Joice,
Thanks for listening. I'm not sure if Ruby should be going out on the town, since she's stuck in a cage. Hmmm.. I'll have to think on that. Sometimes these little lyrics come into my head and I can't rid myself of them. I just wrote this down as I heard it playing in my head, but didn't bother to ask myself if it made sense. I'm glad you enjoyed it though. Hey Wendy, We all know it's about a mouse...but the lyric works really well when I picture Ruby as a person. In fact, that's what makes it so great for me...there are a LOT of Rubys in this world, feeling mousy, wanting to squeal, feeling like they live in a cage, angry, wanting to bust loose...and your lyric says something nice to them, believes in them, encourages them. That's my favorite part about it, that double-meaning. Oh and I wouldn't send another vocal...this one sits well now with just that touch of reverb. It was just a little too much when I had added more.

Hey Mark and Wendy
This is an awesomely fun little song. It's quite sweet and as Mike mentioned it has a real classic feel to it. Mark you are making us all look bad lol. Brother you have some real awesome talent in making music I am so jealous, but at least I have some years ahead of me to get better. Being probably one of the youngsters around here at 32. Wendy you have a real talent for writing and this one is just perfect as it is. Very cool the two of you I hope to see more like this one! Derek

Hi, Loved it all, very pleasing to the ears. Sounds like something I'd want to hear on the radio. A very sweet sound. I'd be proud of a song like this. Calvin http://www.soundclick.com/bands/0/calvinstewart

Ricki, I'll let you have Mermaids if you let me download your song that's posted over there in the Mentor forum. It made me cry last night and inspired me to write another song. Folks go check out Ricki's song. If it does not get picked Ricki, post it over here...cause it's awesome.

I'm not always good at checking on threads I've already commented on but I kept seeing this one being bumped by people I knew had already listened - so I knew something was going on Love the new mix - has more life to it! Scott

Hey Derek,
Thanks for listening to this. Glad you liked it. It sure was fun and Mark did a great job. I still haven't listened to your new one yet. I was on briefly last night but couldn't stay on long enough to listen and post. The weekend is coming, so I will have more time!

Calvin,
Thanks for dropping by. Say, have you ever recorded your "lady who died in the trailer park" song? I might have missed it. That was a pretty funny lyric. I'm glad you liked Ruby and I am proud of it (her). I sent the MP3 to a few of my friends and family and they all liked it too.

Thanks for coming back Scott. Yes, you can hear Mark better and also some of the subtle licks on the balalika (I'm not sure I've spelled that correctly). BTW, I've listed to Bigger Than Me several times, that's a really nice song. I haven't managed to go over there and post a comment yet, but I will.

Sorry to make you join the BCS, Mark. Sometimes I will log on in the evening, but won't actually get to listen or post..depending on dishes, homework, potty training, etc..I'm always summoned to dance and sing along with Barney too. I can't wait until Scout grows out of Barney. Rebecca grew tired of him fairly early on. I recall her telling me on day in a disgusted voice, "Barney's just a puppet." After that, she didn't like him anymore.

Thanks Wendy & Kevin. My head is so big right now I can't stand it! We're on the road this weekend but when I get back home I'll see if I can figure out how to make it happen. I am sleep deprived. Later.

I wanted to listen to this again - wow. It holds up for me. Mesmorizing. Everything works - vocals, lyrics and music. Outstanding in every way.

I had missed this one earlier, it's really a gem of a song. Beautiful vocal and the tracks were excellent. The writing was simply perfect to the subject. Made me think of "Maisy",(the cartoon mouse) though it's a different musical style. To that point, I thought the mix for a TV use would have the vocal more forward sans reverb. I hope you combine your talents again, could be the start of something very good. Best of luck with a very fine collaboration.

Tom,
Thanks for coming back to listen again. I burned this to a CD and was driving around listening in my car today. My girls were really enjoying it. I've finally done a song that my 10 year-old likes. That says something, since she hates all my songs!

Pete,
Thanks for listening and your kind words. I added a bit of reverb to the vocal track I sent to Mark. He tried to back it off a bit, but I think that caused it have a bit of an echo. So that was a learning experience for me.

Well...I recorded this in blue jeans and a bathrobe...I remember having to get up several times to let the dog in and out, and I made coffee, too. But man, if that's work then I like it more than play. Thanks for all the nice comments everyone. Hey Wendy...maybe you should send me a dry vocal after all. Seems to be the only thing that stands out for people. If you go to megaupload.com and follow the easy upload instructions (put both our email addresses in), you can send huge WAV files for free.

Hi Wendy and Mark,
Great job from both of you.The instrumental fit the vocals and the vocals fit the lyrics and the lyrics fit the....... For me, I'd like to see "And blue skies ahead" in all the chorus. I'd also like to hear an instrumental break, and another Chorus to end it. Of course that could be me wantin' to hear more of the song cause I like it so well. Rock on Ruby...

Wendy and Mark: I am using this song as my Monday song. When I get to work no matter what mood, I put this one on and it picks me up a bunch. It really brightens me up. Wow! It just chuggs along and before I know it I got a smile on my face. The song is really good lyricwise and musicwise. And then your fabulous wrap around your ears voice. Your voice sounds wonderful (feels like KD Lang - gives me chills) and Mark's cool mandolin lines in the background. COmpletely original anf fresh. Again wonderful production work. I mean I really don't think any one of the big record companies could capture the priceless quality of this gem of a song. Well my adjective-meter's needle is pegged. Gotta stop and listen again.
Regards...paul

Wendy, speaking of ten year olds ---- I started songwriting to write songs that my ten year old grand-daughter could sing on a demo cd. (Hannah Montana sort of songs). I have not really succeeded yet, but am plugging away. I am inspired by many of the songs I find here - and by this one in particular. Exceptional.

Mark,
I will try to get a new vocal to you. It might be this weekend before I get to it. I'll try to send a WAV file. I haven't tried it before so I can't say it will make it.

John, Thanks for listening. Those are some good suggestions. Mark suggested a bridge. I told him I will have to think on it because I maxed-out my mouse vs. girl vs. color + upbeat formula with this.
