Success is...
Being woken up by a vicious panic attack, and having the adrenalin surge relieve a back spasm, to be able to walk right then!
Be careful what you wish for, (to be able to move again soon), as the solution could also be nasty to go through. But now? Thankful for the attack. Weird how that worked!

Success, according to my two-year-old son, Nathan, was "making cookies in my heart for my brother"--who had been pounding on him in rough brother sibling rivalry all day, and even biting him hard enough to leave teeth marks.

Success is having a world class playwright whom you haven't seen in 20 years call and ask you to write the songs for his next play...which will be a musical.

Oh Bobbie you lucky lady, how much fun that would be to write songs for a musical (libretto) I love writing in that style so if you ever need help/ideas or extra writers, I'd be glad to help. I notice in alot of musicals they write in a more freeform style sometimes using lots of rhymes. I have several lyrics in that genre. Have fun!!!!

Two adolescent siblings leading out and performing together in the praise band started by their parents---two months after burying their Father.
Their mother says that she is no longer necessary. They run the praise team all by themselves.
(I had the honor of showing them how to do a home recording yesterday---enough to get them started anyway.)

Success is the tears of joy in the eyes of an elderly relative when you take time from your busy schedule to visit them in the nursing home. Success is also the warm glow it gives you in return..to know that your remembrance meant so much. That hit me, as my mother was in rehab/nursing home, and before she saw me, I could sometimes see a bored, down look. Then she would see her only son and just beam! I would walk her around in her wheelchair, and play the Steinway baby grand piano for her. Other people wold tell her she is lucky to have a son that will play piano for her. She would just smile, and say, "he always played for me. The house was like a morgue when he moved out". So, I play for her as often as I can. She's home now, but no piano over there. I should get something to play there. You're post has me now thinking that. Thank you for your inspiring words. John

Wow, Bobbie. So true.
Any joy one can bring to an elderly relative or friend is indeed a success. Nursing homes can be such sad places.

Bobbie, I know exactly what you mean. Every Saturday morning in the winter and about once a month in the summer a group of us Oak Park area musicians play at the Oak Park Arms which is an old folks' home. They have a great sitting room which is ideal for acoustic instruments and we have a regular fan base there of folks who absolutely love it when we come out to play for them. It really is my favorite place to play acoustically, and bringing happiness to the old folks is a great joy to me, as well.
We have been playing there for about three or four years, now and have seen a few of our favorite people come and go in that short time. Recently, a gentleman named Jimmy Burton passed away, but he loved coming in and listening to us. He was a jazz and pop singer from the 40's and early 50's and some of his recordings were put on a cd where we had a chance to listen to him. He was a fabulous singer, with a warm tenor voice.
We were there playing one time on the same day that a lady had just moved into the home that morning and she was terribly upset about having to leave her home and move into a managed care facility. Her aide brought her in to listen to us play. She was crying when she came in and thought her world was coming crashing down, but by the end of our performance she was smiling and becoming comforted to find that the facility was a really good place with people who really cared about the residents. She is a regular attendee now and she settled in nicely. I can't help but believe we helped in making the transition a little easier. I know this a long post for this topic, sorry, but I echo Bobbie's earlier post, so my paraphrasing her sentiment is:
Success is bringing joy to anyone, but especially the very young and the elderly.

Thanks John, Iggy & Jack... I am glad that one touched you as well. I just got back to TN after driving up to MI to spend the holidays with my sister and her grown children and grandkids. We celebrated Christmas early...so my sis and I spent much of the Christmas week doing things we seem to usually put off...visiting those few remaining relatives from our parents' generation. We drove over to Muskegon to see our dad's baby sister who is now in a care center with the early stages of Alzheimers. Her devoted husband who is also in his late 80's drives over there daily to feed her and spend his whole day with her. She recognized us even though it has probably been 10-15 years since we last saw her. One of our cousins who lives not far away met us there. Our aunt would look at my cousin and say..."you sure look like Lois". And Lois would say..."that's because I am Lois". It breaks your heart to see what that disease does to folks. But our aunt and uncle were SO glad to see us and be able to spend a half a day catching up. Then on Christmas day..we went the other direction to spend the day with two elderly aunts of my sister's husband...both in their 90's. Both of them are still mentally sharp...but physically slipping a bit. Just knowing that we chose to spend our holiday with them meant so much. Our little remembrances were humble but they loved them all the same. One of the best evenings, however, was when we invited three elderly ladies who have been lifelong friends of our family, over for dinner. All of them are are in their late 70's to late 80's with grown children who live in distant places...and all of them were alone for the holidays. We knew that all of them had connections that they were not aware of...so it was TRULY fun to bring all those connections out into the open and let them bask in the joy of fond memories. One was a distant cousin of our dad's whose mother had been a rather famous minister when I was a small child. She was not aware that one of the other ladies had been a parishoner in her mother's church for several years. The other lady was the mother of my best male friend in HS. A beautiful woman even now...she has been the recipient of numerous proposals from male admirers whose spouses had passed away...including the father of one of the other ladies. All in all...it was the warmth of being able to help make others truly happy this holiday that was the highlight of my own. Too often we forget these older folks when it really does not take much to make them very happy. I know we all get busy...but family is SO important. It's hard for me to understand how their own children don't care enough to include their mothers in their holiday plans. I sure cannot judge anyone else, that's not my business...but for me, holidays are all about family. One evening, my sister and I invited all of our cousins over for an evening of playing table games and reminiscing. This time...we even remembered to turn on a tape recorder. Oh my...the stories some of them remembered!! LOL I never did all that stuff!! LOL Well, maybe I did. Sorry to go on...but this year really reminded me that giving of one's time is often the very best gift of all. Jack...I can just imagine how much happiness you and the other musicians bring to those folks at the Oaks. Bless you!! Happy Holiday Hugs, Bobbie
