A ton of stories could be written around this title and I've never decided which way to go with it.

We never know what love is, til we know what it's NOT.

Pretty important lesson......................... now just have to figure out a way to tell it.

If you knew
That it all would all end
Would you go back
And do it all over again

I can't sleep....

[Verse]
I thought love was fireworks in the dark
A rush of words, a reckless start
I thought it lived in perfect days
No cracks, no scars, no debts to pay

[Verse]
I chased the feeling, not the truth
Held onto ghosts of wasted youth
I called it love, but deep inside
Something always felt denied

[Pre-chorus]
I walked through fire, I crossed the cold
To find the warmth I couldn’t hold

[Chorus]
We never know what love is
Until we know what it’s not
It’s not the quiet nights feeling alone
Or the tears that time forgot
It’s learning how to stay and breathe
When leaving feels like the safer thought
We never know what love is
Until we know what it’s not

sometimes love comes all disguised
as burning words in reckless fires
stoked by smoldering men
by one too many men

some pretend to be so wise
by saying words that buy them time
disingenuously men
they could never be a ten

We never know what love is, til we know what it's NOT.
We learn to be discrete and find a better class of dog
A man who will be loyal, no matter what the cost
We never know what love is, til we know what it's NOT.

We never know what love is, til we know what it's NOT

First showed up on time with flowers
go out on the town and dance for hours
then a quiet bar
where we talked for more

Firewood burns till it burns down low
how do you make them embers glow
when the fire is done
is it time to run

Can we know about love if we don't know what it's not
Have we been here before is there more to it than we thought
I been trying hard but I keep on coming short
Can we know about love if we don't know what it's not

John............... I guess I'm thinking more of describing what happens in horrible relationships (not just romantic, but parents and kids).... cus if you're raised to think something is normal.. and then they say I Love you.. then that's what you think love is.

Then you get older and find someone who truly loves you, respects you and cares, THAT'S how you know what love is, because you certainly know what it's not.

Hell is for Children....Pat Benatar

They cry in the dark, so you can't see their tears
They hide in the light, so you can't see their fears
Forgive and forget, all the while
Love and pain become one and the same
In the eyes of a wounded child

Because Hell, Hell is for children
And you know that their little lives can become such a mess
Hell, hell is for children
And you shouldn't have to pay for your love
With your bones and your flesh

It's all so confusing, this brutal abusing
They blacken your eyes, and then apologize
Be daddy's good girl, and don't tell mommy a thing
Be a good little boy, and you'll get a new toy
Tell grandma you fell off the swing

Because Hell, Hell is for children
And you know that their little lives can become such a mess
Hell, hell is for children
And you shouldn't have to pay for your love
With your bones and your flesh
No, Hell is for children

Hell, Hell is for Hell
Hell is for Hell, Hell is for children

Hell, Hell is for Hell
Hell is for Hell, Hell is for children

Hell, Hell is for Hell
Hell is for Hell, Hell is for children

Hell is for children
Hell is for children

Pat's husband would be playing guitar, and she would be there doing other things.
Lines of Lyric would come to her and they'd write together.

Pat Benatar co-wrote "Hell is for Children" with her husband and guitarist Neil Giraldo and bassist Roger Capps, inspired by articles she read about child abuse, turning a shocking top

Philosophical Songs don't seem to work for me. I want a Singer-Character, a Love-Interest Character, maybe a Conflict-Character, a Story.
The Singer-Character can be telling me the story, or just having conversation with the other Characters and I'm eves-dropping.
A philosophical treatment doesn't enable 'furniture' because there aren't people, nouns and pronouns, actors, to do the action of the verbs. People to sit on the furniture.
I don't think I'd look for a way to lead up to those exact words.
Instead, I'd find a way to tell a Story that implies the concept.
Make it conversational, people, Characters in a Play, a Three-Minute Movie.
Maybe write the Story, prose, and see if a Song comes from it.

I couldn’t resist exploring this idea. It started with a philosophical statement and turned into a song. It’s more reflective than story-driven, which felt right - and philosophical songs aren’t new territory for me. Last year I wrote a few songs inspired by Einstein quotes. This one grows on you as is progresses.

What Love Is
https://soundclick.com/song/15171980

[Instrumental Intro]

[Verse]
I thought love was fireworks in the dark
A rush of words, a reckless start
I thought it lived in perfect days
No cracks, no scars, no debts to pay

[Verse]
I chased the feeling, not the truth
Held onto ghosts of wasted youth
I called it love, but deep inside
Something always felt denied

[Pre-chorus]
I walked through fire, I crossed the cold
To find the warmth I couldn’t hold

[Chorus]
We never know what love is
Until we know what it’s not
It’s not the quiet nights feeling alone
Or the tears that time forgot
It’s learning how to stay and breathe
When leaving feels like the safer thought
We never know what love is
Until we know what it’s not

[Break]

[Verse]
Love doesn’t wound to make you stay
Or turn your light into its shade
It meets you where you really are
And sees the beauty in your scars

[Pre-chorus]
I walked through fire, through the cold
To find the warmth I couldn’t hold

[Chorus]
We never know what love is
Until we know what it’s not
It’s not the quiet nights feeling alone
Or the tears that time forgot
It’s learning how to stay and breathe
When leaving feels like the safer thought
We never know what love is
Until we know what it’s not

[Bridge]
Now I know love feels like home
Like being seen when you’re alone
It doesn’t ask you to pretend
It lets you break, and helps you mend

[Interlude]

[Chorus]
We never know what love is
Until we know what it’s not
It’s not the quiet nights feeling alone
Or the tears that time forgot
It’s learning how to stay and breathe
When leaving feels like the safer thought
We never know what love is
Until we know what it’s not

[Outro]
We never know what love is
Until we know what it’s not
