Every Now-&-Then, along comes a Movie that has a New Fable in it & a Nice "Moral" as-well. (And..is Good Clean FUN!)
Such is the case with "PENELOPE", Directed by Mark Palansky, & fresh from "Type A Films", Reese Witherspoon's very-own Production Co.
Christina Ricci (Brilliantly) plays Penelope Wilhern...The Unlucky (to have a Pig's Snout) daughter of Jessica & Franklin (Caterine O'Hara & Richard E. Grant) & under a Family Curse. It's only broken when she "finds true love with one who will love her faithfully"...
Endless rounds of Well-Heeled Suitors come-&-go..(SO rapidly the family butler wears Tennis Shoes to catch up with them & have them sign a Confidentiality Agreement!)
The Years of Cloister-dom in the Family Manse lead Penelope to don a Winter's Scarf & head off to The Big City..in-cog-snout-o!
There she befriends locals like Jack The Barman (Richard Leaf), has her first-ever Draft Beer, & meets up with Street-Savvy Annie (Reese Witherspoon) who rides her around on her motorcycle, helping her hide out from Over-Helpful Mom & Dad.
A Paparazzi-of-sorts, (Peter Dinklage as Lemon) is pursuing her via a Suitor-with-Hidden-Camera-Up-His-Sleeve (James McAvoy as Max)..with $5K at stake to get a PHOTO of the "Pig-Monster" for the Tabloids. ("Artist-Rendering" shows her with Fangs!) There are a LOT of Fun Plot-Twists-&-Turns before the (You Guessed It) Happy Ending!
I happily give it a "7 1/2-Outta-10" & recommend taking kids 6th-grade-on-up to it...(Or ANYONE with a Self-Esteem Issue). It stays Perky all nearly-2-Hours'-Worth...SOME is Total Hilarious-Spoofiness; some's on the Serious-Side when it's "Moral Time".
It's been A WHILE since I heard an Audience CLAP after a Preview, but at this one, I DID...& It Deserved It, every bit! Nice Original Music by Joby Talbot, too!
JMO...Keep-or-Sweepit! Big Hugs, Stan

Bit of a Tough Question, BUT I gotcha an Answer:
DEPENDS what ya Wanna See, BUT I'll TRY to List these in a Pecking Order of Best-to-Least-Best, JMO, Overall: 1) Real-Life "Message Film": Diving Bell & The Butterfly 2) Historical "Re-Enactment" Drama: The Other Boleyn Girl 3) Entertaining "Fable w/a Moral" Film: Penelope
Penelope's the only 1 of all-3 that's got a Lot of Humor in it, tho, so these go from Saddest to Sad to Funny. SO..if it's Laughs ya Want, do these in Reverse-Order!
All felt "Worth The Loot"..or they'd have gotten 6-or-less Ratings from me.
Big Guy-Hugs, Stan

"Money is worst reason to be motivated NOT to do anything. Instead of letting those concerns STOP you, use it to motivate yourself to find an alternate solution that bypasses money. You will soon find that your own resourcefulness is worth far more than a pile of paper money." –Brian Austin Whitney
