Shania markets herself as a centerfold -- a beautiful, yet unattainable woman. And her songs are full of the message that she's in charge of her own sexuality. You ain't gettin' none unless I say so. You know, that don't impress me much... Young women and lots of others who are trying to figure out relationships respond to that. And guys just say hootchie mama! Something for everyone.
I'm sure not knocking her success or her message, for that matter. I just think it's transparently marketing, not musical or even lyrical sensibility or a unique talent. Alison Krauss could sing anything and make you a fan without ever seeing her. Or Gillian Welch or Dolly or Emmy Lou or Iris Dement... there's a THERE there.
Different tastes...
Oh, Alison comes from the bluegrass world and doesn't write much of her own music, although one of her guitar players writes quite a bit, I think.

Who's "sexier" Allison Kraus or Shania Train....no question....
If you understand the difference between "Sexy" and "pretty" then you understand why Ms. Kraus is the winner.
Many of us find a soft spoken, intelligent, amazingly talented woman who also has a winsome quality that could charm the Devil himself, more appealing than a ditzy chick who can kind of sing and struggles to speak in complete sentences and peoples her videos with boys instead of men....well......Figure it out kids !

I love a gentlemanly disagreement.
Ironically, I am not a particular fan of Ms. Twain's. I don't own any of her records and probably never will. Yet, I still respect them for what they are, and, in disagreement with you, I think there is something there. I do NOT find them to be typical Nashville cookie-cutter stuff. Ear candy? Definitely! Nuttin' wrong with that. I remember, in my sallow youth, thinking that the Dave Clark Five were pretty cool.
I have observed the way my teenage daughter reacts to Shania's music, and I have seen enough to convince me that the woman has a message that resonates with HER audience. That is not an easy thing.
I'm pretty sure that you and I aren't her audience.
Everything is relative. Compared to Aretha, Shania is pretty lame. But compared to what Nashville is churning out these days, she's solid.</font> Ha Hah Ha! Dave Clark 5 WERE Cool! You just lost your youtful exerberence... Heh Heh Heh.

We are going on about Shania's beauty. I thought it is a prerequisite that our Major Artists be good looking. Nothing new there..

I wasn't going to join this debate.... (yeah...that's what they all say... ![[Linked Image]](http://www.justplainfolks.org/ubb/rolleyes.gif) Bob... I'm right with you. Not a bad singer.... but certainly nothing great to me. And as far as a female agenda to her music.... it's very very backward. I used to cringe every time I heard Any Man of Mine. This gal wants her man to tell her she looks good even if she doesn't, (let her walk out the door thinking she looks fine???) Be willing to wait and wait for her (didn't that trend go out of style too???) and even if she burns dinner....not just eat it happily...but ask for more??? With all due respect....and as delicately as I can say it... BULSH! Any man of mine who did those things would NOT remain a man of mine! And frankly.... I really liked What Made You Say That? and think it's a much better song than a lot of the later ones she and Mutt wrote. (but then I don't often agree with the majority....so it doesn't surprise me LOL) ------------------ Harriet http://www.soundclick.com/bands/9/harrietamesmusic.htm

Hey Duke, it's all good. Everybody has their likes and dislikes and fortunately, there's enough good music to go around for most everybody's tastes. I don't dislike Shania and some of her songs are enjoyable. She's obviously beautiful and sexy. And I understand why she's as popular as she is but at the same time, I don't understand if that makes any sense. If you ever get a chance to see the CMT Insider where she is interviewed (and you probably will since it's already been on about 5-6 times since I first saw it back in the fall), you'll see what I mean about the way she answers questions. Not that it really matters all that much. It's just something that bugs me. Other people probably don't even give it a thought. Maybe I'm giving it too much thought... Yes, she's an addle head, and her leftist antigun bigotry is truly abhorant.

Addle head = Airhead. (People who think with emotion and not logic)
You know, the kind of people that advocate that women should be disarmed and left to fight off rapists/criminals with their bare fists. It's much akin to Feminist socio-political ideology.
They are authority worshippers. They do not trust others with the means of self defense, most notably with firearms, all the while relying on strong father figures (the government) to protect them. They want the state to have a monopoly on firepower.
Sad people really, going through life clamoring for the state to do for them, and for others they don't even know, what they are unwilling or unable to do for themselves.
But...... if you are a wealthy addle head, like Shania, you can always hire an armed bodyguard and the little people be damned!

Hey PogromWright, you just joined yesterday and not one of your posts has anything to do with songwriting or music. You sure do love talking about guns and calling people names, though. Are you a musican? Why are you here?

I hav'nt read the debate much beyond the first post. But Shania Twain looks nice and sounds nice, and Robert John "Mutt" Lange (her husband) must be very happy. Even though wanting is never the same as having. She's penned her own songs and is talented nonetheless. I'm envious people that can do that and score hits.
Lange produced one of my most played record albums, Foreigner 4. I wish critics would state that more.

Are you a musican? Why are you here? Im just sharing an analytical discourse on the intelligence level of a particular artist. In this case it's Shania Twain. She's very controversial. And when those artists open up their political mouths and offend certain freedom loving people, they along with everyone else, should expect a pointed reaction. I am part and parcel of that reaction. By the way, I am a percussionist. I've been playing the drums since Elvis started wearing bell bottoms. I hit hard. I'm a player, writer and Libertarian political activist. I am a Constitutionalist by construction. I'm not for everyone. But I am the perfect package!

Music is a medium just like any other. Even though I may not be so pointed in politics.
The only thing I resent is when celebraties think they can speak for the common citizen.
If the hiearchy can't better protect us from thugs and terrorists, will the celebrities?
I still think Shania Twain is cute and talented. No, not a thought, she is.

WOW... LOTS OF SPARK ON THIS ONE!
"MUTT" LANG is an OUTSTANDING producer. I heard the HUGE HIT he made for another Pop/Country singer, and, mistakenly thought it WAS Shania Twain. Of course, that's ONLY because it sounds EXACTLY like her. (*The chorus was something like "I'm in love with the man") My point is that most radio hits today are "made" by the producer... NOT THE MUSICIAN. "Mutt" could make lots of good singers sound like Shania because he knows exactly how to tweek the knobs to get her signature "sound."
SHANIA FACT: It cost 1.5 MILLION DOLLARS to cross over her first single from the Country to the Pop charts. KACHING!

Shania may be a good looking broad, but only from the ankles up. She has considerably ugly, almost narley looking feet!

Since art can be defined as the quality of communication, I believe an artist is as good as the effect made upon the audience. How does the audience feel when listening or watching Shania? She is very loved. Yes, there are several things which contributed to that mass admiration, (such as Mutt's talent and Shania's looks) but they all came together in an artist's communication that works extremely well for the majority. I applaud any artist that finds a way to touch the hearts of so many. It's a magical combination of songs, production, arrangements, stage presence, PR etc. etc....
