I think it was a jellow jacket, Jean. I'm not sure. I really couldn't get up close enough and even when I zoomed the shots on the computer couldn't tell much about it. That spider's body alone is about 1 1/2" long. That's a big one!

cool pics Tricia,
Looks like the spider I saw out near my cabin a couple years ago... bright yellow and yeah....big. I looked it up on the web..... Think they called it a Yellow Garden Spider (how imaginative LOL) They said it wasn't poisonous.... but considering the size of it...I imagine the bite would still hurt...so I gave it a wide clearance

I am not afraid of those spiders. It's the brown house spiders-the generic ones that have biten me three times since I've lived here. Those are the ones that I don't like. Of course, I'm terrified of brown recluse and black widows but they are rare, thank heavens. I keep my shoes in boxes, hoping that one day I won't put my foot in and surprise one.

Also, those kind tend to stay outdoors whereas the brown house spiders think it's their house, too.

Beautiful and intimidating at the same time. All of the shots I have seen of yours are so well taken. Could I ask what kind of camera you have? If you use a traditional camera and that spider is still in your back yard ( assuming here ) I think it would be cool to take a shot with a fish eye lens. That would be awesome.

I only use an automatic Olympus D-40 Zoom. That's pretty idiot proof. I still have trouble with macro. One of these days, I really AM going to get that manual out and read it. What's a fish eye lens? Is that a macro lens? Just curious.

Well in traditional photography a Fish eye lens is a special refracting lens to cause a sort of forced perspective in the dead center of your shot. The best example I can think of is when you look at your reflection in the back of a highly polished spoon what you see there is more or less the same effect as a fish eye lens.

Tricia,
Great photos of a great spider! I love those orb weavers - they come in such pretty colors and make gorgeous webs. I don't get to see them very often around here. I used to have a fear of spiders, but after taking pictures of them I have come to appreciate their beauty and skill and no longer fear them.

Used to be one of those outside of my parents' house in Tampa, I named him Fred.
Think we called 'em banana spiders...

It's still out there. That's just the biggest spider, I've ever seen. He's even larger now, than a week ago. He saw me looking at him again yesterday and started "rocking" the web with his body. I don't know if that's some sort of scare tactic or what.
