Well... My friend Graham did some music to these words just a few weeks ago..wrote kind of a swing melody to them that really surprised me... The be-bopper in me said "wow..that's cool" But my wife said.."yeah..that's nice, but these are words that everybody should hear..I think you'll stand a better chance if you do a more "commercial" version. Well..I tried and just kept coming up empty..I couldn't get Grahams melody out of my head !So I called Chris Dasch and asked if he'd take a look at it... Next thing I know he's written this gorgeous melody and produced this beautiful and elegant track ! I just love what he's done with this (and so does Mary) I hope you all will agree. He even let me get a little artsy fartsy with the ending ! What a guy ! Thanks Chris ! and a thanks as well to Bobbie and Dawg who heard a pre=production of this and gave some good advice ! http://artists2.iuma.com/site-bin/m...ung_-_How_Long_Do_Hearts_Stay_Broken.mp3 (hi-fi dwnload) http://artists2.iuma.com/site-bin/ramgen.ram?aid=61698&sid=261272 (lofi stream) I thought I'd seen it all I was no stranger to the pain I'd played the game and lost a time or two When the fires of love went out (I) gathered all my wits about And readied for the start of something new So, it was no small surprise When the tears that filled my eyes Seemed different from the ones I'd cried before And all the things I used to do To ease the pain and see me thru Well, it seemed they just weren't working anymore... (chorus) And I don't know what's been holding me together I really can't remember Where I was just yesterday And, I wonder if I'll be this way forever How Long Do Hearts Stay Broken Anyway ? If, indeed, Time is a teacher Maybe time can teach me now Or, grant me coin enough to pay the cost For the lesson that I've learned From pages,up till now unturned (Is) that we really don't know love Until it's lost (chorus..outro) [This message has been edited by bob young (edited 09-05-2002).]

Well I got four versions of this looping now and it confirms my suspissions formed when I first read this. It sang itself. When I first sat down at keyboard with tjhsi one, found a beat I fancied, decided it was a minor and went for it, it just went off. Sang it. Listened a few times, tried a few differant beats and flattened then B chord. and sang it again. Liked that better so transposed to a key that suited me better and did it again. Listening to Chris' nice one. I still hear the influence of my melody there, so as I said this sang itself and I would be surprised if any composer, in any genre would have come up with a melody much differant that this nice one. Least I had a go. And got the melody close to how it finished up. Just having a go at a Bob Young thing was inspiratioj enough for me. Sob. Do have to admit, I would listen to the swing version more myself but that is just my personal likes in mysic. Toward Production, which I only mention in a demo listen because Chris is public performance standard. Chris. Remember way back, I mentioned your H sounds being wanting. It comes up in here in one of your hows. I would be thinking "Breathe from the gut on the H sounds" a little more to get rid of that trendance. Good job Guys. Sob. Now i got another empty tune to find words for. There is always a bright side. Thanks for the chance to have a go Bob. Hi Bob
I agree with Jeannette it's a beautiful lyric, a few more solid works like this and you won't be at the 1st or 5th stage in this business for long. If I have any nits it is I'm not sure if we learn anything from pages yet unturned, perhaps you should turn those pages. I'll head over to the audio dept. to listen now. Jan

oh... my... god... I can't stop the tears, Bob, Chris. This is really phenomenal, really really phenomenal. I don't think I've ever used that adjective to describe a song before, you two. Man, Chris... You are a beautiful man and BOB, for those sweet, sad and wonderful words to come out of a REAL man... well, tell Mary to give you a kiss for me, will ya? Come wipe my tears, will ya? ![[Linked Image]](http://www.justplainfolks.org/ubb/wink.gif) Tinkinawe

Hi and thanks..
Actually that pages thing is covered ( I thought) by the words "up till now unturned"..What the guy is saying is that he'd thought he'd read every page in the book of life, and is realizing now that he hasn't learned everything quite yet !
Thanks for checking us out !

Tinkala..
I promise that whenever I write something as unabashedly romantic as this, I always think of you.. I've come to know that your'e as big a romantic woozie as I am ! I know how much you love Chris' singing too so when he sent me this I knew you'd love it ! I'm real fussy about my own music, and it was strange to just turn these words over to somebody... I'm not ashamed to say that I choked up when I heard what Chris had done with these words...Mary did too. If nobody in the world hears this it will still be a great gift to me from Chris..and you know what...That's enough for me !
Thanks Blondie !

Not Too Shabby Guys, (glossary = high praise) comes a lot closer to what I would have done. As Graham says, it all comes down preference. A few things I would have done diferently, but wouldn't say better or worse. All in all a really beautiful song uhoh, swoon alert!! ![[Linked Image]](http://www.justplainfolks.org/ubb/smile.gif) ------------------ Harriet

Ya' know Cobber..I been playing your "swingtime" version in my car since I got it from you..that's why when I tried to write another melody I was stuck on yours and couldn't hear anything else. Chris had never heard yours..
Amazing..........
Glad you like this one my friend !

Very, very nice! Kudos to all involved. Chris, your performance is extremely good, with your voice giving the song a country flavor. No slight on you (and it's probably just my non-country taste), but in my mind, I hear a VERY powerful female (non-country) voice singing this one (ala the American Idol -- Kelly ??). Also, I'd repeat the chorus again at the end in a mod-up.
JMO. Real nice work.

Was just talking to Chris and he told me about the song...really liked it; seems commercial enough it could be a rock power ballad, pop, or country song. Can tell Chris got some new piano samples! Sounds great!

Hello Bob and Chris, You have done a really nice job with this lovely lyric that I wish I had written myself, Chris. I always enjoy hearing you sing. You put a lot of feeling into your delivery and that is what sells a song IMHO. Good luck with it, guys. Idamarie

Whew....now that I have somewhat recovered, I can type this. Even though I had a sneak preview on this one..when I listened just now, it honestly choked me up so much I literally swallowed wrong and lost my breath...so I can say this almost killed me. It is simply a stunning lyric with stunning music that gives the lyric the haunting beauty it deserves. A match made in...well on JPF at least. Love it guys!

Tom..
Chris and I kept this demo simple because we saw the crossover potential right away..
It would have been easy to beef up the chorus and your idea about the whole tone modulation at the end would be good if we were doing a record instead of a demo.
It's been my experience that the more production oriented a demo is the more you give folks NOT to like.
Chris is gonna pitch this and I guess if some cookie cutter "American Idol" type gets a hold of it...well...a buck is a buck.... I'd much rather see a tasteful singer like Bonnie Raitt or Steve Wariner or somebody like that get their ears on it. When I was writing this lyric I had decided that I was going to keep it non-gender-specific...I'm happy that you and several others see potential in different markets..
We'll see...
Thanks again Tom

Graham...Sorry there cobber, didn't mean to steal your thunder, but I'm glad you approve of this version. Thanks for the kudos!
Tink thinks I'm beautiful and Bob's real, Dano thinks we're young and dasching. God, it couldn't get much better than that:-) Thanks for commenting guys.
Ida, always appreciate a nod from an accomplished musician like you. Thank you for the nice compliment!
I already knew Bobbie liked this one cause I talked with her about it last week. Sorry the final version damn near killed ya hon!
Ria, Harriet, Tom and Blake, thank you all for listening and commenting. These last two songs I've written with Bob have been a lot of fun. He is hinting there may be more in the offing.

No sweat Chris. I got thunder to spare. That is what this game is about in my book. Try a song in as many combinations at it takes to ring ya bell then go for it. Isn't the first time I didn't cut the mustard and won't be the last. I have almost got one done to my take anyway so I am still in front I figure. If we al took the first collab we got offered ther sure would be some pretty orinary songs out there. Hang on. There is some pretty ordinary songs out there. Regards. Very nice fellas. Great hook and lead into it - nice melody - every darn little thing's been taken care of.
Kinda reminded me of a male "Diane Warren" sort of thing and certainly holds up to anything she's written and probably better than a lot of stuff she's written.
Liked it so much I'm gonna listen again - the hook is still with me long minutes after it finished. oh yeah....

Ya know..I'm notused to being a lyricist waiting around for a melody..usually I'm writing them as I'm doing words... When Chris e mailed the first version of this over to me it was almost like having a new baby delivered...very exciting !
Thanks Blakeh !

Ron, Calvin, John & KL...Thank you guys for stopping in to listen (or try) and commenting as well. Means a lot to Bob and I.
Hobes...thanks for the very nice compliment. I'm sure I've never been compared to Diane Warren before. Funny thing though, and my wife's been telling me this for a long time; I write my best stuff when I'm not trying to write for the commercial market. The heart works best every time!

Bob and Chris: Before I get started, I want to point out that I have just this night been told that my critiques are brutally honest. I wanted to make sure you knew that so when I tell you guys that I absolutely love this you'll know I'm not just being nice. This is just beautiful. I actually cried. Just beautiful.

Late to the party, as usual.
Chris, this has got to be one of the prettiest melodies I've heard from you, and that ain't easy to say. Simple plus restrained equals VERY NICE!
Bob, you've always turned a clever phrase and this lyric is no exception. Beautifully heartwarming.
Now, if you'll excuse me, I'ma gonna go listen again.

Hi you two - another fine collab, congratulations. I'll be listening again after I post this comment because I want to take particular note of the chorus. I thought the words "together" and "forever" might sound better with the last syllable drawn out rather than the middle syllable. My opinion will probably change after I hear it agin. Bob. glad you got the package and thanks for letting me know. Cheers to you both. Judy

Hi Judy..
Been missing you !
You know..when Chris first sent me the music on this..I was thinking about a few things I'd do different if I were singing it... Quickly tho, I came to the opinion that any change I made wopuld not make it better..only different.
This melody of Chris' has come to feel as natural to me as if I'd written it myself.
Glad you like this one young lady..

Wow, this thing just keeps on growing. Erica, thanks for being so BRUTAL! ![[Linked Image]](http://www.justplainfolks.org/ubb/smile.gif) Appreciate the listen and comment. Gregory, I knew you'd like this one, you old softie. Thanks for taking a listen (twice?). Judy, Judy...Phasing is something I ALWAYS pay strict attention to while composing. I try many combinations for all the songs I write. Everyone has their own personal preferences I suppose. I just try to make it as pleasing to as many folks as possible and still keep it comfortable for me to sing. If someone else were to cover this song, they'd probably change the phrasing here and there to suit their own style. And that's fine by me. We really appreciate you listening and commenting Judy. Take care. Corey, nice of you to stop by and listen. Thanks for the kudos my friend. OK Bob, back to you partner! Chris

Bob and Chris, Wow. This goes beyond craft to art. I never hear the songwriter in it, just the experience. It has that timeless thing to it that could get it cut by a lot of different artists. This will open doors. Mike ------------------ Mike Dunbar Music
You've got to know your limitations. I don't know what your limitations are. I found out what mine were when I was twelve. I found out that there weren't too many limitations, if I did it my way. -Johnny Cash It's only music. -niteshift Mike Dunbar Music
