I was reading an another post here about title and how important they are to the song. And got to thinking. Heres a question for everybody......?
How many Songs past or present can you think of that has a Song Title that has absolutely nothing to do with the Song itself?
I can think of one....
Superstar - The Carpenters

Superstar was written by Leon Russell, listen to the lyrics the song is about a woman longing for her rockstar husband or boyfriend who is on the road, hence "Superstar". I like Rita Coolidge's version the best. One thing that sticks out in my mind is not a song but an entire album. Pink Floyds "Atom Heart Mother". This album has three elements that have nothing to do with one another. The cover which only shows a dairy cow, the album title, and the music which is mostly instrumental.

Punky's Dilemma by Paul Simon.
You've got to know your limitations. I don't know what your limitations are. I found out what mine were when I was twelve. I found out that there weren't too many limitations, if I did it my way. -Johnny Cash It's only music. -niteshift Mike Dunbar Music

Well, I actually have a song that the title is never mentioned in the lyrics. So I assume it happens once in a while.

Hardly popular (although it works for quieting the wee ones), I wrote a lullaby that I named Mason's Song after my grandson even though he isn't mentioned in the song.

The majority of the posts here have listed songs that were written by the artist. They have a totally different set of "rules" than those of a struggling songwriter who is not an artist, pitching to major artists who accept outside material.
No music exec is going to say "no" to an artist's song that breaks traditional songwriting "rules". Their popularity alone will usually sell the song.

I think many of these songs mentioned are ones that may not have the title in the lyrics, but the titles do, in fact, have to do with the songs.

Shayneman hit it right on...Most if not all of these songs are by the artist, not from an outside writer. Those songs are not your competition as a writer.
Im sure there are some songs that donot have the title in the lyric, that have been recorded, that were written by an outside writer, but none come to mind at the moment.
Songs by artists dont have to apply all the rules of songwriting.
Instrumentals can have any title , whose to know?...

Fun thread, guys! Thanks! I have to agree, a lot of these posted do have to do with the song itself, it's just not present in the lyrics. (Except "A Song For You" IS in the hook (if we're thinking the same song--Carpenters, right?)). For example, "Bohemian Rhapsody" is ABOUT a Bohemian, and it's in the FORM of a Rhapsody. So I have to argue with that one. Same holds true for "Punky's Dilemma" as well, if I'm remembering right. I may not be--it's early. But I've already made chocolate-chocolate-chip waffles for breakfast and put dinner in the crockpot. That counts for something, hey right? Linda

Dylan may have done this the most, for a recent writer. "Positively 4th Street" almost requires a conspiracy theorist to find a connection between title and lyrics. Ditto for "Subterranean Homesick Blues" and (my favorite Dylan song) "Love Minus Zero/No Limit." I figure when I become rich and famous, I can do things like that, too. I ain't there yet. I know that Pearl Jam has been mentioned, but "Yellow Ledbetter" was the first song that came to my head when I read this thread. Also, not sure if anyone is famliar with "Santa Monica" by Everclear, but that is one. Stone Temple Pilots has also been mentioned, "Plush" was the song that I was think of. There are many more that have already been said. This is a fun thread. Melissa

All of you folks are right...establish songwriters can break the rules when it comes to writing a song. I once talked with Christopher Cross of "Sailing" once told me that song had nothing to do with sailing he just as well could have called it "Bowling". Really not much to do with this subject...it just popped into my head.
