 2 ways. The more sanitized version considers the "Harpoon" as a slang word for harmonica. The second interpretation considers it a hypodermic needle, since a bandana was often used to tie off the arm before an addict shot up.

I'll go with the second definition, at least with Janice's version.

I like the three sided hook that you throw at a whale myself.

Why would you give heroin to a whale?

I may be wrong about that. A three sided hook is a Gaff. A Harpoon is like a spear shot from a contraption to catch whales. I would give a whale plenty of heroin if I was about to shoot him with a harpoon.

I think Kris made a few "Gaffs" as he staggered onstage at the CMA awards in 71'. or was it 72'.
