If anyone has a TASCAM 238 or 688 for sale, I need one. I had a 688 and did tons of recordings with it. The night we moved into our new house, someone broke into the van and took mine. I don't need it for new recording, but I do need it to play back the many multitrack cassettes I have. Especially the work tapes I made with my late band mate Michael Ian Lerner who passed away after 911 and sadly all our masters were with him and are no lost. I have no copies of anything other than some work demos we did, but that's better than nothing. So I need to track down a working deck to access all that stuff.

I had a 688, but it was stolen in college.
Sorry I can't help you there.
But I do have a Yamaha MTM8 (or 1 or something) that I haven't really found the time to use lately.

I don't need a recorder. I have several. I only need this one to access the unique format 8 track cassette tracks I recorded back in the late 80's and early 90's as work tapes with my bandmate Michael who passed away in 2002 after side effects from 911 in NYC. All our recordings, which he was the keeper of, have disappeared so all that is left are rough demos of the songs we wrote together and they are all on that format. Those machines are relatively old and likely of little use to most, so my hopes are to find a working version so I can access and then transfer those recordings to a different format simply so I have a copy of them. They have no commercial value, but more sentimental value.

Perhaps someone may even have one you could borrow long enough to transfer your songs to a new format. You know there may be a studio somewhere that may have one. I can ask of the studios I am in touch with here.

Thanks Bobbie.. I have tapes buried in boxes that haven't been touched in years, so borrowing one probably isn't a good option. I need one so that whenever I get around to it or find new tapes I have it to use. But thanks for the suggestion.

Until your post, I didn't realize I have the same need. I still have cassette tapes with songs I did in the 80's and 90's and I can't listen or transfere them because of the unique way they used standard cassette tapes. I don't even know the model number but I know it was a 4 track model. I only have a dozen or so songs in that format. It sounds like you may have a lot more.
Looks like we may have to to an ebay search.

I've got a Tascam 414 pretty well new in the box. They are not worth very much...would need to cover shipping and maybe trade for something. Should play your 4 trackers.

Lots of 4 tracks will play other 4 tracks. I am not sure how many other 8 tracks there were for cassettes though. I am only familiar with Tascam's version. I have probably 500 work tapes in that format, again none have commercial value or value of any kind to anyone but me. I doubt I'd even play them for anyone. But I would like to be able to access them. We did a lot of learning back in that time and though I have a few rough mixes from the era, I'd like to see if sometime I could isolate his vocal tracks and redo the music with knowledge 20 years more developed.

About two years ago Steve Dockendorf bought one from somebody through JPF. I believe he's signed up for your Tampa Bay visit in July. Might wanna see if he's still using the thing.
