THEY GOOFED AGAIN
[Verse 1] They came in with a smoking gun They said, “This time we’ve got the one!” They waved the papers, made a scene Then somehow broke the whole machine
They called the lawyers, called the press They promised everyone success But somewhere between “We’ve got him!” And “Wait a minute…” — the case is rotten
[Pre-Chorus] They had a plan They had a case They had that confident look on their face Then somebody pulled the wrong string And suddenly it’s a different thing
[Chorus] They goofed again, they goofed again Here we go around the bend Big bad words and a big bad show Then — oops! — where did the evidence go?
They goofed again, they goofed again Somebody tell them how this ends They swing for the fences, then strike out again They goofed again — they goofed again!
[Verse 2] They called somebody a dirtbag loud They looked so tough in front of the crowd But when the facts came marching in That little victory turned into a spin
They said, “We’ll make that prosecutor pay!” Then watched the whole thing slip away A master plan, a brilliant scheme That crumbled right into a meme
[Bridge] Oopsie, daisy, what went wrong? They've been pounding that drum too long One more hearing, one more try One more headline, one more “Why?”
[Final Chorus] They goofed again, they goofed again Here we go around the bend Big bad words and a big bad show Then — oops! — where did the evidence go?
They goofed again, they goofed again Somebody tell them how this ends They swing for the fences, then strike out again They goofed again — they goofed again!
[Outro] They goofed again! Yeah, they goofed again! Raise the curtain, cue the band — They goofed it across the land!

For those of you who don't know what this song is about, it's about US politics. This one was inspired by Republican Senator Eric Schmitt’s recent attempt to trip up former Trump prosecutor Jack Smith during a Senate hearing. Trump wants Smith prosecuted, but so far, efforts to find something that sticks against him haven't gone very far.
Schmitt was trying to suggest that Smith had secretly been in Atlanta on February 3, 2024 — apparently to imply a connection with Fulton County DA Fani Willis. His supposed evidence centered around an Atlanta Hawks game against the Golden State Warriors. There was just one problem. Smith said he hadn’t been at that game. He had been at a University of Iowa women’s basketball game in Maryland, watching Caitlin Clark.
Atlanta Hawks. Iowa Hawkeyes.
Two different teams. Two different cities. About 650 miles apart.
Schmitt had accused Smith of perjury and even called him a “total dirtbag.” Then Senator Amy Klobuchar pointed out the rather important detail: maybe you should get your facts straight before calling someone a dirtbag. And just like that, the big “gotcha” moment went poof. It was pretty embarrassing for Schmitt.
That little episode inspired this tongue-in-cheek song about big accusations, big confidence, and spectacularly small details.
They goofed again!

Sounds like a IQ test on how long it takes school buses to get to get to Maryland to Atlanta . Who knows . You ruin your day at 7am watching that bullshit. Yup you love politics .

I actually hate politics but when you start paying 11$ for a gallon of gas you just can't ignore politics anymore. Rob, Keep it somewhat real. You have been consumed by Trump for years as gas went up and down, and you have brought it here again and again. A more logical assumption is that you are a highly agitated little man who's emotions engulf him. I suspect this was another baited trap. See what you can get Brian to do. Good luck with it.

Hey Sunset, I'd like to remind you that this song has nothing to do with Trump. They goofed. I'm sure you agree they did. Or are you accusing me of spreading some kind of fake news? As for gas prices... they've never reached 11$ here. We all know who is responsible. Come on Sunset, don't say it's Biden's fault. And one more thing, Sunset: you say I’m “consumed by Trump,” yet my song is about Schmitt confusing the Atlanta Hawks with the Iowa Hawkeyes — and somehow you managed to bring Trump, gas prices, and my emotional state into the comments. I think you may have just demonstrated my point for me. 😂

Yeah yeah yeah Rob.
Your post is about Trump and gas prices. i.e. his decisions and their consequences. Give up the your girlish attempts at head fakes. They are too obvious to obscure.
The paradox is that I agree...somewhat. Trump has the country mired in another expensive war in the middle east. He gambled and , to date, is losing the bet.
Be that as it may, Im not going to start dumping political angst on a songwriting site...because I am not an ate up little twat.
Of course, im not suggesting that anyone else is.

Yes yes john, this war and it's effect on gasoline prices and the inflation that was going to be there anyway because the economy has been mismanaged for so many years is causing Trump and in turn the Republican party to take a hit. The only thing left to wonder is how big a hit.
The drug cartels, criminals walking the streets, incarcerated criminals who want lesser sentences, people who want someone to pay for an operation that will disguise their gender, drag queens who want to perform bad routines in front of children are all very hopeful...as are you.
Good luck to you-all. AOC and Bernie may be running OUR house and senate soon.

Marty you have become paranoid. Did you actually read the lyric? Are you not familiar with the facts?
You see things ...all those you mentioned and more fed by whatever drives you ...wherever you look.
The american people will vote and decide and hopefully elections are not interfered with
Here Elon urged Alberta, Quebec and Saskatchewan to separate as a PQ seperatist minority was just elected while in Alberta a seperatist group including a fringe that has reportedly promised To essentially hand over strategic assets to the US for its support
Saskatchewan had an immediate no and iur federal government has yet to respond
In the meantime Canada was pointedly told to stay out of your upcoming elections.
I expect some canadian tesla owners will once again ditch their cars and others will not buy
Im waiting for our Gripen and SAAB announcement as the US once again comes after our aviation industry
Different worries different perpectives

No John,
Im not paranoid. Nor am I interested in overreaching and ongoing back and forth here.
If Trump and the Repubs take a major hit...then they do and history moves on. I have my priority issues...which may take hit too.
A word of warning... You Canadians have had a nice situation for a long time. Your liberal thinking is causing you to erode and collapse what you have.
Be careful what you wish for.
Signing off here.

All I can say Marty is that i am happy not to be you.
I fully believe inside every human is a vibrant life living its genetic expression of physical mental and emotional characteristics...borne with a birthright inherited from parents...added to the sum of who they are and inspire to become brought to the day to day incoming experience and presence of their time. I fully wish that for you to be positive for yourself
We are both smart rational people who have interacted well in the past.
It is in our experience that we differ and in the futures we face. Your future to you seems under threat as evidenced by your posts
Your past rabid support of everything trump has gone south and there is no real choice amongst stinking fish
Bernie and AOC coming...
Yup...i am happy not to be you

First off, I'd like to reiterate that this song is not about Trump. I've already explained what inspired it.
But I find this statement from Sunset highly amusing: “The inflation that was going to be there anyway because the economy has been mismanaged for so many years…” Let's look at the timeline. Trump was president for almost 6 of the past 10 years. So if we're talking about years of economic mismanagement, it seems reasonable to examine his administration's record, rather than automatically blaming the previous administration.
Yet somehow, Sunset's argument manages to acknowledge that Trump is taking a political hit while shifting the blame for the underlying economic problems elsewhere. That sounds awfully familiar. Blame the previous administration, take credit for the good, and dodge responsibility for the bad.
Wake up, America.
Sunset also wrote: “AOC and Bernie may be running OUR House and Senate soon.” Well, maybe then Congress will start doing its job again.
During Trump's second term, we've seen a strong concentration of decision-making power in the White House, including major decisions about the war with Iran. Congress has constitutional powers of its own, including the power to declare war and control federal spending. Yet when the president takes major military action, Congress often struggles to exercise meaningful control.
So perhaps having a different majority in Congress wouldn't be such a bad thing. Maybe Congress would start acting as an independent branch of government again, rather than letting the White House dominate the agenda. And if AOC and Bernie help make that happen, why should that be something to fear?
Just a thought.

What do you preach? Is your brain pathologically miswired or are you just simply lying? Give up the Little Miss Goody Two Shoes farce and own what you are. Your TDS is destructive to a song site.

Yeah, that's what I asked Ben. Ben told me to practice what I preach. What do I preach? Sunset, You asked what I preach, so let me clarify. I write songs. Sometimes they're funny, sometimes they're serious, and sometimes current events inspire them. “They Goofed Again” was inspired by a specific incident involving Eric Schmitt and Jack Smith. I've explained that more than once. “Wake up America” was my closing remark in a political discussion. You're entitled to disagree with it. I didn't start the discussion. But what exactly does that have to do with my brain being “pathologically miswired” or me supposedly lying? If you disagree with my views, address the arguments. Personal insults don't make your argument any stronger. Rob

Do you really think that you are smarter than everybody else, and this watery crap that you pass off for debate is going to persuade anyone of anything?
WAKE UP AMERICA... is an imperative.
And you are a German citizen, who claims GER as his home on his SC page, belying his primary allegiances and who also commands us Americans...to WAKE UP.
That's preachy. beyond preachy.
You need to WAKE UP and take ownership of your actions...if it is in you.

Why you don't practice what you preach . Ben, I'm genuinely curious. What exactly am I supposed to practice? I'm posting songs, collaborating with other songwriters, expressing my opinions, and discussing music. I'm not calling anyone names or throwing F-bombs at people. So what, specifically am I doing that contradicts what I "preach"? If someone doesn't like what I write about, they're under no obligation to listen to my songs or comment on them. Disagreeing is fine, but personal insults are unnecessary.

Sunset, the part of your response I find most absurd is the suggestion that being a German citizen who calls Germany home somehow disqualifies me from telling Americans to wake up. I've lived in both countries for decades, and I have every right to express my views about either one. My nationalities and where I call home have nothing to do with whether my arguments are valid. Disagree with what I say if you like, but questioning my allegiance because I'm German is a pretty weak argument.

Absurd? This started with you coming up with some low intelligence line of crap about how you're not being preachy.
...when you are "telling Americans to wake up."
That is absurd on its face. That is why I'm wondering if you lack the mental capacity to connect those dots, or if you're just lying.
This is a free speech songwriting website. Germans, ukrainians, Iranians, Palestinians, Israelis are all free to tell America to wake up and come fight their Wars or whatever else.
But Americans are also free to tell you Germans to piss off.
Back to the point. Ben was right about the preaching. Unless someone is a completely oblivious fool, that point is an inarguable and undeniable.
Ben would like you to spare us all your Twinkie rantings about American politics on this songwriting website. So would I

Sunset, if the owner of this website asked me to stop posting songs with political content, I would. But you're not the owner, so I won't stop posting them.
I'm ending this endless discussion now because it has absolutely nothing to do with the lyrics I posted here.
But one more thing interests me. Sunset, one historical point: after 9/11, it was the United States that sought allied support for its campaign in Afghanistan, and Germany contributed troops. In 2026, Trump sought European support for the war against Iran, while Germany declined to join the war militarily. So I'm curious: what German war are you referring to when you suggest that Germans tell America to come fight their wars?

The answer to your question is Ukraine. The primary reason was to stop the Russians. You spouted all that crap about how the United States has a moral obligation to go stop the Russians and fund NATO. You are non-stop lecturing us on what the Europeans thought of Donald Trump and whatever else we were doing.
You know that I don't like your political posts. Clearly, neither does Ben. They are divisive and I think you're pathetically selfish for insisting on putting them up on a songwriting website. But you can do it.
The flip side of that coin is that I can shine a light on their inconsistencies.
Rob, I don't know if you lack intellectual honesty or if your brain just isn't capable of connecting all the dots. But when Ben called you out for not practicing what you preach, and you responded with the question as to what was preachy, it made a case that you lack intellectual honesty and or lack the intellectual ability to be able to see the glaring inconsistencies in what you are putting up.. on a site missioned for songwriting

The answer to your question is Ukraine. Sunset, Ukraine was invaded by Russia. That's not Germany's war. Your original statement suggested that Germany asks America to fight its wars. Can you give me one example of Germany asking the United States to fight a war on Germany's behalf? After WW2, Germany has fought alongside the United States, when the US sought allied support. That's quite different from Germany asking America to fight its wars.

You have a comprehension and memory problem Rob.
You, Rachel Maddow et al blamed the Ruskys for Hillary's defeat. It became an inflamed and even pathological obsession. (TDS) For 3 years we had to hear you and Rachel Maddows declare that undisclosed sources were going to prove that Trump was a Russian asset, and take him down. At the end of 3 years, an addled old man went before Congress to reveal that he had damning evidence....
of nothing.
Later Putin invaded Ukraine. And then you started beating your little Roosky drum all over again, about how the US had a moral obligation to put Putin down by any means necessary.
You also ranted that the US had no right to question how NATO was funded, supplied, manned. That we should accept the status quo and do "what was right."
And then the PREACHING, about how all of you high minded Europeans viewed Trump for demanding that you all pay in more into NATO .
So even though you Germans did not declare war, you declared that my country and its resources had a moral obligation to be in the war and drive the Roosky's out.
What?
Yes you did Rob. Over and over. Be intellectually honest for once.
If you recall, I told you to get a gun, fly in, volunteer and fight the Rooskys yourself...more than once.

This started off with Ben telling you to practice what you preach and lose the politics.
Now it is starting to go round and round and back on itself, rabbit holing over here and over there.
As is typical.
Come back with some distortion. I will wait and day or two or a few to clarify the facts for you, in order to short circuit the convolutions.

But let's not forget how it started: Ben told me to practice what I preach, and I simply asked him what he meant. I'm still waiting for Ben to answer that question. You chose to answer on his behalf, and the discussion went from there. I'll leave it at that.

You chose to answer on his behalf, and the discussion went from there. I'll leave it at that. I can clear that up for you. It has two parts. In another one of your nauseating threads you wrote: (paraphrased) Alas, Woe be unto me. Where did the music go? I miss the music and the love so dearly. If only, everyone, could be so virtuous as I. And then Ben said,(paraphrased) WTF? You're putting up all this divisive political crap. You are the disease for what pains you, not the cure. "Practice what you preach." At that, you asked Ben an open ended question inquiring about what you had ever put up that was "preachy." I answered with some blaring examples. Simple as that. Guten Morgen

Sunset, you're making this into something much bigger than it ever was.
“Where Did the Music Go?” was inspired by two actual comments. Ben wrote, “Ok, let's go on this dead site.” John Lawrence Schick then responded that if the site died, it could come back to life.
Those two comments inspired me to write a song about the state of the songwriting community and whether it could be revived. That's it. Nothing more, nothing less.
You call it preaching. That's your interpretation, not my intention. People were talking about a dying songwriting forum and whether it could come back to life. I wrote a song about that.
Apparently, writing a song about a conversation on a songwriting forum has become a much bigger issue than the conversation itself.

Sunset, you're making this into something much bigger than it ever was. I, along with now Ben, are calling this out because it is not some incidental snapshot but one more nauseating moment in an unending years long string of your nauseating and divisive political rants. Which are now, exclusive to you and your Canadian pal, John. Though, even John, has expressed a realization for how distracting and divisive this crap is. At this time, these political treatises and Lamentations that you put up one after the other are pretty much coming from one self-absorbed German citizen, who thinks that he and Rachel Maddow are so righteous that the rest of us should align our thinking with the two of yours.

Sunset, you're not really discussing my songs. You never did. You're using this thread to make a much broader accusation about my posting history, my political views (as you interpret them), and my character. And you keep repeating the same accusations. You seem frustrated with politics. Ben is frustrated with what AI is doing to the music industry, and I get frustrated when I fill up my car with gas. That's life. We all have things that frustrate us. But none of that changes what inspired me to write the song you mentioned: two members talking about the future of this songwriting site. Nothing more, nothing less. Just by the way, Sunset... I'm an American citizen, just like you. So there's really no need to keep bringing my German background into your arguments. It doesn't strengthen your point, and frankly, it doesn't reflect well on you.

Marty, you are a pot calling the kettle black. For years you slugged it out here with us. Now that you don't want to anymore, well no one can in your books
WRT political posts in lyric, song and discussion
We live in "interesting times", impacted by US decision making, that has affected almost everyone around the world and inside the USA
If Rob (or I) write about it in lyric, song or discussion, you call it divisive and deride the poster...but pointedly ignore the message which has merit.
This post does IMO. Perhaps not in your opinion...and that is OK. But you did make this into something it is not.
This one was very clear. The Senate committee's attempt to entrap Jack Smith was an embarrasment...for the committee and Senator Kennedy and his research staff. Full stop.
It is you who made it about Trump because it is "his" administration. I do not believe this was his fault or that he had anything directly to do with this gaffe.
If writing ever becomes work I think I'm going to have to stop

WRT political posts in lyric, song and discussion Your divisive political rants have been going on for years. I have objected to them and responded to them, Yes, I personally, would like to see them gone. Clearly, Ben would too. At the present time, there has been a change... A severe agent of dysfunction and divisiveness is gone. You may have noticed that Dom has stayed mostly out of this post and he posts songs and items of music related content. Even you apologized to Whitney for your part in the discord here. Most importantly, There are some new names posting thoughtful songs. None of them, that I have seen are ranting about their politics and shoving it in other people's faces. What can be concluded to STILL REMAIN that is distracting and dysfunctional to a Songwriting site?... Rob and his Trump obsession, along with the occasional reinforcement of his Canadian cohort. You all like to comment on whatever you choose. I like to illuminate you and your comments.

Let me offer this up as a solution.
Simply do not comment on Rob's "political posts" ...they will fall down the stack if no one engages.
As it is, you have assumed some kind of posting police\judge\jury role here that has you herding cats.

John,
Seems sensible, but a bit unfair.
If Rob has the prerogative to make his eurocentric rants, it's only fair that I retain my prerogative to illuminate them.
I think at this point, in this discussion, that I've made my points and am ready to...give this a rest.
Subject to...whether or not Rob puts up something that doesn't truly connect the dots.

You may declare some of your threads non-political, but they aren't. I don't introduce politics into non-political threads. I wait for them to happen. If they do, I comment. If they don't, I don't.

Both of you have faults that are hard of hearing. Both of you are right AND wrong
You both have vibrantly alive creative minds but bring entirely different backgrounds that brought truths and moralities you both cling to when facts and circumstances are seen through different lenses.
I am exactly the same as the both of you...with lots of hard of hearing faults I am sure
Rob posts overt and sly political songs and that causes you Marty to see Trump attacked even if others are the focus of his attention. You have staunchly defended Trump for the better part of a decade in our political back and forth while both Rob and I saw his flaws and their effects and called out some of the things you clung to hard Here, for Rob to say it is not about Trump is factually true but can be seen as inferentially false and dishonest for him to say in your Marty POV
I agree you can do so by inference. But then your own history of posting and opinion is brought to your "I am the arbiter here of what can be posted" as you bring an acusatory and deriding tone that causes Rob to defend his position.
Inference is a strong "sense" in vibrantly alive logical reasoning that forms conclusions ....and here neither of you can help but butt heads.
You will never agree while you are both right and wrong.....simply due to your differing experiences...and while both of you have faults
If writing ever becomes work I think I'm going to have to stop

Both of you have faults that are hard of hearing. Both of you are right AND wrong Well, There you have it. That's that. I was so confused about all that, but this infallible declaration of JohnV in the year 2026 lays it out as if an edict from beyond, in stone. Notwithstanding, I plan to continue being me. Have a good day John. And try not to think about Trump. That's what I strive to do. Trump world is too raucous, bumpy and unsettling for me...so I try to leave him out of my life from one moment to the next. Contrary to what you believe, I do not like everything that he says and does. Never have. Having said that, if he runs a third time, I will vote for him...because the dim alternatives are societal psychosis. Paxton is wretched, but I am going to vote for him because Talarico is destructive insanity packaged up to sound and look like Opie of Mayberry. Yet, much preferable to Crockett. (not Davy) Then again, I may just end up watching Trump's 2028 coronation on TV. Like Napoleon, I suspect that he will place the crown on his own head rather than have a pope or someone else do it. Adios from a border state.

Sunset, "Do More Of What Makes You Happy", that's the title of one of my recent non-political songs that I posted here. And, I'll do more of what makes me happy. And more power to you Rob. I'm all for it. Except in those cases where selfish people live in tight apartment complexes and blare their music until late at night upsetting the quiet enjoyment of other people... but, it makes them happy. And then there are cases where dysfunctional personalities with underlying neuroticisms join FB pages about cats, sewing, line dancing, whatever else, and then relentlessly impose their agitated spiritual and political beliefs on the persons there, whether they like it or not... but, it presumably makes them happy to do so. Ps...I saw your song, but do not remember commenting on it. I looked at the lyrics and it struck me as thinly postured and "saccharin-ish." I preferred not to leave that as a comment.

Good of you to deride my post and introduce politics into your response Marty.
Really solidifies the ground you stand on.
