Hi Folks,
So musicians are notoriously night owls. I wondered what the typical musicians eats when they wake up? For example, if you stay up really really late, do you skip breakfast? Do you eat cereal or eggs or other typical breakfast items, or do you eat whatever is normal for that time of day (lunch.. dinner etc..)? I actually do a combination of all of those depending on circumstances. I've had dinner meals at breakfast, and I've skipped many breakfasts (yes.. I know.. that's bad for you.. don't bother with the lecture) but when possible, I try to stay with breakfast foods, even if I get up in the middle of of the day.
So spill the beans.. (unless that is what you are having for breakfast).. .what do YOU eat when you get up? I am going to go have a bowl of raisin bran!

Hi Brian
Rice is the staple food here in our country. But I prefer to eat bread in the morning. 2 slices with peanut butter spread, drink some ice tea and thats make my morning breakfast complete. SOmetimes I skip this routine and prefer to eat later 1 hour before lunch. I dont know why my taste buds do not show any signs of overwhelming fatigability from the same taste of the peanut butter every morning..

Weekdays: Coffee with cream and sugar I know I should do better but the fact is I am just as hungry at lunch time whether I've eaten anything for breakfast or not. And when I eat 3 meals I tend to gain weight. When I try to go with just breakfast and dinner, I get too hungry during the day Weekends: Pancakes, French toast, bacon and eggs, or breakfast burritos, depending on what my wife is in the mood to make. I am up for any of them Scott

I vary it up. Cereal. Bacon, Eggs, Hashbrowns. Waffles. Lox & Bagels. Breakfast Burrito. Omelets. It really depends on my mood. I will occasional skip breakfast if I end up getting up really late and I have to run out for a meeting and it's a different meal time.
I don't like skipping meals though, it can make me cranky.

Hi Brian I am not a creature of habit and like you mix it up depending on what time of day it is how hungry I am and most important what is available at the time.
PS Idea for Mentors song forum. Why not suggest a song title or subject matter, pick a genre and ask JPFs to submit a song within a given time say a week. Choose a song from the entries for a crit. The point of this is to condition people to write a song "to order" in a different style or way they are not used to.. It is relatively easy to write a song of your own choice but another thing to write to order within a timetable as per my suggestion.

I'd be up for that.. but most of the writers there seem pretty rutted in Country-like lyrics. I don't know if it's good for force someone to write something other than what they feel. Maybe we'll start a second program phase for something like that. I know Jean Bullock is doing something like that on the songwriter board. Weekly challenges.

i go through periods of several months at a time, i cycle through the following...
1 - englsh muffin toasted with one tablespoon of peanut butter (not low fat) on each open faced, with a half glass of orange juice.
2 - ego waffles with lite margarine and lite syrup, with a glass of orange juice
3 - chic-fil-a chicken biscuit with a small juice.
on the weekends i sleep in late and don't eat breakfast, but i do get out and have a nice lunch somewhere. but sometimes i have breakfast food for lunch on the weekends.

Back in my bad ol'days I'd still be awake from the night before, and I'd kick off my day with a Bloody Mary and a line of blow. Nowadays,I'll start off with some cereal and fruit, go to my workout at the Y, run my errands, do my computer work, maybe practice a bit, or attempt to write, have a big dinner, then go to my gig. Rinse and repeat.

I don’t eat usually until 4 or 5 in the afternoon when I suddenly realize I’m pretty hungry. Next comes a mad rush to find and buy food any kind of food. From Fast food to the Old Country buffet, or several hot dogs at my local 7-11, I eat what is readily available.
Come home, shower, play music, drink some beer, eat some chips, check out JPF, and go to sleep.
Real healthy huh?

I have kept farmer's hours for the past 14 years, getting up early enough to milk the cows (even though I have never had any cows and never had to milk them). Just became a habit while being city manager in a farming community--everybody else got up early, so I did, too. I consider getting up at 6 a.m. to be sleeping in. (I have not done late-night gigs in years, either. Just too dang clean-living in my old age, I guess.)
My favorite breakfast is a couple of nuked burritos. If I'm on the road, I'll do a standard trucker breakfast instead--eggs, hash browns and toast. Hard for anyone to mess that up. If I skip a meal, it'll be lunch, not breakfast.

Breakfast is suppose to be the most important meal of the day, but usually I can't eat a big meal that early.I mostly will have a bowl of puffed rice and a glass of water.Sometimes I will have a couple of poptarts, love bacon and eggs but takes too much time to make.

I hear you Ev. I used to not bother with fancy breakfasts at all, opting for cereal about 90+% of the time. But my wife likes to make eggs and other stuff even when she's REALLY pressed for time.. so I often go along for the ride! = )

Around here I get requests for peanut butter and applesauce/cinnamon on whole grain toast lots of mornings. That's a complete balanced breakfast with a glass of soy or cow's milk and/or orange juice.
My favorite of course is biscuits and gravy with scrambled eggs and stripples and Orange juice. Usually, I opt for whole grain toast since white flour biscuits ain't that healthy.
Here's some others we like too though:
English peas and white sauce on toast
Oatmeal with pecans and real cane sugar (without the vitamins and minerals removed). Toast with all fruit jelly or preserves.
Croissants with scrambled eggs and stipples inside.
blueberry bagals and low fat cream cheese
grapes, watermellon, avocado, peaches, blueberries, cherries, apples, canteloupe, etc. LOTS of fruit
toasted almonds or pecans and walnuts---lots of nuts for breakfast! They help your heart!
Granola and that Kashi brand bite size slightly sweetened shreded wheat with milk and fruit.
Can you tell breakfast is my FAVORITE meal ----and EARLY!
Vanessa

Well, 99 percent of the time it is cereal and orange juce. Sometimes when my wife is fixing something such as bacon and eggs I will have that. The basic cereals, like Wheaties, Corn Flakes, etc.
Joe you should learn to milk the cows. Back a hundred years ago on the farm I had to milk the cows before I went to school. We had a dog that somehow got trained to bring the cows to the barn named Ted. All I had to do is tell Ted, "Go get the cows". He didn't hesitate.
Don't remember what I had for breakfast in those days. Mostly whatever my mother would fix. That was before running water and electricity on the farm.
My wife is one terrific cook. Today I eat better than most Kings. No kidding.

I read somewhere that the Cereal industry is larger than the Movie and Music industries combined.

One or two eggs cooked on low heat in Olive Oil and with a little garlic, (every other day for the garlic). Whole wheat toast, one slice. Thin good oil butter like product. Half caffeine Dunkin Donuts home brewed coffee, (our own blend to make it light), and a handful of fish oil pills, MSM, Co-Q10, L-Agrenine.(Sp), and Coral Calcium with 73 trace minerals. HMMMM! Those trace minerals are awesome! I may top it all off with a big helping of colon cleanse!
Ahhhhh Breakfast!
Even if I get to sleep by 5 am, I will be up by 9 and will eat then. Usually eat around 9 regarless. If I'm up before that, I will usually just have water and then coffee,,,then cook around 9. Cindy gets fed for all breakfasts. Sometimes I will do whole wheat pancakes,,,,which have really gotten good since first coming out with them. I use soy "milk" in them. No one can tell either. We have been off moo moo milk for about ten years now. BIG difference in a couple of areas. Skin, sinuses, digestion, and more absorption of calcium is permitted, as there isn't the usual mucus lining in the stomach as well as in the throat.

If I get hungry in the morning I get a Cheerios cereal bar and a V8 at 7-11. I eat the bar first than drink the V8. Summers are pretty hot here so I sometimes drink Gatoraid for breakfast.Ben

OH yes! buckwheat pancakes and also whole grain pancakes! Love those with maple syrup.
Yes, John we've been drinking soymilk for several years too. I do still cook with organic 2 percent though since I have young children. I'm not persuaded vegan is the best for children. But, even with the reduced milk intake neither of mine have had but one ear infection each.

I do still cook with organic 2 percent though since I have young children. Vanessa A good reason TO use soymilk! Better protein, and more useful calcium. The US consumes the most cows milk in the world, yet we have the highest and most sever cases of calcium deficiencies, (in bone diseases), in the world. ???? The reason has been determined that the calcium in cows milk is somewhat blocked off from its own mucus casing linings where absorption is suppose to occur. Cows are really the only little ones born to drink that milk! After breast feeding is done for humans, soy is the next best thing. Many other benefits as well. There's tons of research on this. My daughter did a lot of that before having her first baby, (now 14 months). Some really great formulas out there now, recommended by many Pediatricians. Now,,,if we have kids that look like calves,,,,then by all means,,,Moo milk it is! But think about it. All animals drink their own milk, then it's off to other liquids. What do they know that we don't? The only reason milk has been and still is pushed? Dairy farmers. Soy "baby"! I had to get used to it in my cereals,,,,and now I love cereal more than ever. But it has to be the unsweetened green container in the "Silk Milk" brand. NO vanilla....Plain! Hmmmm! Yeah!!!! Buckwheat pancakes too! This guy who I tuned a piano for and got our band our first gig gave me some of his own blend, from some organic store. WOW! It made for some great breakfasts. Glad you reminded me of that,,,,,,It's time to tune his piano! I'll ask for a big bag of his special blend in lieu of payment! John

Hi John,
That's great that your family has done well with soy! We are also vegetarian though so we have to get some B12 from somewhere. My parents went vegan when I was about four years old. I got very skinny and it worried them. Turns out that my body wasn't able to get all the nutrition I needed from soy/gluten products alone.
I'm still a very enthusiastic supporter of soy products but I understand that not everyone can tolerate them as well as some do. And there are certain ages of children where nutritional deficiencies that go undetected can cause severe problems later in life. Like I said, we only use a little dairy because a little goes a long way. But, I try to avoid the extremes after what happened to me.
But, I do think you have raised excellent points that apply to mature adults. And yes, my children got human milk for at least 9 months to a year. It's the perfect formula for humans---you are right.
Vanessa

John, Spare us the details about cow milk. You can eat a lot of safe foods and die at 95...or eat what you like and die at...95.
Every day the news reports some thing that is bad about food. Several years ago they said that you shouldn't use more salt in a day than you could put on your litle finger.
My father butchered hogs and salted down the meat to cure it. I probably ate enough salt at one time to last me a lifetime. Didn't like it all that much but that was what we had. Funny I have survived all these years.
My father died at...95.

Ray is right ! The gene pool also has a lot to do with the way our bodies react to food. Some folks are blessed some are not. Some folks are also living on garbage food and creating their own health hazards. Common sense seems to be lost on food as well as a lot of other places unfortunately. Food is like anything else. Moderation! Time to go clean my pulpit.

Ray, to ignore the point of possibly feeling better, and possibly being healthier in some regards before dying at 95 could have been saved.
"Survival" is just the heart beating and the brain alive. Living in maybe healthier conditions covers more than just surviving.
But hey,,,,we all do what we do, and from whatever experience we had.
My mom pours salt over all her food like it's snowing! Only recently, (age 88), did her blood pressure rise a bit. Probably from other factors of aging too. So I know about how certain people can do certain things and others might not.
Sorry to hear you dad is gone.....Mine too. 76,,,they said from smoking, and saturated fats through all his life. Heart, and not congenital.
Breakfast not that far off now! 7 and half hours!

I wouldn't disparage anyone who eats tofu, soy milk etc. It makes them feel good. I have never been preached to by a vegan or healthy eater, and if I did I would tell them to shut up. I eat sunflower seeds to keep from smoking. I'm not going to tell other smokers that they should eat sunflower seeds. I like them and they make me feel good. Ben
