I've just gotten word that PBS is using an album I produced, "Ever More" by banjo ace Vinnie Farsetta, for the music in a 5-part series on Appalachia to be aired early next year.
Vinnie played every instrument on the album. His banjo was mic'd and recorded by my old partner, the late Rodger Dale "Papa Hawg" Martin. Robert K. Oermann of CMT, the Tennessean, and Music Row magazine called it the best-ever instrumental claw-hammer banjo record.

Congrats!!! It's great to see a good thing happening for ya! Brian, I may be wrong,(and someone please do correct me if I am!!!) but I believe "claw hammer" banjo is 5 string banjo using the fingerpicking method asssociated with Bluegrass... as opposed to the 4 string Tenor banjo which is strummed and associated more with Dixieland Jazz style.

Brian, I'll see if I can get another copy from Vinnie, I only have one now myself LOL.
Davey, clawhammer style is also known as frailing or rapping the banjo. The right hand fingers are bent and the hand moves down toward the skin of the banjo. The nail of the first and/or second finger brushes the string. Usually the hand continues down until the skin is hit percussively. Normally, every other "hit" the right thumb catches the fifth string on the way up. The result is a "bump ta da, bump ta da" rhythm.
This style was associated with Grandpa Jones. I play a little frailing banjo myself and have been a casual listener of the style. Vinnie is the best I've heard.

Wow! I'm totally intrigued! That sounds so complicated . . . I'd love to see it LIVE! Reading your description made me realize what talent it takes to really know how to work an instrument.
Congrats on what sounds like a great collaboration of talented individuals. I look forward to watching the series and hearing more of this style of music.
Once you know when the air dates will be, let me know . . . maybe I could do a special on this genre of music on my show in time to help promote the series AND the music.

I've been to some of those areas, so with those five songs (that I can't wait to hear that banjo), that show will be of great interest to me.
Please let us know as to the times and such when you find out next year.
