I am new to JPF, and I have posted a couple of lyrics on the feedback forum, I guess it just takes a little time to be noticed around here?

A crit would really help me to learn how you guys see and respond to my work, and also help me to write more effectively.....

Thanks for your time.....

Have you critiqued others?

If you start doing that than I guarantee that people will start critiquing back.

How many critiques have you given?
It's back scratching thing.

Find the people who give good critiques and critique their latest

Find the people who get a lot of critiques and critique their songs so you'll be visible.

Give honest helpful suggestions

Be friendly and cheerful

Become a jpf community member

Post one of your lyrics a week

Thank people for their comments

I don't class it as a backscratch.
I class it as an "Oh Oh, Another user. Pass." Thing.
Be seen to be doing what ypu want of others, and some of them will respond.
They are the ones who keep forums alive.

I am new(Well I posted here a couple years ago--computer died) and can echo Andes' comments---You don't have to be an expert, if we all were, we'd be too busy cutting songs & depositing royalty checks to be posting here(Though some very successful writer's DO graciously take the time here) It's the idea of another pair of eyes; sometimes especially w/ lyrics, somebody can be forcing a song into a country mode, & somebody might see a rock song in it, and that might make a heck of a difference for the writer...Anyway posted on board one- Feel free to comment on some of mine on "Lyric board 3"--I think I have one on board one,but I put the Ree-write on three after seeing a couple of names I recognized--Good Luck!!!Al in Florida

Hi Snake,

Critique first, post later! That way you are guaranteed to get the attention of at least some people when you post. The general spoken rule I think is 5 or 6 critiques per post and as Ande said, once a week is good.

Best,
Rachel

FYI: There is no rule that you can only post 1 lyric a week. However, peer pressure suggests some prefer that. Just remember if you post a ton of lyrics, you'll not likely get a lot of feedback and if you aren't offering any in return, you won't likely get much either. Hasn't stopped some people though.

So post whatever you like, but if you want to get response, you should be critiquing more than you are receiving. We average 10 responses to each post on the lyric boards combined so if you want the best odds of getting feedback, go out and critique 10 other lyrics for each one you post and I assure you that you'll get feedback on your own. And you'll likely learn just as much through your own critiques of others work as receiving them from others. Every writer makes the same mistakes over the course of time. Look at it as another learning opportunity for your own work.

Brian couldn't be more right about inspiration being derived in both the writing & reading of critiques--I was responding to a critique the other day which started a chain of events that became a new "baby" in less than 12 hrs...Al in Florida

I agree with Brian in most things in this post.
I further think the suggestion to only post one lyric a week is counterproductive to both the writer, and the forum.
Right now, the question "Where has everybody gone?" is on the front page of Lyris 2, from memory.
Hell.
Do that and you will have a page full of Couchgrouch and other less than contributory posters works up there, and it will be about as inspiring as watching paint dry.
Look back at the days we had this forum buzzing, and ask yourself what went wrong.
And do something about it.
Graham

I agree with Graham. One post a week for a rule makes the board too slow. I used to be on the board a lot , but anymore when I drop back by, I don't really see that much to critique . A whole lot of people posting lyrics that have already been demod and in some cases recorded. Well, I don't see that much need in critiquing them cause they're probably not going to change them anyway and I don't really think they're looking for critiques. A lot of posting stuff they already think or know is pretty good In other words songs they consider "finished".
10 critiques for a post is probably a pretty good idea. I ordinarily did a whole lot more than that whaen I was on the board, but that's just me. Boards in general, tend to turn into kind of a mutual admiration society, like "ain't we good"
Nickles worth. Maybe stepped on a few toes, but I ain't in no popularity contest <G>

I've only been a member for a month or two, and I get so many laughs off this board! And I mean that in a good way.
I'm a pretty good songwriter, and I have great taste in songwriters: Prine, Waits, Newman, Mitchell et al. Yet I continually get my socks knocked off reading and being moved by lyrics on this board: and isn't that the point? To find people making art because you love people who do that, and the art itself?
"Come writers and critics, throughout the land / And don't criticize what you don't understand..." (Bob Dylan)

Come on back to the playground boys: I've watched mediocre lyrics turn into winners via the process of posting, getting suggestions, and then rewriting. If you want examples just say so, but they are on the lyric forums for all with good taste to discover.

The great thing about critics is that they are usually critical thinkers also: so I hope you'll reconsider and contribute your talents as well as your complaints.
